UFC middleweight contender, Sean Strickland has been forced from a scheduled October 15. Fight Night billed main event clash with recent title challenger, Jared Cannonier, after the North Carolina native suffered a gruesome finger infection whilst training earlier this month.

Strickland, the current #7 ranked middleweight contender, last featured on the main card of UFC 276 back in July during International Fight Week, suffering a brutal first round knockout loss to the surging incoming title challenger, Alex Pereira.

Headlining that UFC 276 event, Cannonier challenged for undisputed middleweight gold against division pacesetter, Israel Adesanya, dropping a unanimous decision loss to the Nigerian-Kiwi in a forgettable headlining matchup.

Sean Strickland is set to undergo a surgical procedure to address his hand injury

Booked to make a rather quickfire Octagon return following his first round knockout loss, Strickland has since been forced to withdraw from his October 15. main event clash after suffering a rather gruesome finger infection during training, after he punched a sparring partner’s tooth inadvertently. Sean Strickland is now expected to undergo a surgical procedure to boot.

Following Dana White’s Contender Series last night, White, who confirmed Strickland’s cancelled fight with Cannonier – also confirmed that the pairing had been entirely scrapped, with Cannonier also removed from the October card as a result

Riding an impressive run of six consecutive victories ahead of his UFC 276 loss to Pereira, Sean Strickland had headlined UFC Vegas 47 back in February, where he managed to secure a close, split decision win over Jack Hermansson at the UFC Apex facility.

The UFC Vegas 62 card now contains 10 total fights, with the promotion yet to confirm an official headliner in place of Strickland vs. Cannonier at the time of publication. The next highest-profile fight on the card comes in the form of a flyweight matchup between Russian technician, Askar Askarov, and Brandon Royval.

Dana White Guarantees Israel Adesanya vs. Alex Pereira Fight Will Be ‘Absolutely Batsh** Nuts’

Israel Adesanya successfully defended his title against Jared Cannonier at UFC 276. Unfortunately, the fight failed to wow the thousands in attendance and the millions watching around the world.

Fans were reportedly flocking to the exits of the T-Mobile Arena while the main event was in full swing. ‘The Last Stylebender’ was once again criticized for his failure to live up to the hype he himself built for the title bout which has become a recurring theme in Adesanya’s title fights.

Speaking to the press following UFC Long Island on Saturday, Dana White was asked his thoughts on Israel Adesanya’s latest fight with Cannonier.

“He won,” said White. “I don’t know if it was the performance that he wanted to give or that he was selling leading into that fight. The other thing is, you know, I don’t think his opponent was very aggressive either. It takes two to make a great fight.”

White was quick to pivot to Adesanya’s next bout which will come against his former Glory kickboxing opponent Alex Pereira who scored a highlight reel first-round knockout over Sean Strickland on the same night that Adesanya defeated Cannonier in Las Vegas.

“It’s interesting. It won’t happen in the next fight. When you’re sitting here in my position, you can’t give too many guarantees. I can say ‘stylistically on paper this should be’, or you know, ‘we feel this is going to be’… I guarantee you. I absolutely positively guarantee you that the next fight that Israel Adesanya fights will be absolutely batsh*t nuts.”

Israel Adesanya’s Simple, But Effective Style May Not Work Against ‘Poatan’

In his last six bouts, Adesanya has five victories, only one by finish when he knocked out challenger Paulo Costa at UFC 253. Since then, ‘The Last Stylebender’ has one loss to then-light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz and three straight victories, all by decision.

Adesanya has adopted a style of keeping distance from his opponents, masterfully defending takedown attempts and counter-striking to outpoint his challengers. While there is no disputing that the method has been effective for the reigning middleweight world champion, it leaves many fans sitting on their hands rather than cheering for more.

This style could prove to be a mistake should he attempt to implement it in the highly anticipated showdown between himself and the newly ranked contender Alex Pereira. The two have squared off twice under the Glory of Heroes banner with ‘Poatan’ walking away the victor in both outings. In their second contest at Glory of Heroes 15, Pereira became the first, and to this day, the only man to knock out ‘The Last Stylebender’ with a crushing left.

