It turns out a positive COVID-19 test was the reason why the Irene Aldana vs. Holly Holm fight was postponed.

It was reported on Wednesday that the women’s bantamweight bout set to headline the UFC’s upcoming August 1 show was postponed for undisclosed reasons. The middleweight bout between Derek Brunson and Edmen Shahbahzyan would instead headline the card.

Now we know why.

Aldana Exhibited COVID-19 Symptoms

Aldana revealed on social media she had tested positive for COVID-19 despite having a training camp in total isolation.

She is now recovering and feels much better as she looks forward to fighting Holm on a new date.

“I deeply thank the fans and all the media for their messages of support and the interest shown in the news of the postponement of my fight in 1st, August vs. Holly Holm,” Aldana wrote in a statement. “We are going through a very complicated world situation and my country is no exception: COVID-19.

“Despite the fact that we have made a camp in total isolation and with the health measures recommended by the authorities, unfortunately I had some symptoms and in the pertinent examinations it was positive. I am still recovering: the first days were complicated in terms of symptoms, but I am much better.

“… I deeply thank the UFC, its president Dana White, Mick Maynard and my opponent and her team for the understanding shown, we will be ready for the new date that the company assigns us within the next few months.”

Aldana is on a two-fight winning streak and has also won five of her last six outings. Holm, meanwhile, returned to the win column against Raquel Pennington after getting knocked out by Amanda Nunes in their title fight last summer.

The UFC card on August 1 at the Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada has a new main event. Former bantamweight champion Holly Holm was expected to headline the event against surging contender Irene Alanda but that fight will now take place at a later date according to UFC boss Dana White.

Holm got back into the win column last time out dominating Raquel Pennington over three rounds. Prior to that, she came up short against the GOAT of women’s MMA, Amanda Nunes.

Aldana has picked up back-to-back wins in her past two UFC fights. The 32-year-old Mexican beat Vanessa Melo over three rounds before putting on a career best performance to knock out the previously unbeaten Ketlen Vieira.

The UFC president made the announcement during an Instagram live chat with retired bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey. He revealed Holm vs. Alanda was off but gave no specific reason as to why. White went on to announce perennial middleweight contender Derek Brunson would now headline the event alongside Edmen Shahbazyan who is managed by Rousey.

Mike Heck of MMA Fighting was on the Instagram live during White’s announcement and reported the news on social media, he wrote.

“Dana White just revealed that Holly Holm vs. Irene Aldana will be pushed to a later date, and that Derek Brunson vs. Edmen Shahbazyan is the new main event for Aug. 1 in Las Vegas.”

The official UFC Twitter account quickly followed on the announcement with a post to confirm the new main event for August 1 and provide a fight poster to get the fans excited about the middleweight match-up.

Brunson has picked up consecutive wins over Elias Theodorou and Ian Heinisch to re-establish himself as one to watch in the division. The American previously suffered back-to-back losses against Israel Adesanya and ‘Jacare’ Souza.

Shahbazyan is the rising star at 185lbs who currently boasts a perfect 11-0 record. At just 22 years old he already has four UFC wins to his name, three of which have come by stoppage inside one round.

Holly Holm: There’s A Reason I Get Regular Title Shots

Holly Holm still plans on becoming a UFC champion again.

Holm meets Irene Aldana in a pivotal bantamweight encounter that will headline the UFC’s upcoming August 1 show. The former champion is coming off a unanimous decision win over Raquel Pennington in January as she bounced back from her first-round TKO defeat to Amanda Nunes in their bantamweight title fight.

With many seeing Aldana as next in line for a 135-pound title shot, a potential win for Holm over the Mexican could see her enter title contention yet again, especially if Nunes were to retire. It that happened, it would be her fourth title shot across two divisions since losing her title to Miesha Tate in 2016.

And although she has received plenty of criticism for her previous title shots, Holm, 38, believes there’s a simple reason why she keeps getting them.

“I’ve fallen short of getting that title back more than once, and it’s frustrating, but I know I keep fighting the very top-ranked girls, so I’m constantly right there,” Holm told MMA Junkie. “I’m still aching for it. I still want it. That’s a lot to say. Some people say, ‘Oh, I want the belt’ then they don’t really think about it. I know exactly how much work that takes to get there, and I know it took a big commitment.

“You’ve got to win fights along the way and when it comes, I can’t let the opportunity slip through my fingers again. Obviously it’s right there. I know people say, ‘Oh, she’s had plenty of title fights.’ There’s a reason: Because I keep fighting the best, and I keep staying right there. A lot of times I’m just one fight away. No matter what, I have Irene Aldana in front of me.”

Holm Prepared For Aldana

Holm won’t face an easy task either.

Aldana is a highly-skilled striker who has won five of her last six and is coming off an impressive knockout victory over the previously undefeated Ketlen Vieira. While she acknowledges the threats of Aldana, Holm plans on getting the win simply by being superior in every department.

“My goal is just to be clearer, stronger, sharper, and more well rounded,” Holm added. “I want to do all of that. I know she’s coming. She’s got a lot of movement; she’s got long punches and long arms. She’s one of the taller bantamweights.

“Every fighter brings their own strengths, and my job is just to be better at any of those things, and that’s what I’m trying to do.”

Do you think Holm will end up getting another title shot?

Former women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm will return to action to headline on August 1 against surging contender Irene Alanda. Brett Okamoto of ESPN broke the fight news on social media last night, he wrote.

“Breaking: Holly Holm (@HollyHolm) vs. Irene Aldana (@IreneAldana_) to headline UFC Fight Night event on 8/1 in Las Vegas, per sources. Holm coming off Pennington win in January. Aldana has won five of her last six.”

Holm Hoping For Another Shot

Holm will be hoping to earn another shot at the title she once held by beating one of the top contenders at 135lbs. ‘The Preachers Daughter’ returned to winning ways last time out, picking up a decision win over former title challenger Raquel Pennington at UFC 246 in January. Prior to that Holm suffered a first-round knockout loss to dual weight UFC champion Amanda Nunes at UFC 239 in July 2019.

Aldana has slowly been gathering hype, winning five of her past six fights. Her lone loss coming against Pennington in a split decision three fights ago. The Mexican scored a huge KO win over the previously undefeated Ketlen Vieira last time out and will be looking to build on that momentum by claiming the biggest win of her career on August 1.

On the same card top middleweight contenders, Derek Brunson and Edmen Shahbazyan are also expected to clash. Okamoto of ESPN also broke that news on his social media he wrote.

“Breaking: Derek Brunson (@DerekBrunson) vs. Edmen Shahbazyan (@edmenshahbazyan) booked (again) for UFC Fight Night on 8/1, per sources. Third time is a charm. Was booked 3/7 and 4/11 previously.”

As stated this is the third time these two fighters have been scheduled to meet. Long-time contender Bruson heads into the bout off the back of two decision wins over Ian Heinisch and Elias Theodorou. Shahbazyan is just 22 years old and keen to add the biggest name yet to his currently perfect 11-0 record.
