MMA’s favorite Czech samurai has decided to usher in his UFC title reign by getting rid of one of his most identifiable characteristics.

Recently crowned UFC light heavyweight champion Ji?í Procházka has shaved off what he previously referred to as his “war hair”. The Czech fighter has gained popularity for his bushido lifestyle and exciting fights, but his unique hairstyle also made him easily recognizable to MMA fans.

The 29-year-old posted a photo of himself on Twitter sitting in a barber’s chair as he shaved off his top knot. When questioned by Ariel Helwani about the decision, Procházka provided an explanation.

“I cut my hair because I needed to end one chapter of my life,” Procházka answered. “So now I can start with new energy, new wave. Honestly.”

Helwani naturally followed up by asking if he intended to grow it back at some point, to which Procházka simply replied, “We will see.”

While he’ll certainly need some time to recover from his battle with Glover Teixeira, the Czech fighter seems to have fully embraced his new role as the UFC’s light heavyweight champion.

Procházka made his MMA debut in 2012 and competed in nearly 30 professional bouts before finally joining the UFC in 2020. “BJP” made an immediate impact on the promotion’s light heavyweight division with second-round knockout victories over former title challengers Volkan Oezdemir and Dominick Reyes.

The 29-year-old’s two stoppage victories were enough to earn a shot at light heavyweight champion Glover Teixieira at UFC 275. The two men went to war in a back-and-forth Fight of The Year candidate that Teixeira seemed set to win before Procházka submitted the Brazilian with less than 30 seconds remaining in the fight.

What’s your reaction to Ji?í Procházka’s decision to start his reign as champion with a new hairstyle?

Chael Sonnen Gives Glover Teixeira A Lesson In Forcing A Rematch

Chael Sonnen believes that recently dethroned UFC light heavyweight Glover Teixeira may have blown his chance to force an immediate rematch against new champion Ji?í Procházka.

This past weekend at UFC 275, Teixeira’s once-unlikely reign came to an end at the hands of “Denisa” in Singapore. But the Brazilian’s removal from the top step of the 205-pound ladder didn’t come without a fight.

The pair went back and forth across a five-round headliner that will certainly be picking up a host of Fight of the Year awards come the end of 2022 and will likely even find a place in the overall discussion of all-time MMA bouts.

After falling to defeat via submission just 28 seconds before he was certain to hear ‘and still’ courtesy of the judges’ scorecards, Teixeira took to Twitter to call for an immediate rematch.

But the manner in which the now-former champion did so, Sonnen says, hasn’t helped his chances.

During a recent video uploaded to his YouTube channel, the former two-division UFC title challenger noted the importance of the 48-hour post-fight period when it comes to fighters making their voices and intentions heard.

According to Sonnen, simply asking Procházka and UFC President Dana White for a rematch online was nowhere near impactful enough from Teixeira.

“A little wind has been taken out of the sail of the idea that Glover Teixeira’s gonna be given an immediate rematch,” suggested Sonnen. “The most that Glover has done to get himself the immediate rematch is he tweeted out the word ‘rematch’ with a question mark… That is the most that he’s done. I must tell you, it’s (rematch claim) not gonna get stronger as days go by. That is not how rematches work. Everything is hot right now. You have exactly 48 hours after a fight, exactly.

“Sunday’s a travel day, there’s no media covering things. Then on Monday… Monday became a big media day for MMA, and they’re not going forward, they’re still going back. When Tuesday rolls around, the news cycle for what’s next is in full effect. So, you only have two days to get this done,” added Sonnen. “You’ve got to build that fire… It’s not the case here. It’s just not. Glover asking for a rematch… That’s not Glover’s strong point.”

Sonnen Questions Teixeira’s Question

Sonnen, who knows a thing or two about rematches having faced Paul Filho twice in WEC and the legendary Anderson Silva twice inside the Octagon, proceeded to give the Brazilian veteran a lesson in the art of persuasion.

According to the 45-year-old, Teixeira should have publicly implied that Procházka ‘owes’ him a rematch after being given the opportunity to win the belt by him in the first place. Sonnen suggested that he’s never seen the use of emotional “leverage” fail.

“I think that Glover should have tried everything in the book, including emotionally leveraging Procházka, ‘I gave you an opportunity. You’re a dude with a weird haircut and a name people can’t pronounce. We were the most unanticipated main event of 2022, but I still gave you the opportunity. You must return that to me,’” Sonnen demonstrated. “I’ve never seen anyone make that argument and have it denied.”

Whether it would have been successful or not, Sonnen has no doubt that it would have proven to be more effective than Teixeira’s tweet, which he branded as “weak” and the reason why an immediate rematch is now unlikely.

“That is every bit as effective as sending out a tweet that says, ‘Rematch?’ The question mark is what screwed that up,” claimed Sonnen. “Any kind of a power position, any kind of toughness, you take away when you put a question mark. Who asks questions? … To me, it’s just a very weak position.

