Ilia Topuria promises to land first round KO win over Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298

The undefeated Ilia Topuria is extremely confident in his abilities leading into the biggest fight of his career at UFC 298.

Although Alexander Volkanovski has never lost at 145lbs, Topuria believes he’ll be able to end the fight early with a first-round knockout. Volkanovski is coming off of a vicious knockout loss at the hands (or foot, to be exact) of the UFC’s lightweight champion: Islam Makhachev.

Volkanovski has battled the featherweight division’s best and brightest and has been tested against some of the greatest fighters to ever grace the weight class. Topuria is no stranger to top-notch competition himself though, and holds wins over the likes of fighters like Bryce Mitchell, and Josh Emmett.

Ilia Topuria Describes Victory over Alexander Volkanovski, claims his time is over

“I see myself finishing him in the first round – knockout,” Topuria told UFC Español (H/T MMA Junkie). “It’s most likely going to be a knockout unless he dives for my legs. I’m going to put his lights out.”

“I’m part of the new generation of MMA,” Topuria continued. “I bring an evolved style in all areas of the sport: on the feet, in the wrestling, in the grappling. I consider myself a far more complete and effective finisher than Volkanovski.”

“The experience is on his side, but the young blood is on my side. This is my moment. God’s timing is perfect, and He’s prepared me for this moment. There won’t be any failure.”

Ilia Topuria is indeed challenging the throne at the perfect time. With Volkanovski coming off of a devastating knockout, there’s no doubt that that has to leave somebody’s confidence a little shaken. Ilia Topuria will be coming into the fight with all of the momentum, while Alexander Volkanovski will simply be looking to get things back on track.

“I’m not going to say it’s been the toughest camp because every camp we do is always hard, but I will say it’s been the most professional camp I’ve ever done,” Topuria said. “We’ve done a deep analysis on my opponent, and we’re prepared for the fight.”

Alexander Volkanovski closing as bigger betting favorite to beat Ilia Topuria at UFC 298

Undisputed featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski continues to sit as a betting favorite to beat incoming title chaser, unbeaten foe, Ilia Topuria at UFC 298 next month – with the Australian moving as bigger betting favorite as the day’s countdown to his championship return.

Volkanovski, the current undisputed featherweight champion, makes his return to the Octagon at UFC 298 next month in Anaheim, California, returning to the 145 pound limit in a title fight defense against Georgian challenger, Topuria.

Sidelined since October of last year, Alexander Volkanovski suffered a thunderous opening round high-kick and strikes KO loss to Islam Makhachev in the pair’s championship rematch at UFC 294 on short-notice.

As for Topuria, the surging undefeated contender earned his premier title tilt since moving to the UFC back in August in a main event bout with former interim title challenger, Josh Emmett, landing a one-sided unanimous decision win over the Phoenix knockout artist.

And despite his massive knockout loss to two-time opponent, Makhachev at UFC 294 just months ago – in tandem with a quickfire turnaround in Anaheim, Volkanovski continues to drift as a decent betting favorite at -142 to beat the +120 betting underdog, Topuria – in his return to the featherweight limit.

Headlining UFC 284 back in February of last year in a lightweight championship siege on home soil in Australia, Volkanovski suffered a close, unanimous decision loss to pound-for-pound number one, Makhachev in the pair’s massive title clash. The defeat came as Alexander Volkanovski’s first in the promotion.

Returning to the featherweight limit in between his high-kick knockout loss to Makhachev, Volkanovski headlined UFC 290 back in July during International Fight Week, successfully unifying the featherweight titles with a fourth round TKO win over then-interim champion, Yair Rodríguez in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Since his Octagon tenure began four years ago, Topuria has turned in six consecutive victories, landing other notable triumphs against the likes of Jai Herbert – with a massive second round KO, as well as a submission win over The Ultimate Fighter alum, Bryce Mitchell in another pay-per-view clash.

Amongst Alexander Volkanovski’s title fight defense against Topuria at UFC 298, the card also features a slew of high-profile bouts, including a massive co-main event at the bantamweight limit as former two-division champion, Henry Cejudo takes on surging contender, Merab Dvalishvili in an expected title-eliminator at the 135 pound limit.

Also worth keeping an eye on for Australian fans, former undisputed middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker makes his long-anticipated return to the Octagon for the first time since July – hoping to finally secure a long-speculated fight against former title chaser, Paulo Costa in a main card clash at UFC 298

Former interim featherweight champion, Yair Rodríguez hs sights set on a rematch with incoming title challenger, Ilia Topuria after their respective outings at UFC Mexico City and UFC 298 next month – claiming he will “catch” the Georgian if they share the Octagon together.

Rodríguez, who makes his return to the Octagon at UFC Fight Night Mexico City in late February, taking on former title challenger, Brian Ortega in a rematch of their one round clash back in 2022 at UFC Fight Night Long Island.

As for Topuria, the unbeaten Georgian contender is in the midst of a stunning winning rise through the featherweight ranks, and is slated to headline UFC 298 next month to boot, taking on soon-to-be common-foe, undisputed featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski in the pair’s grudge title fight.

And searching for a future title fight with Topuria should he emerge with a win over Volkanovski at UFC 298 next month, Chihuahua native, Rodríguez reveals he wants to fight the former in the future, taking umbrage with comments made on his July title fight performance against Volkanovski last summer.

