Alex Pereira backed to beat Jamahal Hill in perfect style matchup UFC title

Amid continued speculation regarding how his style will translate at 205 pounds ahead of UFC 291 divisional landing, former middleweight champion, Alex Pereira has been backed to likely take over the throne from champion, Jamahal Hill by teammate, Glover Teixeira – who claims the matchup is “perfect” for his compatriot.

Pereira, the current number one ranked middleweight contender, is slated to make both his Octagon return and his light heavyweight divisional bow at UFC 291 at the end of the month, taking on former light heavyweight champion, Jan Blachowicz in a co-main event slot in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Last time out, the Sao Paulo native, who has held gold at both the middleweight and light heavyweight limits during his tenure with GLORY Kickboxing, suffered a thunderous second round KO loss to arch-rival, Israel Adesanya – as the City Kickboxing staple regained the middleweight title.

Slated to return in a potential title-eliminator against Polish veteran, Blachowicz in Utah at the end of July, Alex Pereira’s knockout rate and ability has been questioned by Hill – with the current champion doubting the Brazilian’s chances of turning in violent finishes at light heavyweight akin to his middleweight stay.

Alex Pereira picked to beat Jamahal Hill in favourable matchup

However, according to former champion, Teixeira – who retired following his January title fight loss to Hill, Alex Pereira would matchup well against the Dana White’s Contender Series product in a projected future championship outing.

“For sure, the style with Jamahal Hill and Alex (Pereira), it’s perfect for Alex,” Glover Teixeira told assembled media following UFC Fight Pass Invitational 4. “Listen, Jamahal Hill is a great fighter, and Jan (Blachowicz) is a great fighter. We’re not looking past Jan over here like that. Styles make fights. My style was more grappling, and Jan is a tremendous striker. He beat Israel Adesanya and he was doing really good in the standup before he started going [for takedowns]. Jan is dangerous, he hits hard.”

“But if everything goes to plan and Alex can get past Jan, for sure I think Jamahal Hill will be an amazing fight for Alex, and it would be nice to see revenge – nothing against Jamahal Hill, he’s a great guy as well, but yeah.” (H/T BJPENN.com)

Daniel Cormier

Daniel Cormier may be a legend in the sport of mixed martial arts, but the man can’t shoot a lick, according to reigning light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill.

Appearing in a video on his YouTube channel, ‘Sweet Dreams’ shared the story of a basketball game that featured himself, welterweight standout Belal Muhammad, and UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier, who decided to show up with a group of ballers ready to take down the UFC’s best on the hardwood.

“Last year, we played a basketball game. International fight week, thought it would be good to get the fighters together and play a game, but no, Daniel Cormier had other things in mind,” Hill said. “Daniel Cormier decided to show up with actual hoopers, and even with this move, one game…failed. Run it back the second game. Despite my efforts and scoring pretty much all the points, they was able to win that game.”

From there, Jamahal Hill directs us to an interview between DC and Belal Muhammad ahead of UFC 288. During their conversation, Cormier brought up the basketball and briefly put the spotlight on himself, making himself sound like the second coming of Scottie Pippen. Cormier even went so far as to compare himself to NBA legend Michael Jordan while cutting in a clip of him making a layup against Muhammad.

Jamahal Hill Exposes Daniel Cormier

Jamahal Hill remembers that basketball game very differently and was quick to call out Cormier for twisting the truth and cherry-picking footage.

“You see now clear that this man will stop at nothing. Manipulation of footage, Belal, the man is in the middle of a weight cut. He just got done cutting weight. He’s a little beside himself; he’s not remembering things 100% clear, and DC uses this time to score in and lie about a victory. We have real footage of how Daniel Cormier looks on the basketball court. Imma take a break. Let’s roll that” (h/t MMA News).

Jamahal Hill picked to beat Alex Pereira it a matchup thing though UFC

Expected to attempt his first defense of the undisputed light heavyweight title before the close of the year, Jamahal Hill has been picked to likely hand former UFC middleweight champion, Alex Pereira a loss in a potential future championship showdown.

Hill, the first product of Dana White’s Contender Series to strike gold under the banner of the UFC, managed to do so back in January at UFC 283 in Brazil, defeating former champion and Alex Pereira’s compatriot, Glover Teixeira in the pair’s vacant title fight.

