UFC Vegas 75 Vettori vs Cannonier Betting Preview

In a bid to separate themselves from the best of the rest ahead of UFC Vegas 75 this weekend, middleweight division contenders, Marvin Vettori and Jared Cannonier will look to kickstart their track to a potential second siege at Octagon gold under the promotion’s banner.

Vettori, a one-time middleweight title challenger and the current #3 ranked division contender, managed to retain his slot within the division’s top-3 standings earlier this year on the main card of UFC 286 in March, defeating Georgian contender, Roman Dolidze in a unanimous decision win at The O2 Arena.

As for Cannonier, the #4 ranked challenger, successfully rebounded to winning-ways off the back of his unsuccessfult title challenge against Israel Adesanya during International Fight Week last summer, defeating Sean Strickland in a close, split decision win at UFC Vegas 66 last December in a main event clash.

And with both contenders likely more than a win away from a potential rematch and trilogy bout with Adesanya – in Vettori’s case, fans are likely undecided when it comes to wagering and betting on this week’s headliner.

According to BetWay, Vettori is fastly closing as a quite decent betting favorite at -120 to defeat Cannonier this weekend in ‘Sin City’, however, with Cannonier closing himself as an underdog at a considerable +160 at the time of publication.

Himself twice sharing the Octagon with two-time and current undisputed middleweight champion, Adesanya, Italian contender, Vettori pushed the City Kickboxing staple to his limit in their first clash back in 2018, dropping a close decision loss.

And in the pair’s title rematch at UFC 263, the Trento native once more lost a decision to Adesanya – this time with undisputed middleweight spoils on the line

In outings since, Vettori has bounced back to the winner’s enclosure with victories against Paulo Costa, and the above-mentioned, Dolidze – with a loss to former champion and common-foe, Robert Whittaker sandwiched between.

Earning his UFC 276 title fight with Adesanya off the back of a two-fight winning streak, Cannonier, a former light heavyweight under the banner of the promotion, turned in back-to-back wins over Kelvin Gastelum, before finishing perennial contender, Derek Brunson with a stunning series of elbow strikes, resulting in a KO win in February of last year.

Off note on the main card to boot, Armenian grappling and wrestling talent, Armen Tsarukyan is slated to return to the Octagon – taking on veteran Brazilian contender, Joaquim Silva.

Attempting to extend his winning run to two fights after a recent decision success over Damir Ismagulov, Tsarukyan is closing as a whopping -1,000 betting favorite to defeat the returning +600 underdog, Silva at the UFC Apex facility.

12-3 as a professional, renowned finisher, Silva most recently defeated Jesse Ronson back in October of last year – snapping a three-fight losing run.

A heralded contender at the 155 pound limit, Tsarukyan has turned in notable Octagon victories against the likes of Olivier Aubin-Mercier, Davi Ramos, Matt Frevola, and Spanish grappler, Joel Alvarez.

Tsarukyan’s sole Octagon professional losses have come against Polish standout, Mateusz Gamrot, while in his organizational  bow, dropped a decision loss to current undisputed lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev

Jared Cannonier readying for a rematch with Israel Adesanya in Sydney: ‘I’m definitely calling for it’

Jared Cannonier

Jared Cannonier is ready to pack his bags and head for the land down under if it means another opportunity to become the UFC middleweight champion.

‘Killa Gorilla’ is gearing up for a high-stakes 185-pound clash with fellow-top contender Marvin Vettori at a Fight Night event on June 17. With major title implications on the line, Jared Cannonier is confident that a win over ‘The Italian Dream’ will earn him a rematch with reigning middleweight king Israel Adesanya. In an interview with MiddleEasy, Cannonier confirmed that his passport is up to date and he will be more than ready to hop a plane to Sydney should the opportunity present itself.

