Jamahal Hill teases return from injury amid links to fight with Alex Pereira I'm back UFC

Former undisputed light heavyweight champion, Jamahal Hill appears steadfast on his impending return to the Octagon – amid continued links to a title showdown with incumbent gold holder, Alex Pereira – claiming he’s “back” after suffering a ruptured achilles last summer, forcing his vacating of the UFC crown.

Hill, the current number one ranked light heavyweight contender, officially vacated his championship come the conclusion of November’s title fight headliner at UFC 295 in Madison Square Garden.

Watching from ‘fighter row’, Illinois native, Jamahal Hill was in attendance as former undisputed middleweight champion, Alex Pereira added the light heavyweight crown to his ever-growing trophy cabinet, courtesy of a second round TKO win over former divisional best, Jiri Prochazka in the pair’s showdown.

And calling for a shot at the newly-minted Sao Paulo native in the immediate aftermath of UFC 295 in New York, Hill’s calls were backed by Pereira – who appeared to shutdown the prospect of a defense against Magomed Ankalaev next, who turned in a brutal knockout win over Johnny Walker in the pair’s rematch last month.

Teasing his impending return to the Octagon – amid links to his inclusion on a massive UFC 300 card in April, and a title fight against knockout artist, Pereira, Dana White’s Contender Series alum, Hill posted “I’m baaaack” on his official social media accounts.

Drawing a distinct history with GLORY Kickboxing Hall of Fame inductee, Pereira, Hill became the first DWCS alum to win Octagon gold back in January of last year – landing a decision win over the former’s training partner and former champion, Glover Teixeira on hostile territory in Brazil.

Weighing up the future of a title fight with Pereira in the future after his ascension to the throne, Hill’s injury suffered during a pick-up basketball game during International Fight Week in July, forced a change in the light heavyweight title landscape.

Alex Pereira betting favorite to hold title at the end of next year

Undisputed light heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira remains a strong betting favorite to beat Jamahal Hill in his return to the Octagon – with the UFC kingpin claiming he wants to settle his differences with the former gold holder first and foremost.

Pereira, a former undisputed middleweight titleholder and current light heavyweight kingpin, landed the 205 pound title back in November in the main event of UFC 295, stopping former titleholder, Jiri Prochazka with a blistering second round TKO win at Madison Square Garden.

As for Illinois native, Hill, the ex-champion has been sidelined since he took the title in another vacant pairing against Pereira’s close friend and training partner, Glover Teixeira back in January of last year in Brazil – becoming the first Dana White’s Contender Series product to mint himself with gold.

And making his case for a title fight defense with long-time foe, Hill in his immediate return to the Octagon, Sao Paulo knockout artist, Pereira is currently riding a -160 betting line as a favorite to beat former gold holder, Hill, who is a current +130 betting underdog.

If punters are interested on betting on UFC events – including a long-anticipated title fight between Alex Pereira and Jamahal Hill, a host of markets and online bookmakers are offering odds on the potential pairing, and with the bout likely to take place in a Las Vegas return, why not try your luck on a real money slot whilst taking in the festivities of ‘Sin City.

With a keen eye on last weekend’s UFC Vegas 84 headliner between Magomed Ankalaev, and compatriot, Johnny Walker – the latter whom continually called for a title return against the Brazilian as soon as UFC 300, Pereira appeared to dismiss Ankalaev following his knockout win, in favor of a grudge fight against ex-champion, Hill firstly.

“Guys let’s focus on what matters which is Jamahal (Hill),” Alex Pereira posted on his official Instagram account. “And then I’ll focus on breaking another record by making two title defesnes in the shortest time possible.”

Making his light heavyweight debut back in July of last year at UFC 291, Alex Pereira landed a decision win over former champion, Jan Blachowicz, outstriking the Polish veteran with heavy shots in the second and final third round, following a grappling-heavy onslaught in the initial frame.

