Max Holloway warns Ilia Topuria after UFC Singapore it's only a matter of time fight

Former undisputed featherweight champion, Max Holloway has hit out at Ilia Topuria following his stunning victory at UFC Singapore over the weekend, after the surging Georgian contender urged the Hawaiian favorite to consider hanging up his gloves.

Headlining the Kallang, Singapore event, former undisputed featherweight champion, Holloway, recorded his second consecutive victory to remain the division’s number one contender, stopping former two-time title challenger, ‘The Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung with a thunderous third round walk-off KO.

Heralding Jung’s career following the win, Holloway watched on as the South Korean star announced his decision to hang up his gloves from mixed martial arts competition with immediate effect, drawing the curtain on a memorable career in combat sports.

Ilia Topuria urges Max Holloway to retire from combat sports

Reacting to Jung’s decision to retire from the sport, the aforenoted, Topuria – who has been tipped to challenge undisputed champion, Alexander Volkanovski next, claimed that former champion, Holloway should also consider retiring from mixed martial arts.

“I respect these two @BlessedMMA (Max Holloway) and @KoreanZombieMMA, it’s time for them to retire,” Ilia Topuria posted on his X account. “@SugaSeanMMA (Sean O’Malley), keep rising up, and maybe one day we’ll share the Octagon and you @alexvolkanovski, get ready to tap out! The masterclass is coming for you. Enjoy the weekend, everyone!”

Sharing his thoughts on Topuria’s call for his retirement, Holloway issued somewhat of a warning to the number five ranked division challenger.

“Thanks for the respect, but it’s only a matter of time lol,” Max Holloway posted on his official X account.

Himself calling for a stunning fourth title fight with Volkanovski after his KO win over Jung in a return to Asia, Holloway claimed he was now once more “undeniable” to the Australian, despite dropping three consecutive defeats to him throughout their trilogy

Topuria has been riding a massive wave of momentum following his impressive unanimous decision victory over Josh Emmett last month. El Matador’ moved to 6-0 inside the Octagon, 14-0 overall. With the win, Topuria is considered by many to be the next man in line to challenge reigning UFC featherweight world champion, Alexander Volkanovski.

Following Volkanovski’s dominant third-round TKO against interim titleholder Yair Rodriguez at UFC 290, Ilia Topuria engaged in an intense face-off with the ‘The Great’ as the promotion’s latest pay-per-view offering went off the air.

In a brief interview with InsideFighting, Ilia Topuria suggested that he is the greatest fighter in the featherweight division. ‘El Matador’ even went so far as to claim that he can finish Volkanovski any way he chooses, any time he chooses, inside the Octagon.

“I can finish him however I want in the first round. If I want to submit him, I’m going to submit him. If I want to knock him out, I’m going to knock him out,” Topuria said. “I’m the greatest featherweight of all time in front of you right now.”

Ilia Topuria also suggested that his highly anticipated scrap with Alexander Volkanovski could go down this December. No official announcements have been made, but ‘The Great’ has also been linked to a potential lightweight title rematch with Islam Makhachev in October when the promotion returns to Abu Dhabi.

Entering the promotion in 2020, Topuria has curated an impressive resume for himself, scoring wins against Youssef Zalal, Damon Jackson, Ryan Hall, Jai Herbert, Bryce Mitchell, and the aforementioned Josh Emmett.

With Volkanovski’s impressive victory against Yair Rodriguez on Saturday night, ‘The Great’ has returned to the top of the pound-for-pound rankings, sharing the top spot with two-division titleholder Jon ‘Bones’ Jones.

Topuria, the current number nine ranked featherweight contender, is likely set to topple former interim title challenger, Emmett from the number five rank in the division next week – off the back of his spectacular unanimous decision (50-44, 50-42, 49-45) triumph against the Arizonian. The bout also earned both men a Fight of the Night bonus to boot.

Turning in consecutive Octagon victory number six, Topuria has previously defeated Youseff Zalal, Damon Jackson, Ryan Hall, Jai Herbert, and Bryce Mitchell.

And immediately noting his intentions to secure a featherweight title fight next – ideally in an undisputed tilt against the above-mentioned, Volkanovski, Topuria has also entertained a potential title-eliminator against former division champion, Max Holloway – if the promotion offer him a headlining bout in Spain.

Ilia Topuria already has his sights set on a high-stakes scrap with former featherweight world champion Max Holloway following his impressive unanimous decision win over Josh Emmett.

Topuria stepped into the spotlight for his first main event matchup on Saturday inside Jacksonville’s VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena. Squaring off with one-time interim title challenger Josh Emmett, Ilia Topuria delivered another dominant performance over the 25-minute affair, earning his 14th-straight win in the process. Likely sitting in the featherweight division’s top five come Monday morning, ‘El Matador’ plans on his next matchup being for the 145-pound crown. But there is one bout he’s willing to take before the inevitable title opportunity.

Appearing on the UFC Jacksonville post-fight show, Ilia Topuria suggested that he would put his title aspirations on hold for a clash with perennial contender Max Holloway, but only if it takes place in Spain.

Ilia Topuria Content to Sit and Wait for UFC Title Shot If Max Holloway Isn’t an Option

Max Holloway is one of the most accomplished featherweights in the history of the division but currently finds himself in a precarious position, having lost three-straight fights to the reigning 145-pound king, Alexander Volkanovski. With a fourth title fight unlikely, ‘Blessed’ could either settle into his position as the division’s gatekeeper or move on to 155, where a bevy of fresh matchups awaits.

Hollway recently revealed that a featherweight scrap with The Korean Zombie could be on the cards considering the two men have never met inside the Octagon. If things don’t pan out for that fan-friendly firefight, Ilia Topuria vs. Max Holloway could be the fight to make while Volkanovski settles things with Yair Rodriguez next month.

Alexander Volkanovski is scheduled to unify his featherweight world title with the division’s interim championship, currently held by Rodriguez at UFC 290 on July 8. The winner of that fight will likely find themselves matched up with Ilia Topuria in the future.

Do you want to see Ilia Topuria vs. Max Holloway, or should ‘El Matador’ sit back and wait for a title fight with the winner of Volkanovski/Rodriguez?