“Oh, I’m getting ready. I’ll definitely be ready to fight in Sydney, my passport is up to date, my bags will be packed,” Cannonier said. “The way I plan on performing (against Vettori), yeah, I’m definitely gonna be ready to step in and make it happen. But who knows. There’s talks of him going up to light heavyweight.

The UFC will head back to Australia on September 10 for UFC 293, seven months removed from the promotion’s last appearance in the country which delivered an instant classic between reigning lightweight champion Islam Makhachev and featherweight titleholder Alexander Volkanovski.

Israel Adesanya Could Leave Jared Cannonier and Other Potential Contenders Waiting in Line for Quite a While

Currently, Robert Whittaker and Dricus du Plessis are tipped for a title eliminator at UFC 290 on July 8 with the winner securing their opportunity at the 185-pound crown. Where that leaves Jared Cannonier remains to be seen, particularly if he wins on June 17. However, it’s altogether possible that all three men could be left out in the cold for the time being as ‘The Last Stylebender’ circles a potential clash with reigning light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill.

“It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out… Either he goes up to light heavyweight and fights Jamahal out there or they have no choice but to put me in there,” Cannonier continued. “I’m definitely calling for it after I put Marvin’s lights out.”

Jared Cannonier has already had one crack at dethroning Israel Adesanya, meeting the ‘Stylebender’ at UFC 276. ‘Killa Gorilla’ came up short, surrendering a unanimous decision victory to the two-time champ. He has since bounced back, earning a split decision win over controversial contender Sean Strickland. If he can make it back-to-back wins with a decisive victory over Marvin Vettori, Cannonier will be undeniably back in the middleweight title picture.

Jared Cannonier recently conveyed that he bears no animosity toward referee Jason Herzog for the controversial stoppage of his fight against Nassourdine Imavov at UFC Fight Night Louisville.

Cannonier suffered a fourth-round TKO loss to Imavov in June when Herzog stepped in to halt the fight as the former UFC middleweight title challenger attempted to defend himself against a relentless barrage of strikes from his opponent.

Although “The Killa Gorilla” appeared shaken before the stoppage, it didn’t seem that he was on the brink of being finished, as evidenced by his visible frustration and immediate protest of the referee’s decision.

Herzog, widely regarded as one of the most respected and experienced referees in MMA, faced intense scrutiny from the MMA community for what many deemed a premature stoppage. Even Cannonier, at the time, described the entire situation as “gut-wrenching.”

Despite the controversy, “The Killa Gorilla,” who is set to make his return to the Octagon this Saturday to headline a Fight Night event against the undefeated Caio Borralho, insists that he holds no grudges against Herzog for the loss…

Cannonier on Herzog’s Judgment: ‘We All Make Mistakes’

During a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Cannonier opened up about his stoppage loss to Imavov. The 40-year-old Texan emphasized that Herzog wasn’t at fault, noting that the referee was simply fulfilling his duty and, in fact, spared him from taking further damage from his opponent.

“I’m not going to be salty like that. Herzog is a good referee,” Cannonier said. “I mean, he’s human; we all make mistakes or erroneous judgments, you know what I mean? To whatever degree we may perceive them to be, he was just doing his job in keeping me safe—or, you know what I’m saying, getting paid off to let the Frenchman win, I don’t know. But whatever the f**k, man. I didn’t go in there and knock out Imavov, so this is what I have to deal with.”

Cannonier further expressed that he wants to ensure such mistakes don’t occur again.

“I get the lessons from the unfortunate things that may have happened, like these stoppages and sh*t like that. Hopefully, it doesn’t happen again. Hopefully, these refs will give me an opportunity—if they see me on my feet, don’t stop the fight. You won’t see me on my feet getting battered like a speed bag making that sound or something like that.”

Cannonier’s loss was a tough setback, especially after his impressive back-to-back victories over Marvin Vettori and Sean Strickland. A win would have positioned him as a prime contender for a second shot at the championship, but now he finds himself pushed further down the ranks in the contender lineup.