And ahead of his championship win over Czech Republic native, Prochazka back in November, Brazilian fan-favorite, Alex Pereira received an induction into the GLORY Kickboxing Hall of Fame – a promotion where he first minted himself as a two-division champion – a feat he later repeated in the UFC.

Vacating his undisputed light heavyweight crown back in July following the culimination of International Fight Week, Hill is said to have suffered a nasty achilles injury during a pick-up basketball match with fellow fighters and UFC veterans, electing to relinquish the belt.

And while a title fight between himself and Pereira has yet to be officially booked by the organization, Hill has been steadfast in his claim that he will compete for spoils in his immediate return to the Octagon.

Undisputed light heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira has sights fixed on a title defense against former gold holder, Jamahal Hill first and foremost in his return to the Octagon, appearing to brush aside any talk of a long-awaited bout between himself and Russian challenger, Magomed Ankalaev.

Pereira, a former undisputed middleweight titleholder, landed the vacant light heavyweight crown at UFC 295 back in November at Madison Square Garden – stopping Jiri Prochazka with a second round TKO to become a two-weight champion.

And linked with a UFC 300 return in April – particularly with an interim heavyweight title clash with current gold holder, Tom Aspinall, Pereira recently shot down any idea of a fight with the British fighter, claiming while a heavyweight move may materialize in the future, April may come too soon.

Following UFC Vegas 84 over the course of the weekend, the aforenoted, Ankalaev inserted himself firmly into the championship picture – stopping Pereira’s compatriot, Johnny Walker with a stunning second round knockout in the pair’s rematch.

And attending the UFC Apex facility event, the aforenoted, Hill – the first Dana White’s Contender Series product to strike gold, appears to be the main focus for defending champion, Pereira, who eyes a title battle in his immediate future.

“Guys let’s focus on what matters which is Jamahal (Hill),” Alex Pereira posted on his official Instagram account. “And then I’ll focus on breaking another record by making two title defesnes in the shortest time possible.”

Fighting Sao Paulo native, Pereira’s close friend and training partner, Glover Teixeira for a vacant title last January in Brazil, Hill struck gold with a unanimous decision win over the former champion, and has been linked with a title fight against Pereira in the time since.

Longtime UFC commentator Joe Rogan Analyzes Impending Title Fight between Alex Pereira and Jamahal Hill

Joe Rogan offered his take on the impending light heavyweight title tilt between newly minted world champion Alex Pereira and former titleholder Jamahal Hill.

Hill successfully claimed the title in January 2023, securing a decisive unanimous decision victory over Glover Teixeira. Unfortunately, ‘Sweet Dreams’ never got the opportunity to defend the gold. Waiting for Jiri Prochazka to return from a shoulder injury, Hill suffered a ruptured Achilles, forcing him to vacate the title.

That paved the way for Pereira to claim his second UFC belt in as many weight classes at the promotion’s 30th-anniversary showcase in Madison Square Garden last month.

Speaking about their inevitable clash with former 205-pound titleholder Daniel Cormier during an episode of his popular podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, the longtime UFC commentator suggested that Jamahal Hill would present Pereira with a very unique challenge inside the Octagon.

“I think Jamahal Hill’s a real challenge for him,” Rogan said. “Jamahal’s a sniper, man. He finds chins, he’s clever, dude. Jamahal’s got some nasty hands, man. He really does have some nasty hands.”

Joe Rogan Says Jamahal Hill Has Never Fought Someone Like Alex Pereira

However, Rogan does question Hill’s strength of schedule, noting that he has never faced an opponent on the level of Alex Pereira.

“You know, I have never seen [Hill] fight anybody of that caliber, yet, but I think he’s capable,” Rogan said. “What he did to Glover was very impressive. Just beat him up. I mean, when you think how Jiri struggled with Glover, and then Jamahal Hill just pieced him up. Oh my God, and it was clever, it was smooth” (h/t MMAKnockout.com).

