UFC 186 Loses TJ Dillashaw, And Therefore All Fan Interest, to Rib Injury

(WHAT ARE YOU SMILING AT, TJ? CAN’T YOU SEE THAT *WE’RE* THE ONES IN REAL PAIN?!! via Getty.)

Perhaps the most shocking thing about UFC 185 was not the pair of title fight upsets that occurred that night, but that all of the fighters competing in said title fights even managed to make it to fight night at all. There aren’t many injury-free fighters like Jeremy Horn these days, to the point that the UFC is forced to abandon plans for a card containing just one title fight more often than not, or just cancel the card altogether. With UFC 186, they were attempting to do the impossible again, booking both the TJ DillashawRenan Barao bantamweight title fight rematch and a flyweight bout between champion Demetrious Johnson and Kyro…Kyjo…some other guy.

What I’m saying is, we probably shouldn’t be that surprised to learn that one of those 2 title fights (the one we were interested in, more specifically) will no longer be happening.

Details after the jump.

Winning a UFC title nowadays is akin to moving into the Amityville house, or feeding your Mogwai after midnight and not expecting some serious shenanigans to transpire. As such, newly-crowned bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw — who has pulled out of exactly zero fights in his UFC career due to injury — has been forced out of UFC 186 with a fractured rib. (via the UFC’s official report):

UFC President Dana White said Tuesday that TJ Dillashaw has sustained a rib fracture that will force a postponement of his much-anticipated UFC 186 bantamweight rematch against Renan Barao in Montreal on April 25.

White revealed the news during an interview with Los Angeles radio personality Kurt “Big Boy” Alexander on KRRL-FM 92.3.

Dillashaw’s injury occurred during training on Monday, White said. There is no immediate timetable for his return.

Fantastic.

This of course bumps the flyweight title match between Johnson and the other guy into the main event slot, which has been taken with the kind of grace you’d expect from MMA fans with Twitter accounts:

Great stuff, you guys. I guess the UFC can sleep easy knowing that most of these people weren’t planning on actually paying for UFC 186 in the first place. Go team!

Chris Weidman Injured Again, Rousey vs. Zingano Now Headlines UFC 184

(“Okay, Al, you need to get back on your feet and…dammit, there goes the other knee.” Via Getty.)

I know what you’re thinking, “A champion who can’t stay healthy? WHAT SPORT IS THIS?”

Well, it’s MMA, dum-dum. Nothing ever goes according to plan; just ask Alexander Gustafsson. Or middleweight champ Chris Weidman, for that matter, who has once again been forced out of his bout with Vitor Belfort due to injury. We now kick it to our man in the field, Bunk Moreland, for analysis…

According to multiple sources, Weidman has gone down with a rib cartilage injury. As of this write-up, there is no expected timetable for his return.

Something about how Weidman and Belfort were originally scheduled to fight at UFC 173 until Vitor pulled out in the wake of the TRT ban. Something else about how they were rescheduled for UFC 181 until Weidman broke his hand.

Regardless, the women’s bantamweight title fight between Ronda Rousey and Cat Zingano originally scheduled for UFC 181 has now been bumped back to serve as the headliner for UFC 184. But rest assured, a card co-mained by Jake Ellenberger vs. Josh Koscheck will now cost us 5 more dollars than it did last year.

Something about Ronda Rousey’s recent fights.

Something about Cat Zingano’s recent fights.

Anything else to add, Bunk?

Yeah, that about sums it up. This sport is killing us. Goodnight.

Oh Great, Now Raphael Assuncao Is Injured Too

(This is how you repay a man for doing a great deed, God? WELL TO HELL WITH YOU! Photo via Getty)

The hits just keep on coming in the bantamweight division, ladies and gentlemen. I don’t mean literal hits, of course, because that would imply that any of the fighters in said division are healthy enough to throw a punch or two every now and again.

Let’s just get this over with: Mere hours after word broke that Dominick Cruz had injured his *other* ACL and would be out of action indefinitely, Raphael Assuncao (a.k.a the guy who would be next in line for a title shot should Cruz get injured) announced via Twitter that he had suffered an injury in training and would also be out indefinitely.

And just like that, the last fuck given about the bantamweight division floated away with the passing breeze.

And just like that, the last fuck given about the bantamweight division floated away with the passing breeze.

If you recall, this is the second ill-timed injury that has screwed Assuncao out of a title shot. Back in February, Assuncao was briefly linked to a title shot against then champion Renan Barao at UFC 173, but declined the fight due to a rib injury suffered in his fight against Pedro Munhoz at UFC 170. Some guy named T.J. offered to step in on late notice for Assuncao, and yadda yadda yadda there’s a new champion now.

With Assuncao injured, the only question remaining in my mind is: How long must we wait to bestow pound-for-pound king status on TJ Dillashaw? I mean, the man is such a force at 135 that contenders are intentionally injuring themselves to avoid fighting him. If that doesn’t scream G.O.A.T., then I’m just filling up space at the end of this article. And I would never.

Do.

That.

Anthony Pettis May Miss 6 Months with Hand Injury, Pettis Says ‘My Hand Is Fine’

Anthony Pettis still can’t seem to shake the only opponent separating him from superstardom: his own body.
