Dustin Poirier claims he accepted to fight Islam Makhachev at UFC 294 before promotion stopped responding to him

Former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier has confirmed he accepted an offer to fight undisputed division titleholder, Islam Makhachev at UFC 294 last month – before the promotion eventually stopped responding to his messages, and then booked featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski into the bout.

Poirier, a former interim lightweight champion and the current number three ranked divisional contender, has been sidelined since he headlined UFC 291 back in July of last year, suffering a massive second round high-kick knockout loss to fellow former interim champion, Justin Gaethje in the pair’s symbolic BMF championship rematch.

Prior to that, Poirier, who won interim lightweight gold in a 2019 rematch with former featherweight gold holder, Max Holloway, submitted Michael Chandler with a third round rear-naked choke in November of last year in Madison Square Garden.

And appearing to offer his services at a UFC 300 card next year, Lafayette native, Poirier has revealed the details surrounding a potential short-notice title fight with Makhachev last month, claiming he agreed to fight the Russian, before promotional Chief Business Officer, Hunter Campbell stopped responding to his messages.

“That’s exactly accurate,” Dustin Poirier told MMA Fighting during a recent interview. “I think it was 12 days, 11 days before the event. The thing is, dude, I just landed, I have a condo in South Florida, and the day they [the UFC] called me, I had just landed maybe two-and-a-half hours in Florida before the call to check on my condo. I stayed there for maybe five days to get some training in with the team there because I haven’t seen them in a while.”

“… My phone rings, I see it’s Hunter (Campbell), and I’m all jacked up on Celsius,” Dustin Poirier explained. “I answer the phone, let’s go. I said, ‘What perfect timing, this is how life works.’ I just landed in Florida, my whole team is here, my coaches are in town, this happened for a reason. He asked me my weight, and I [told him] I can make the weight in 11 days, no problem. I thought that was it. He told me give him one day.”

“The next day, I didn’t hear back,” Dustin Poirier explained. “I’m like, ‘Hey, bro, I said yes, let’s go I got my team here, let’s book these flights, I need to get out there ASAP.’ Then he kept quiet for a while, and then all the news started breaking. But he didn’t tell me, ‘Hey, you’re the guy.’ He asked me if I would do it, I said yes, he told me to give him one day, and I guess he was waiting on Alexander (Volkanovski) to commit.”

Conor McGregor blasts UFC pound for pound rankings amid Islam Makhachev rise he was caught on steroids

Former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion, Conor McGregor has hit out at the UFC and incumbent 155 pound champion, Islam Makhachev, questioning how the Russian has topped the pound-for-pound rankings this week, pointing to a prior failed drug test for the banned substance, meldonium following a 2015 knockout loss to Brazilian veteran, Adriano Martins.

McGregor, a former two-weight champion under the banner of the Dana White-led promotional banner, has been sidelined from the Octagon since he headlined UFC 264 back in 2021, suffering a fractured left tibia and fibula in a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss to former interim champion, Dustin Poirier.

As for Makhachev, the American Kickboxing Academy staple headlined UFC 294 back in October in Abu Dhabi, UAE, landing a spectacular first round high-kick knockout win over Alexander Volkanovski in the pair’s short-notice championship fight rematch in the Middle East.

And despite initial complaints, Makhachev has topped the official pound-for-pound rankings this week following the withdrawal of incumbent heavyweight champion, Jon Jones from UFC 295 this weekend in Madison Square Garden.

Conor McGregor hits out at Islam Makhachev once more

Reacting to news of Makhachev’s rise to the top of the pound-for-pound list, McGregor has pointed at a prior banned substance discretion from the Russian following his 192 loss to Martins, after he tested positive for meldonium, mocking the sport of mixed martial arts to boot.

“KO’d unconscious and caught on steroids,” Conor McGregor posted on his official X account, accompanied by a picture of Islam Makhachev after his knockout loss to Adriano Martins. “MMA’s current P4P No. 1. What a sport.”

