A Bellator bantamweight matchup between the returning James Gallagher and veteran Brett Johns has been booked for Bellator Dublin on September 23rd.

News of the booking was first reported by MMA journalist Ariel Helwani.

Gallagher returns to the Bellator cage following an injury that forced him to pull out of the Bellator Bantamweight World Grand Prix. He was allegedly set to face Magomed Magomedov but pulled out of the tournament before matchups were officially announced.

Gallagher’s last fight came against Patchy Mix at Bellator 270. He lost via third-round submission after winning four-straight fights before.

Gallagher has earned wins over the likes of Anthony Taylor, Roman Salazar, and Jeremiah Labiano during his Bellator career. A former SBG Ireland teammate of Conor McGregor, he recently made the move to the United States to train at Glory MMA & Fitness in Missouri under head coach James Krause.

Gallagher will face a game opponent in Johns, who has won three of his last four fights and most recently finished Khurshed Kakhorov at Bellator 275. Before signing with Bellator, he fought in the UFC against top bantamweights such as current champion Aljamain Sterling and Pedro Munhoz.

The Bellator Dublin card is slated to be headlined by a light heavyweight matchup between No. 10 Melvin Manhoef and former UFC title challenger Yoel Romero.

Conor McGregor took to Twitter to give James Gallagher some words of advice and encouragement after his loss at Bellator 270 to Patchy Mix.

Gallagher was submitted by Mix in the beginning of the third round by a mounted guillotine. The fight was very close going into the third and final round before Mix submitted Gallagher. The Irish crowd was stunned by the outcome of the fight. Mcgregor had some words for what happened as well.

“Jimmy boy, that was some f*cking showing there yeah? what a crowd.” McGregor said, “Kid’s 23-24 years of age selling out a stadium like that. Got him with a guillotine, but he was fresh as a daisy. Yeah bro, let that right hook go, boom that right hook go. Big right venomous body kick…. ‘oh he got caught with a ghillie.’ So what? Who gives a f*ck, not a scratch on your kid. You need that experience. That experience is worth more than any amount of money you’re gonna make in your entire career.”

Many believe that Gallagher was trying to follow in McGregor’s footsteps by talking a lot of trash and having an extraordinary amount of confidence in his skills

This is only Gallagher’s second loss inside the octagon as a professional fighter. His first loss came via KO by Ricky Bandejas back in 2018.

If anyone knows a thing or two about bouncing back from a devastating and embarrassing loss, it is McGregor. After losing to Nate Diaz on short notice back in 2016, McGregor came back to beat him in a five round war. He then went on to become a champion in two divisions later on that year when he defeated Eddie Alvarez via TKO.

Gallagher should bounce back from this loss and still has a ton of potential to be a fantastic fighter for Bellator. Gallagher is still young as he just turns 26 later on this month.

LowKick MMA will be bringing you Bellator 270: Queally vs. Pitbull 2 results throughout the night (Sat. 30th. October 2021) live from the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland.

Taking main event status on the promotion’s return to Dublin — the vacant lightweight title is up for grabs between Peter ‘The Showstopper’ Queally and division veteran, Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire — as the pair rematch following a May matchup earlier this year.

Initially matching up at Bellator 258, Waterford native, Queally managed to score an eventual second round TKO victory due to a doctor’s stoppage at the end of the frame, after he opened up a significant laceration on the hairline of Pitbull via a series of slashing elbows from the bottom.

The win came as Queally’s second straight under the promotion’s banner following an impressive rallying effort against common-foe, Ryan Scope back at the 3Arena in September of 2019.

For Brazilian veteran, Pitbull, the loss came as his second consecutively following a unanimous decision loss to Tofiq Musayev under the Rizin FF banner back in December 2019.

In the night’s co-headliner, a pivotal bantamweight matchup between streaking grappling standout, James ‘The Strabanimal’ Gallagher and the #3 ranked one-time title challenger, Patchy ‘No Love’ Mix.

Unbeaten in his last four on the bounce, Strabane native, Gallagher most recently headlined Bellator Euro Series 9 in October of last year in Milan, Italy — submitting Cal Ellenor with a first round rear-naked choke.

For New York native, Mix, the one-time bantamweight title challenger returned from his first career loss in May — stopping short-notice replacement, Albert Morales with a third round arm-triangle.