Expected to return to the Octagon – potentially in September of October of this year, Illinois native, Hill has been tipped to fight former division champion, Jiri Prochazka in his first title defense – with the Czech Republic native vacating his title back in December of last year after suffering a catastrophic shoulder injury.

Jamahal Hill tipped to defeat Alex Pereira in future title fight

And while the surging champion is already preoccupied with Prochazka, he has been picked to solidly defeat former champion, Pereira – if they ever share the Octagon.

“I think Jamahal Hill beats him (Alex Pereira) too,” Anthony Smith told Ariel Helwani on The MMa Hour. “It’s a matchup thing, though. It’s a matchup thing. There’s a lot of guys at light heavyweight that he’ll beat and could look really great doing it. Jan Blachowicz is tough.”

For now, however, Pereira is slated to make a light heavyweight division debut at UFC 291 in July, taking on former division champion, Jan Blachowicz, and according to Smith, the Brazilian could also struggle with him – before any title fight.

“Again, we’re talking about leg kicks here – Jan Blachowicz might be the best kick defender in the entire UFC, and I’ve been saying that for a long time,” Smith explained. “But, if you go back and even watch the (Israel) Adesnaya fight, it all starts with the leg kicks.”

Jamahal Hill unsure fight with Jiri Prochazka happens it's next man up UFC

Expected to make a return to the Octagon potentially in September, current undisputed UFC light heavyweight champion, Jamahal Hill has claimed that he has yet to hear from the promotion regarding a fight with former gold holder, Jiri Prochazka, casting doubt on a showdown between the two.

Hill, a product of Dana White’s Contender Series – has been sidelined since he landed the vacant light heavyweight title at UFC 283 back in January, travelling to Brazil to secure a unanimous decision victory against former champion and common-foe, Glover Teixeira.

As for Prochazka, the Czech Republic native most recently featured in the main event of UFC 275 in Singapore last summer, landing a fifth round rallying submission win over then-champion, Teixeira – submitting the Brazilian with a rear-naked choke.

Expected to make his return in a title rematch with Teixeira at UFC 282 last December, Prochazka vacated the title after he suffered a catastrophic shoulder injury, sidelining him from active competition.

Jamahal Hill discusses potential fight with Jiri Prochazka this year

Tipped to return to the Octagon in a championship fight with Hill, Prochazka, according to the former, has yet to be identified as a definite challenger next, with the current champion welcoming all comers instead ahead of an expected September comeback.

“I heard the same thing y’all heard, summertime,” Jamahal Hill said of his next fight during an interview with The Schmo. “It’s still, where you at though? Where you at though? I mean, I haven’t heard anything. I was waiting for the call, I’m ready to go. At this point, it’s just, I don’t care, it’s next man up now. Whoever peaks their head out first, whoever separates themself from the pack, whoever solidifies [themselves] as the number one contender, whoever, the f*ck they [the UFC] send. It is what it is – send however, just give me a name. I don’t care who it is.”

“Hopefully is somewhere in September or October,” Jamahal Hill explained. “I really, really, really wouldn’t want to wait until those times, which now I don’t really have much of a choice But, I really don’t want to wait past that. I wanted to fight at least two more times this year as champion and I don’t know, bro – it’s not my timetable. I’m working on other people’s schedule right now. I’m ready to go. I’m ready to fight and just waiting for a name.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com

Alex Pereira tipped to challenge for title with UFC 291 win he's in a pretty damn good spot

UFC president, Dana White has confirmed that while nothing his “guaranteed” for former middleweight champion, Alex Pereira in terms of a title siege at the light heavyweight limit following his UFC 291 next month, a victory over fellow ex-titleholder, Jan Blachowicz would land him in a “pretty damn good spot” to stake his claim.

Pereira, the current #1 ranked middleweight contender, is slated to make his Octagon return at UFC 291 in July – making his light heavyweight division debut in an outing against former undisputed division kingpin, Blachowicz in a co-main event bracket.

Atop that pay-per-view event in Salt Lake City, Utah – a high-stakes potential lightweight title-eliminator is set – with former interim division champions, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje topping the Delta Center event.

Initially suggesting an immediate title offing with current undisputed light heavyweight best, Jamahal Hill in his divisional bow, Pereira, a former two-weight GLORY Kickboxing gold holder has been pitted against Polish veteran, Blachowicz instead.

