One-time UFC light heavyweight title challenger, Anthony Smith has claimed he believes he will secure the first shot at division gold against recently minted undisputed kingpin, Jamahal Hill – after the duo saw their March 11. main event slot cancelled last year.

Initially scheduled to headline a Las Vegas event against Dana White’s Contender Series alum, Hill on March 11. in ‘Sin City’ – Smith saw the pairing shelved amid the light heavyweight title fight draw featuring Jan Blachowicz, and Magomed Ankalaev.

As a result, former champion, Glover Teixeira headlined UFC 283 earlier this month against the aforenoted, Hill in the former’s native Brazil, with the latter landing vacant title spoils courtesy of a unanimous decision win

Initially, Hill was linked with both immediate title defenses against the pair of middleweight champion, Alex Pereira, and former light heavyweight best, Jiri Prochazka.

Anthony Smith remains confident he slides into the UFC title picture

And according to Smith, while Hill has yet to book his first outing in the weeks since his championship coronation, he believes he may slide in and fight for gold next – laying out the division circumstances.

“Glover (Teixeira) is out because he retired; (Aleksandar) Rakic is still hurt, I don’t know what’s going on with Jan (Blachowicz), and (Magomed) Ankalaev,” Anthony Smith told Michael Bisping on the Believe You Me podcast. “If I had to guess, I’m going to be very honest, I think it’s going to end up being me. Jiri said on Ariel (Helwani’s) show that he still needed some time, he wanted his body to get right, then Jamahal (Hill) had a response saying he wants to wait for Jiir, but he needs an answer by April. He wants to know, ‘Are you going or not?’ So, I think I’ll fight before then, and I don’t know if Jiri is going to be ready, I think he’s rushing it.”

“… I think he’s (Jiri Prochazka) optimistic, and for his sake, I hope he is able to fight, because I think he deserves it. He never lost the title. I would love to see Jamahal versus each other, but if it’s not Jiri, I think that I’m the next one to fight,” Anthony Smith explained. “I think I would be next in line.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Sidelined since UFC 277 back in July of last year, Nebraska veteran, Anthony Smith suffered an ankle injury en route to a second round ground strikes TKO loss to the above-mentioned, Magomed Ankalaev.

Jamahal Hill sets summer deadline for grudge match UFC title fight with Jiri Prochazka

Newly crowned UFC light-heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill has plans for his first title defense, and he wants the last man to hold the title, former champion Jiri Prochazka.

During an epic Fight of the Year winning affair between Prochazka and former champion Glover Teixeira at UFC 275, Prochazka submitted the Brazilian with a mere 28 seconds left in the fifth and final round to become the UFC light-heavyweight champion.

Prochazka was expected to make his first title defense in an immediate rematch with Teixeira, up until he suffered a gruesome shoulder injury that forced him out of the bout.

Considering, the UFC decided to make a vacant title fight between no. 2 ranked Magomed Ankalaev and no. 3 ranked former champion Jan Blachowicz at that same event, UFC 282, instead.

Once that fight ended in a draw, we were once again left without a champion, so the UFC made another vacant title bout, this one between then no. 7 ranked Jamahal Hill and his opponent that got passed up the month prior, Glover Teixeira, at UFC 283.

Hill put on a performance of a lifetime against Teixeira, winning all five rounds en route to the unanimous decision victory.

Now, Hill is already looking ahead, and he wants to fight the most dangerous man in the division, perhaps in the sport, Jiri Prochazka:

“I’ve wanted to fight Jiri for a long time. I’m willing to wait (un)til July, August, but past that I think it’s (the) next man up.”

This is a respectable timeline. It gives Prochazka time to recover and get himself into a training camp, but if it isn’t enough time, Hill still wants to remain active and defend his title.

Jiri Prochazka is not only a former UFC light-heavyweight champion, but also a former Rizin light-heavyweight champion. What’s more, he never lost either belt in a fight; he defended the Rizin title a single time prior vacating it for a UFC contract, and he was of course forced to vacate his UFC title due to the injury he recently suffered.

Prochazka is 29-3-1 as a professional with 28 finishes, 25 of which come via knockout. He submitted the greatest grappler to ever grace the UFC’s 205 lb division, he’s on a 13-fight win streak, and he’s gone 23-1-1 in his last 25, avenging the only defeat in that time via knockout.

Jamahal Hill on the other hand is just 12-1 (1 NC) with seven knockouts, 13-1 with eight knockouts if you count his no contest, which was overturned due to a failed drug test (marijuana). But, despite his relative inexperience, Hill is incredibly well equipped to keep that title for the foreseeable future.

Does Jamahal Hill end up fighting Jiri Prochazka next?

Jamahal Hill Jon Jones UFC

After clinching the vacant light heavyweight championship last weekend in the main event of UFC 283, Dana White’s Contender Series product, Jamahal Hill has admitted he has been chasing a fight with former two-time division champion, Jon Jones since his transition to promotion. And believes a future clash is possible.

Hill, who headlined UFC 283 earlier this month in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – featured in a vacant light heavyweight championship fight against home town favorite and former undisputed titleholder, Glover Teixeira, minting himself as the champion in a unanimous decision victory.

Welcoming a future fight with Rochester native, Jones, Hill will have to lay in wait to challenge the decorated former champion, who recently booked his Octagon return.

Slated to make his first appearance in over three years on March 4. atop a UFC 285 pay-per-view event, Jones will headline in a vacant heavyweight title offing against former interim titleholder, Ciryl Gane – making his divisional bow.

Last time out, back in February 2020, look-see-do veteran, Jones successfully defended his light heavyweight title with a close, unanimous decision win over Dominick Reyes, before vacating the crown in August of that year.

Jamahal Hill discusses potential future clash with Jon Jones

According to Hill, however, despite Jones’ impending move to the heavyweight ranks, should the former 205lbs titleholder plan a return his former stomping grounds, the former would welcome that matchup with open arms.

“Yeah, 1,000%,” Jamahal Hill replied when asked if he would be interested in fighting Jon Jones during an appearance on the Believe You Me podcast. “I eventually want to build to a fight against Jon (Jones). That’s what – he’s the ultimate test, you know. He was – from the time that I came and decided I’m gonna make this run – at first, when it first started, it was Anderson Silva, you know. He was the man, it was 2010 and things like that.”

“After he (Silva) had his injury and things like that, I kinda fell off from the sport, that’s another reason why I started working and things like that,” Jahamhal Hill explained. “I didn’t really see the money and all of that. And then Conor (McGregor) happened, and then it’s like, Conor kinda got that cause of (Jose) Aldo who was undefeated for 10 years. He had somebody to chase, I needed somebody to chase. And this whole time, I’ve been chasing Jon – just that fight.”
