Former two-weight UFC champion, Conor McGregor has offered current featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski some rather questionable advice ahead of the Australian’s lightweight title siege against Islam Makhachev at UFC 284 – urging the challenger to “headbutt” the lightweight kingpin.

McGregor, himself, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion, has been sidelined since July 2021, suffering a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss against Dustin Poirier after he fractured his left tibia and fibula.

Earlier this month, the Dubliner was confirmed as an opposing coach on The Ultimate Fighter 31 – coaching against Michael Chandler before the duo face-off later this year – potentially in September in the Octagon at the welterweight limit of 170lbs.

Conor McGregor plays the advisor role for Alexander Volkanovski

And ahead of tonight’s massive lightweight title fight between Makhachev and Volkanovski, fans have recounted recent advice given to Volkanovski by McGregor following the former’s title victory against Charles Oliveira back in October of last year, in which the ex-champion urged Volkanovski to “headbutt” Makhachev.

Aim to headbutt the chest cavity,” Conor McGregor tweeted at Alexander Volkanovski in a bid to advise him ahead of his fight with Islam Makhachev at UFC 284.

Making his first leap to the lightweight limit of 155lbs during his Octagon tenure for tonight’s fight with Makhachev, McGregor also urged Volkanovski to approach the fight as a “bowling ball” for the best chance of success.

And we dance on,” Conor McGregor tweeted. “Good. I was in your exact spot one time don’t forget. 145 coming up. Good luck. I’d say go heavier. Rugby days. Be a bowling ball. That’s how I’d do it as you. Your condition right now as I see it, I don’t know. But bowling ball style for your best chance.

For Makhachev, tonight’s outing with Volkanovski offers him the opportunity to clinch the pound-for-pound number one summit in the UFC, as well as secure his first defense of the lightweight title since submitting Oliveir last October.

Ahead of his undisputed lightweight title fight at UFC 284 tonight in Perth, Australia – undisputed featherweight best, Alexander Volkanovski has claimed he plans to defend both championships in 2023, should he topple the streaking, Islam Makhachev at the RAC Arena.

Volkanovski, the current undisputed featherweight champion of the UFC, and the promotion’s current pound-for-pound number one fighter, will make his lightweight division debut tonight against champion, Makhachev, attempting to become a two-weight champion held simultaneously.

New South Wales native, Volkanovski most recently co-headlined UFC 276 back in July of last year during International Fight Week, defeating three-time foe, Max Holloway for the third time during their respective mixed martial arts careers.

Alexander Volkanovski plans to defend both titles with a UFC 284 win

Plotting a return to featherweight and a subsequent leap back to lightweight with a title victory over Makhachev tonight ‘Down Under’, Volkanovski claimed he would be active throughout 2023 most definitely. And insisted he would look to defend both crowns throughout the annum.

I made a promise that I’ll keep both divisions busy and I’m a man of my word…” Alexander Volkanovski told TMZ Sports ahead of UFC 284. “I want to be active. I want 2023 to be active and this is the year that will define my legacy. This is the one that everyone’s gonna be talking about. This is what I really want so I need to be active. So I want to do both divisions. I really do. I said I was gonna do it and I’m gonna try my best to actually do that.

Tasked with preventing a 12-fight winning route for Makhachev in tonight’s championship clash, Volkanovski admits he needs to be on top form to hand the Russian sambo specialist a loss on home soil.

If I have the wrong strategy – if I do things wrong, he [Islam Makahchev] could win,” Alexander Volkanovski. “He could get a decision. He could submit you. So you need to fight a great, great fight and you need to capitalize on the feet. You’re gonna see me really, really wanna capitalize on the feet.” (Transcribed by Sportsnaut

Undefeated in his 12 fight tenure under the banner of the UFC, Volkanovski has handed losses to the likes of Chad Mendes, Jose Aldo, Brian Ortega, Chan Sung Jung, and the aforenoted, Max Holloway.

Islam Makhachev became the UFC lightweight champion in October 2022 by defeating Charles Oliveira. His second-round submission win was commanding, and many rightly predicted that he would keep the belt for quite some time.

Makhachev beat P4P No. 1 Alexander Volkanovski via decision in his first title defense and knocked him out with a head kick in the rematch. He then submitted Dustin Poirier in the fifth but also proved that his striking prowess is second to none in the lightweight division.

Arman Tsarukyan, who Makhachev beat via unanimous decision in 2019, is likely to be the next title challenger. According to Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen, the lightweight kingpin needs to turn ‘heel’ to make the most of his outstanding run in the UFC…

Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen Explain How Islam Makhachev Can Become UFC’s Biggest Star By Pursuing Floyd Mayweather’s Approach

In a recent episode of Good Guy / Bad Guy on the ESPN MMA YouTube channel, Sonnen and Cormier expressed concern over the current state of UFC champions. Because most of the champions have only recently won their belts, the company doesn’t boast a lot of stars.

After calling Jon Jones and Alex Pereira the two most popular fighters on the roster, Cormier advocated that Makhachev has the potential to replace them once they’ve retired or lost. However, he would have to tone down the politeness.

Sonnen agreed with the former UFC heavyweight kingpin. According to the veterans, a heel turn would benefit Makhachev greatly as he already drops cold statements but in a rather respectful manner. For readers unaware of the term, a heel in pro wrestling is the person who plays the villain.

Here’s Sonnen appreciating Makhachev for his personality that just needs to be marketed in MMA circles the right way:

“Okay, that guy is so charismatic, and he is so secretly funny. If he was to do a heel turn, I mean, come on, he said one of the great heel lines ever. He said a whole bunch of professors should be taking their black belts back from guys. Like that angle and that is blasphemy in this sport and nobody even knows got it. It was like this G-rated line, he didn’t use profanity, he didn’t yell. When he said it, he said it nicely.”

Over the years, Sonnen himself, Michael Bisping, and Colby Covington have proved that a heel personality can sell amazingly well in the UFC as well. According to Cormier, Makhachev can boast about his superior skills and diss all the lightweights. He could follow in the footsteps of Floyd Mayweather and aim to reach a stage where people tune in to watch him lose.

“I think that’s the move for Islam. He needs to get you and I to write him promos. We should write him promos. We write promos telling how much better he is than everyone. I would make him tell everybody that they don’t deserve to be in there with him and he’s just going to lord over this division until he decides to retire.”