Alex Pereira calls for title opportunity at light heavyweight limit

However, according to White, the Sao Paulo striker may not have to wait long to potentially fight for light heavyweight spoils in a bid to reclaim UFC gold, with a victory over Blachowicz appearing to prime him for another championship siege.

“Nothing is ever guaranteed,” Dana White told assembled media following UFC Vegas 74. “But yeah, if he (Alex Pereira) beats Jan (Blachowicz), he’s in a pretty damn good spot [to fight for a light heavyweight championship]. [It’s] not a bad place to be if you beat Jan.”

Most recently headlining UFC 287 back in April of this year, Brazilian knockout artist, Pereira suffered a stunning second round KO loss to four-fight rival, Israel Adesanya – dropping the undisputed middleweight crown in the pair’s Octagon rematch in Miami, Florida.

Alex Pereira shared details about his recent run-in with longtime rival Israel Adesanya at an airport.

Pereira has had a long and storied history with ‘The Last Stylebender’ dating back to their days competing under the GLORY Kickboxing banner in the 2010s. It was there that the Brazilian boogeyman scored back-to-back wins against Adesanya, including a vicious third-round knockout at Glory of Heroes 15 in 2017. Fast forward five years and the two familiar foes would meet once again inside the Octagon. Pereira picked up right where he left off, earning a shocking fifth-round knockout to capture the middleweight world championship at UFC 281.

Adesanya would finally break through, scoring his own highlight-reel-worthy knockout against Alex Pereira in their MMA rematch at UFC 287. Despite the two fighters sitting at 1-1 inside the Octagon, both men have seemingly accepted that their April rematch was the end of the line and neither man appears to hold ill will toward the other. During an appearance on MMA Fighting’s Portuguese-language podcast Trocação Franca, Alex Pereira discussed his recent run-in with Adesanya while departing Australia and revealed that the two combat sports icons were very cordial with one another, even sharing a laugh during the brief interaction.

“We were both in Australia and at the same hotel, some people from my crew saw him there but we never actually met there,” Pereira said. “When we were leaving, at the Los Angeles [to] New York connection, we met in the line and said hi, had some laughs. I got there first, he came in after, and we greeted.”

Alex Pereira admits that a rivalry with ‘The Last Stylebender’ will always exist, but right now, ‘Poatan’ is turning his attention toward his next test, Jan Blachowicz.

“The rivalry will always exist,” Pereira said. “I’m fighting [Jan Blachowicz] now, I have to have rivalry with the guy I’m fighting, you know? He’s in there and he wants to kill me, and I want to do the same to him. How am I going to treat him [nicely]? I have to be mean there.

“It’s the same thing with Adesanya. For example, if I were to fight him again, we would have a rivalry. But now, why? We’ll meet; Adesanya, he’s there with a teammate, I’m in the same spot, and we can’t [cross paths] because we’ll destroy the whole place and beat each other up? That doesn’t exist. That type of rivalry doesn’t exist with me.”

Alex Pereira Sets Sights on Conquering the Light Heavyweight Division Before an Inevitable Return to Middleweight

Alex Pereira’s cut to the middleweight division was a daunting task that required weeks of preparation and torment, but ‘Poatan’ is confident that he can continue to compete at 185 should the opportunity present itself. For now, the former multi-time world champion is going to give his body a rest by competing at light heavyweight but he fully intends on making his way back to middleweight once he has conquered the 205-pound weight class.

“I can make 185 right now,” he said. “If I had to make [185] on July 29. I could, but I have to give my body a rest from this weight cut. So I’ll fight two or three times in this division. I don’t know what can happen [next], but I think I’ll be recovered to fight again at 185.”

With his light heavyweight debut scheduled for UFC 291 on July 29, Alex Pereira is already looking ahead to a potential clash with the division’s reigning titleholder, Jamahal Hill.

“It’s a fight that will sell a lot,” Pereira said of potentially facing Hill. “I think he’s going to fight one more time and I’ll root for him to win, because it’s a fight that will sell a lot, and that’s a fight I want, if I were to choose. Between Prochazka and Jamahal, I’d choose Jamahal.”

Alex Pereira suggested that his next opponent, Jan Blachowicz, is a more technical fighter than Hill, but recognizes that ‘Sweet Dreams’ will present a more intriguing matchup for the fans and himself.

“I think Blachowicz is more technical,” Pereira added. “Jamahal is more crazy, hits a bit too open — which is dangerous, but at that same time that’s very good for me.”
