Jan Blachowicz has a unique pre-fight ritual which includes touching a rope he got from a hanged man he found in a forest.
“‘When you find a hanged man, you take his rope for luck,” Blachowicz said on his YouTube channel (via MMAFighting). “‘That’s what people believed in the old days.’ I checked the internet, and sure enough, that is exactly what people thought and believed in. If you don’t believe me, check for yourself.”
According to some newspapers in Europe, what Blachowicz is saying is actually true.
“In the 1880s, it was apparently not unusual for Parisian medical students to sell bits of the rope that were still attached around the necks of suicides brought into the hospitals,” according to the paper “Executing Magic in the Modern Era: Criminal Bodies and the Gallows in Popular Medicine,” which was published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information. “One report tells of a piece given to a chemist’s assistant in Amiens, who then went on to win one hundred thousand francs in a lottery.”
“There was huge demand in Paris for hanging rope as a lucky charm, it reported, noting that French gamblers and the superstitious had to rely on suicides for pieces,” the paper adds.
Jan Blachowicz is set to fight Dominick Reyes in the co-main event of UFC 253 for the vacant light heavyweight title. It is a very intriguing matchup and Blachowicz has kept the tradition for this fight. Although he has done it his whole career, and talked to the UFC about it, they have never used it in the pre-fight interviews.
“Maybe the UFC also had the same problem with the sound, I need to ask them about that,” he said. “That’s some ‘Paranormal Activity’ stuff right there.”

Light-heavyweight title challenger Dominick Reyes thinks his UFC 253 opponent, Jan Blachowicz represents a much tougher task than long-time 205lb king Jon Jones.
On Wednesday it was announced Reyes will be squaring off against the Polish power-puncher for the light-heavyweight title made vacant by Jones earlier in the week. ‘Bones’ has since announced he has begun negotiations with the UFC about his eagerly anticipated heavyweight debut.
Speaking to ESPN after the announcement of his UFC 253 title fight Reyes had nothing but good things to say about Blachowicz who he believes is a much more dangerous prospect than the departing champion Jones.
“Jan is a beast by the way. I’ve been impressed with Jan for years. I’ve been trying to fight Jan since I beat Cannonier because I respect the guys game. He is a very technical striker, he has more power than Jon,” Reyes said. “I think he is a more dangerous fight for me to be 100 percent honest. He is a counter striker with a lot of power and has a BJJ black belt. He is very technical everywhere. Jon doesn’t counter striker and has no power and is not that technical, he is just tricky.”
Reyes is coming off a controversial decision loss to Jones and has gone on record countless times expressing his belief that he should have emerged victorious at UFC 247. Prior to that he had a perfect 6-0 record in the UFC and had picked up big wins over the likes of Chris Weidman, Volkan Oezdemir, and Jared Cannonier.
Blachowicz is currently riding a three-fight win streak. The 37-year-old has knocked out Luke Rockhold and Corey Anderson as well as picking up a unanimous decision over ‘Jacare’ Souza during his rise into light-heavyweight title contention.
UFC 253 takes place on September 26 in Las Vegas. Israel Adesanya is scheduled to defend his middleweight title against Paulo Costa in the main event of the evening.

UFC president Dana White has confirmed Dominick Reyes and Jan Blachowicz will fight for the chance to become the next light-heavyweight champion.
Long-time 205lb king Jon Jones officially relinquished his title earlier this week and began talks for a move up to the heavyweight division.
On the same day, it was reported Reyes and Blachowicz would fight at UFC 253 and fans began to speculate the two contenders would be competing for UFC gold.
The UFC boss spoke to reporter’s post-fight at Dana White’s Contender Series 4: Week 3 to confirm Reyes and Blachowicz will fight for the vacant light-heavyweight title on September 26.
“It’s official, yeah,” White said. “While we were here, I actually went live on SportsCenter and announced it between one of the fights and announced all of that.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)
Reyes now has the chance to win a UFC title for the second straight fight. The 30-year-old previously challenger Jones at UFC 247 and was unlucky to come away the loser. ‘Bones’ picked up a unanimous decision win on the night, but many believe he was on the right side of bad judging.
Blachowicz is currently riding a three-fight win streak heading into his first UFC title fight. The Polish power puncher has scored knockout wins over Luke Rockhold and Corey Anderson as well as a decision win over ‘Jacare’ Souza during an impressive 2019.