With Hill still focused on recovering from his ankle injury, no official date has been announced for his clash with Pereira. ‘Sweet Dreams’ hasn’t ruled out a potential return at UFC 300, but he did suggest that summer 2024 was the likeliest scenario.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill was arrested in the early morning hours on November 27 and was charged with one count of aggravated domestic violence after he allegedly punched his brother, James Hill Jr. in the face multiple times two days prior.

According to a report from the Kent County Sheriff’s Office and TMZ, Hill and his brother were going to clean the UFC star’s house as he had been out of it for months and needed to get rid of food that had spoiled in the refrigerator. James Hill Jr. offered to clean the house for him in exchange for $300. The document states that he had supposedly cleaned the whole house except for a freezer in the garage.

There were then two arguments that allegedly broke out between the brothers, per the police report. The first fight caused James Hill to leave the scene.

Jamahal Hill then texted his brother asking why he didn’t clean out the freezer in the garage and demanded half of the money back for only doing half the job. James Hill returned to his brother’s home on November 25 to finish the task before a second argument ensued which turned physical.

According to the docs, Jamahal Hill hit his brother so hard that one of his teeth fell out, and his face and left eye appeared to be swollen.

Jamahal Hill issues Statement Following Arrest

Jamahal Hill has since responded to the accusations. Though he was not able to offer much insight into the incident, he appeared to maintain his innocence in the brief statement.

“There’s been a lot of reports out today about the situation that happened when I was back home in Michigan, visiting for the holidays,” Hill said. “I will just say this, at this time it is an open case. I’ve been advised not to speak on it, which I know not to speak on it.

“I just can’t wait for the truth to be told in court. I will wait for that day and I look forward to that day. The people who know me and know my character and truly, truly rock with me and know who I am, hold onto that and stay true to that. That’s all I’m a say on that.”

It’s nearly a year since Jamahal Hill has competed inside the Octagon following his world-title-winning performance against Glover Teixeira at UFC 283. ‘Sweet Dreams’ had been holding out for a clash with former 205-pound titleholder Jiri Prochazka, but Hill suffered a ruptured Achilles in July, forcing him to relinquish the light heavyweight title.

No timeline has been given for his return.

Jamahal Hill

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill was arrested last week during an alleged domestic incident while visiting his family in Michigan.

TMZ Sports reported that Hill was taken into custody in the early morning hours of Monday, November 27, and released later that evening. Early reports revealed that ‘Sweet Dreams’ had an altercation with an unidentified male who suffered “serious or aggravated injury upon him.”

It was later discovered that the alleged victim was Jamahal Hill’s brother, James Anthony Hill.

The UFC star is not expected to be back in court until January, but he decided to address the accusations against him amid all the recent online reports.

“There’s been a lot of reports out about the situation that happened when I was back home in Michigan, visiting for the holidays,” Hill said on his YouTube channel. “I will just say this, at this time, it’s an open case. I’ve been advised not to speak on it, which I know not to speak on it.

“I just can’t wait for the truth to be told in court and I will wait for that day and I look forward to that day,” Hill continued. “The people who know me and know my character and truly, truly rock with me and know who I am, hold on to that and stay true to that and yeah, that’s all I’m gonna say on that” (h/t MMA Mania).

Dana White Comments on Jamahal Hill’s Arrest

Asked for his thoughts on Hill’s situation following Saturday’s UFC event in The Lone Star State, Dana White feigned ignorance.

“I know nothing about it,” White told reporters at the UFC Austin press conference. “I literally don’t know anything. Obviously, it’s something between him and his brother. That’s some family sh*t and I’m sure they’ll figure that out.”

Jamahal Hill is currently sidelined while recovering from a ruptured Achilles he suffered during a charity basketball game in July. The injury forced ‘Sweet Dreams’ to relinquish his 205-pound title, paving the way for Alex Pereira to claim the crown via a second-round knockout of Jiri Prochazka at UFC 295. Upon his return, Hill is expected to challenge ‘Poatan’ in an effort to reclaim the gold he never lost.