Pereira will be looking to repeat history while Adesanya hopes to rewrite it when the two meet inside the Octagon for the first time.

Undisputed UFC middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya has reflected on his UFC 276 performance against recent title chaser, Jared Cannonier, admitting that his display was something he was “happy” with – denying claims from spectators who questioned his activity against the Texan.

Adesanya, who headlined UFC 276 earlier this month during International Fight Week, managed to successfully defend his undisputed middleweight crown, handing Cannonier a unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 50-45) loss.

However, immediately following the fight, Adesanya was widely criticized for his performance against Cannonier, where the two rarely engaged for lengthy exchanges, with actor and Hollywood lead, Chris Pratt infamously first taking umbrage with Adesanya’s display, before eventually refuting his comments.

Breaking down his own performance against challenger, Cannonier, City Kickboxing staple, Adesanya insisted that he was “happy” with his display.

“I rewatched it two days after the fight and I watched it once, that’s all I needed for now,” Israel Adesanya said on his YouTube channel. “I wasn’t ecstatic about the performance, but I was happy with it. It wasn’t what people were trying to make it out to be…”

“I didn’t really take my foot off the gas too much,” Israel Adesanya explained. “The only time I wasn’t able to was when he (Jared Cannonier) held me against the fence. I broke away when I needed to and kept on fighting, as soon as I broke away. I’d normally just keep on him straight away because I know he’s tired from holding me, because I could feel his squeeze just holding me… When he weakened, I got away and put pressure on him straight away, trying to create openings. I just wasn’t able to create the ones that I needed at the time. But yeah, these things happen.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Israel Adesanya is expected to fight Alex Pereira before the end of the year

Securing his sixth successful defense of the middleweight crown, Adesanya is now expected to draw former kickboxing opponent, Alex Pereira before the end of this year in his next title showdown – with the Brazilian stopping Sean Strickland with a brutal first round KO also at UFC 276.

Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic Park star, Chris Pratt has claimed that he is “not a fan” of UFC middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya’s “pitter-patter” approach to recent division title defenses, explaining how he was left underwhelmed by the titleholder’s UFC 276 headliner against Jared Cannonier.

Israel Adesanya, who headlined Saturday’s card at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada – managed to successfully land his fifth consecutive defense of the division title against Cannonier, however, was met with a series of boos and jeers from the attending audience, as well as receiving criticism for his performance across social media.

Teasing a statement-making performance against the Texan challenger during fight week, Adesanya managed to emerge from ‘Sin City’ with his title in two off the back of a unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 50-45) win, however, many pointed to the Nigerian-Kiwi’s continued tendency to sit on the outside and more-or-less point fight to an extent, without ever over exerting himself en route to another title retention.

Chris Pratt could not hide his disappointment with Israel Adesanya’s UFC 276 display

A severe critic of Israel Adesanya’s performance and display at UFC 276 comes in the form of popular actor, Pratt, who shared his thoughts on the City Kickboxing striker’s approach on the UFC 276 post-fight show.

“I’m gonna say this as humbly as I can, as a guy who never stepped in the Octagon, I don’t know this game, I’m just an actor,” Chris Pratt said on the UFC 276 post-fight show. “But I’m not a fan, man. I’m not a fan of coming out, like, all that talk and then just kind of putting on a little bit of a pitter-patter.”

“I’m like, ‘Come on, man. Cash on that.’” Chris Pratt explained. “You’ve got to cash that promise of being so badass. If I bet with my money, I would bet (Israel) Adesanya would’ve done something like that. But I was hoping to see (Jared) Cannonier make it.” (Transcribed by BloodyElbow)

Adesanya, who received major plaudits across social media for his Undertaker-themed walkout ahead of his main event clash with Cannonier, has been subsequently linked with a sixth attempted title defense against past kickboxing foe, Alex Pereira next – after the Brazilian stamped his premier professional title shot with a first round thumping of the #4 ranked, Sean Strickland on the main card.