Following his flagging by anti-doping agency, USADA, Makhachev was eventually judged to have ingested the banned substance “without fault or negligence” – and furthermore, avoided a retroactive suspension from active competition.

Continually linked with a future fight with McGregor, Makhachev’s head coach, Javier Mendez claimed that he would welcome a future fight with the ex-two-weight champion for his student.

Islam Makhachev lands at number one in UFC pound for pound rankings amid injury to Jon Jones

Undisputed lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev can finally call himself the number one pound-for-pound fighter on the UFC’s books today, after a latest rankings update after UFC Sao Paulo has saw the Russin leapfrog heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, who is out of action due to injury, atop the summit.

Makhachev, the current undisputed lightweight champion, most recently headlined UFC 294 back in October in Abu Dhabi, UAE, landing a first round high-kick knockout win over featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski in the pair’s short-notice rematch.

Initially scheduled to headline the flagship return to the Middle East in another rematch against former lightweight titleholder, Charles Oliveira, Makhachev saw the pairing axed after the Brazilian suffered a nasty laceration above his right eye – forcing him from the championship bout.

And in the immediate aftermath of his one-sided victory over New South Wales native, Volkanovski, Makhachev questioned why he had yet to crack the top of the pound-for-pound rankings list, claiming that there was nothing more for him to do in order to earn that top billing.

Islam Makhachev tops the UFC’s pound-for-pound rankings

However, following last weekend’s UFC Sao Paulo card in Brazil, the promotion have this morning released a new rankings update ahead of UFC 295 on Saturday – with Islam Makhachev knocking the above-mentioned, Jones from top spot, and landing atop the list for the first time in his Octagon tenure.

For Jones, the undisputed heavyweight champion was slated to headline UFC 295 this weekend at Madison Square Garden, however, a pectoral tendon tear and subsequent surgical procedure have ruled the Endicott native from a fight with former two-time champion, Stipe Miocic

Yet to book his return to the Octagon, Makhachev is expected to fight Sao Paulo finisher, Oliveira in a reworked matchup next, with his manager, Ali Abdelaziz confirming his client would not be available to compete until March of next year at the earliest

Islam Makhachev eyes future fight with UFC star Conor McGregor he gets to do what Khabib did

American Kickboxing Academy head coach, Javier Mendez has revealed that a potential future fight between his student, undisputed lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, and UFC star, Conor McGregor – is most definitely something he would back, with the view of landing the Russian champion a hefty payday.

Makhachev, the current undisputed lightweight champion, most recently headlined UFC 294 back in October in Abu Dhabi, UAE, landing a stunning opening round win over featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski in the pair’s rematch – launching a massive high-kick and follow-up strikes knockout win in the Middle East.

As for McGregor, the former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion has been sidelined from the Octagon since he fractured his left tibia and fibula in a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO defeat to former interim champion, Dustin Poirier.

Islam Makhachev backed to fight Conor McGregor in the future?

And despite links with Islam Makhachev to a championship rematch against former titleholder, Charles Oliveira as soon as January of this year at UFC 297 in Toronto, Canada, the Russian’s head coach, Mendez claimed that a potential showdown with sport star, McGregor would be an interesting fight for his student.

“I see that [Conor McGregor fight] as a fight that would be interesting for Islam (Makhachev),” Mendez told Red Corner MMA. “Because he gets to do what Khabib (Nurmagomedov) did and finish [the rivalry], I guess you could say. He gets to come back and get on the same journey that Khabib did. It’s a great payday for Islam. I think it’s great if Islam wants it.”

“If he doesn’t, then maybe going for the welterweight title is more appealing for him to create the legacy that he wants,” Mendez explained. “Because beating Conor is not gonna create the legacy that Islam wants, right? Going after the welterweight title is. That’s a legacy-type moment. With Conor, it’s a money and it’s a hype thing.” (H/T MMA News)

Charles Oliveira plans January return to the UFC despite cancelled title rematch with Islam Makhachev

Former undisputed ligthweight champion, Charles Oliveira has revealed he still plans to make a return to the Octagon in January of next year – despite Dana White recently axing reported plans for him to take on Islam Makhachev at UFC 297 that month in Toronto, Canada.