“The one who started to provoke was Ilia (Topuria), he said that I looked like a rag [against Alexander Volkanovski],” Yair Rodríguez told ESPN Deportes. “I said let’s see who catches you and see who the rag is. Maybe it’s not time, I found the video and it’s energy seemed so similar to me, pretending to do something that wants to demonstrate a facet of security. But it doesn’t deceive me with everything it says.”

First taking on the above-mentioned Californian, Ortega back in the summer of 2022, Rodríguez landed a first round TKO win over the former, who suffered a shoulder injury during an early grappling exchange with Rodríguez.

Ilia Topuria vows to fight Conor McGregor after UFC 298 title clash

Incoming featherweight championship challenger, Ilia Topuria has laid out plans for his immediate fighting future ahead of his title siege at UFC 298 next month – which includes a fight of some form against former two-weight gold holder, Conor McGregor.

Topuria, the current number fifth ranked featherweight contender, is slated to headline UFC 298 next month in Anaheim, California, competing for divisional spoils for the first time in his Octagon tenure – in the form of a showdown against champion, Alexander Volkanovski.

In the midst of an impressive six-fight undefeated run since landing in the Dana White-led organization back in 2020, Topuria, who most recently improved to 14-0 with a shutout decision win over recent big knockout win, Josh Emmett, has sights firmly planted on super fights from here on out.

Ilia Topuria vows to fight Conor McGregor after UFC 298

And flapping gums with incumbent bantamweight champion and rival, Sean O’Malley this week, the Georgian contender has claimed should he topple the dominant featherweight force that is Volkanovski, he will chase a fight with Dublin striker, McGregor.

“I offered to fight you (Sean O’Malley) but the UFC told me that you are only good for fighting in teenager’s place, because that’s your only fan base,” Ilia Topuria posted on his official X account. “Our fight will never happen. After fighting Volk (Alexander Volkanovski) I will fight Conor (McGregor), and you will come as a fan boy. After seeing your PPV numbers the only thing I can offer you is that you fight in the preliminaries of my card.”

Himself targeting his own respective return to the Octagon, McGregor has earmarked a landing at a UFC 302 pay-per-view event on June 29. during International Fight Week, in the form of a long-awaited fight with The Ultimate Fighter 31 rival, Michael Chandler – in a middleweight division bow for both.

Ilia Topuria and Conor McGregor

Undefeated UFC featherweight contender Ilia Topuria has officially entered the Conor McGregor sweepstakes.

McGregor has been absent from the Octagon after suffering a devastating loss to Dustin Poirier in July 2021. Since then, fans have been chomping at the bit to find out when the former two-division titleholder would make his long-awaited return. McGregor recently teased a big announcement for New Year’s Day, with many suspecting, or at the very least hoping, that it will pertain to his quote-unquote “greatest comeback in combat sports history.”

McGregor is still expected to fight former Bellator MMA champion ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler in 2024, but with no official announcements thus far, it’s always possible that the UFC could pivot to a completely different fight for the Irishman. Of the names on that short list, Ilia Topuria is likely not one of them, but that didn’t stop the Spanish standout from shooting his shot on social media.

“Topuria vs McGregor #ufcspain,” Topuria wrote on X.

Will Ilia Topuria Dethrone ‘The Great’ in 2024?

Currently, Ilia Topuria is gearing up for his first shot at a world title as he is set to square off with reigning featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. The two 145’ers will headline UFC 298 on February 17 as the promotion returns to Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.

With 14 straight victories, six of those coming under the UFC banner, ‘El Matador’ established himself as the next man in line with an impressive unanimous decision victory over former interim title challenger Josh Emmett in June.

If Topuria manages to knock off Volkanovski in impressive fashion, his chances of bagging a fight with McGregor could vastly improve. But it would be foolish of Topuria to look past one of the pound-for-pound greatest fighters in UFC history.

Ilia Topuria is feeling pretty confident ahead of his first UFC title opportunity.

So much so that ‘El Matador’ has already added “UFC World Champion” to his social media profiles roughly two months away from his featherweight title clash with the reigning and defending king of the division, Alexander Volkanovski, at UFC 298 in Anaheim.

Topuria rides into his first championship opportunity with an undefeated 14-0 record, six of those wins coming under the UFC banner. ‘El Matador’ established his spot with a big unanimous decision victory over former interim title challenger Josh Emmett at UFC on ABC 5 in June.

Alexander Volkanovski isn’t buying Ilia Topuria as the guy to end his featherweight reign

Meanwhile, Alexander Volkanovski will be looking to bounce back after suffering a first-round knockout against current lightweight champ Islam Makhachev. ‘The Great’ stepped into the UFC 294 title tilt on 11 days’ notice and ultimately paid the price.

Though it was his second straight loss while challenging for the 155-pound crown, Volkanovski has looked practically unbeatable at featherweight and there’s nothing on Ilia Topuria’s resume to make him think that his reign at 145 will end in 2024.

“He needs to do something in February to show elite level because right now, I haven’t seen it,” Volkanovski told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “That doesn’t mean he’s not elite… But, there’s gonna be levels where you need to be more than just fundamentally sound. Like, if he thinks he’s gonna be able to outwrestle me, with what I’ve seen, he needs to show more than what he’s done, a lot more. Submission-wise, a lot more.

“I haven’t seen him do anything more special than any other of the guys that I’ve faced,” Volkanovski continued. “That doesn’t mean he’s not that good, but he needs to show me that. With the striking, again, durable, powerful dude, very fundamentally sound… But again, it’s so much more than that. I’ll leave it at that” (h/t MMA News).