Oliveira, the current number one ranked lightweight contender and former undisputed division champion, withdrew from a scheduled rematch with the above-mentioned, Makhachev atop a UFC 294 pay-per-view card last month in Abu Dhabi, UAE, after suffering a nasty laceration during his final sparring session ahead of the bout.

Sidelined since June of this year, Oliveira, the most prolific finisher in the history of the promotion and also the most prolific all-time submission threat, turned in a stunning first round ground strikes TKO win over perennial contender, Beneil Dariush in the pair’s championship eliminator in ‘The Great White North’.

And over the course of the weekend, reports from Ariel Helwani revealed how currently the plan was to host a lightweight title rematch between Makhachev and Oliveira at UFC 297 on January 20. next in Canada.

However, yesterday evening, UFC CEO, White rubbished that report, claiming that the bout would not be taking place at UFC 297 in January of next year, claiming it would only happen when both teams were ready.

Furthermore, Makhachev’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz claimed that his client would be ready to compete again as soon as March 9. instead.

Charles Oliveira addresses a potential January return

Appearing in his native Sao Paulo over the course of the weekend to attend and corner at a UFC Fight Night billed card, Oliveira revealed he currently had no fight booked as he continues to recover from his laceration, however, confirmed plans to fight in January.

“It was quite a deep cut,” Charles Oliveira told ESPN. “We don’t have any scheduled fights at the moment, so we can take our time to get a good recovery. So, I might go back into [training] within a week or so.”

“We just heard this in the locker room [reports of a rematch with Islam Makhachev at UFC 297],” Charles Oliveira explained. “People were asking us in messages. This is the first time we’ve heard about it. But that’s the timeline, January maybe, so who knows?”

Robert Whittaker apologizes for underplaying Islam Makhachev’s run: ‘I’m sorry for that, but not really to you guys’

Robert Whittaker

Robert Whittaker wasn’t a fan of Alexander Volkanovski’s performance at UFC 294 but now wants to clarify some of the statements he made.

Volkanovski stepped in on less than two weeks notice to face Islam Makhachev on behalf of an injured Charles Oliveira. Despite how close the first fight was, the second fight wasn’t even close.

Things didn’t look too one-sided; until they did. Makhachev would land a picture-perfect head kick shortly into the first round, and that would spell night-night for the legendary Aussie. The kick and ensuing hammer fists by Makhachev would leave Alexander Volkanovski stranded on a different dimensional plane. A cosmic traveler in a different realm. In short, the fight was over as soon as the kick landed. It was a legendary moment for MMA fans to witness, and although it truly burned to see such a guy as Volkanovski have that happen to him: it was also a truly career-defining moment for Islam Makhachev.

Robert Whittaker was very vocal about the fight. Some fans believed he was too critical of Volkanovski, and also didn’t give Makhachev nearly enough credit for his terrific finish of a true legend like ‘Volk’.

Robert Whittaker clarifies his opinion on the Volkanovski and Makhachev fight

“I just want to address it,” Whittaker began on his podcast (H/T MMA News). “I’m sorry if I underplayed Makhachev’s achievements in beating Volk the way he did. That was not what I intended to do even if that’s how I made it sound. I’m sorry for that, but not really to you guys, to him because I don’t want him seeing it and feeling like that.”

“Well, I am a little bit to you guys,” He continued. “Now, I spoke to Johnny [his co-host] after the episode and was like ‘Hey Johnny, was I too harsh on Volk?’ because I thought I was a bit harsh on Volk, to be honest.”

“But, you guys just made me well aware that I was not too harsh on Volk, that I was going down with him on my shield as well,” Robert Whittaker clarified.

“I do not take anything away from the way Makhachev did to take on the newcomer,” Whittaker maintained. “To take on a guy that gave him such a hard time in his first fight, to have such performance, to adapt to the changing opponents. To do what he did that night, unbelievable.”