“Question mark? You were the light heavyweight champion of the world 48 hours ago. God’s got seven billion men on this Earth, you were strongest of all of them 48 hours ago. Now you’re asking questions on social media?” Sonnen added. “The rematch is not going to happen, not immediately. You have 48 hours to make those things happen. This is going to be a distant memory.”

One man who’s certainly been more stern in demanding a shot is Teixeira’s fellow former titleholder Jan Blachowicz. While the nature of the Pole’s latest victory would perhaps convince some that he’s yet to earn a chance at title redemption, it hasn’t stopped Blachowicz from staking his claim.

As well as traveling to Singapore for UFC 275, Blachowicz had a heated interaction with the new champ post-fight and pitched an all-European championship collision in post-event interviews and on social media.

The other threat to Teixeira’s rematch hopes is the upcoming fight between top-five contenders Anthony Smith and Magomed Ankalaev. The UFC President hinted last week that the victor will likely challenge for the title next, a belief that was also recently shared by Smith.

Do you agree with Chael Sonnen? Has Glover Teixeira “screwed” his chances of an immediate rematch?

Ji?í Procházka Explains ‘Tapping’ During Teixeira Fight

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Ji?í Procházka has explained his ‘taps’ against Glover Teixeira at UFC 275, admitting he was playing a “dangerous” game. UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Ji?í Procházka has explained his ‘taps’ against Glover Teixeira at UFC 275, admitting he was playing a “dangerous” game.

This past weekend, Procházka capped off a memorable three-fight run inside the Octagon with championship glory. While his fists had done the job in his previous two outings, sending Volkan Oezdemir and Dominick Reyes to sleep, Teixeira was built different in Singapore.

But in a fifth round where a finish was required to prevent the Brazilian retaining the gold, “Denisa” pulled something special out the bag, becoming the first man to submit Teixeira in professional MMA. With his last-gasp win, Procházka etched his name in UFC history as the promotion’s first titleholder from the Czech Republic.

Prior to his arrival on MMA’s biggest stage, Procházka built a reputation as a brutal knockout artist, but also one whose style was unique and somewhat flamboyant inside the cage.

While that was evident in his debut and sophomore appearances, the champ’s third walk to the cage saw him play a self-professed “dangerous” game inside the Octagon.

Throughout the memorable main event, “Denisa” found himself on his back and eating vicious elbows. Like the madman he is, the 29-year-old often responded by smiling and encouraging Teixeira to give him more. One way he did that was by playfully tapping the Brazilian on the back.

With many highlighting the taps on social media post-fight, Procházka sought to explain them during an appearance on The MMA Hour. While most, including referee Marc Goddard, acknowledged the faux nature of the patting, “Denisa” is aware of the risks and seemingly won’t be replicating them in future fights.

“I did that because I tried to push him, like to push him to give me more, give me more, show me more,” said Procházka. “Because I tried to make him (make) some action, and I wait for that action to do some (techniques) to reverse it. And that’s why I do I did that. Not for tapping, just for a strategy, but it was very dangerous. Now I realized that.

“Maybe (I’ll do it again), but not in the same (way), like with the same moves. Not with tapping.” (h/t MMA Fighting)

Had Goddard not been more aware, perhaps we’d have had a Magomed Ankalaev vs. Ion Cu?elaba 1 situation on our hands…

Do you think Ji?í Procházka was playing a risky game by tapping Glover Teixeira at UFC 275?

Newly-crowned UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Ji?í Procházka has a few options for his first defense, but it seems that one opponent and location is sticking out.

This past weekend at UFC 275, the 15th 205-pound titleholder in UFC history was crowned, and the first to originate from the Czech Republic. In three Octagon outings, Procházka has ascended to the top on MMA’s biggest stage, but it certainly wasn’t an easy ride.

Entering the final minute of a memorable main event, Glover Teixeira was on his way to a successful victory and defense on the scorecards. But after reversing position on the ground, “Denisa” locked in a rear-naked choke, forcing the Brazilian to tap with just 28 seconds remaining.

Now, having delivered one of the greatest fights in UFC history and brought the gold back to his home country, Procházka is looking ahead to what’s next, and if his dreams come to fruition, it could include a home defense.

There are seemingly three options in the light heavyweight title picture: a rematch with Teixeira, the victor of UFC 277’s Anthony Smith vs. Magomed Ankalaev fight, and former champion Jan Blachowicz.

During an appearance on The MMA Hour, Procházka shared a similar sentiment to Blachowicz when revealing his preference, suggesting that a clash with the Polish star in their home continent would be the “biggest event” in European MMA history.

“First, I don’t know what’s the preference of the UFC, the organization. I want to communicate more with the UFC, what they want from me,” noted Procházka. “That I want to talk to them about. The second thing, I think the most dangerous man here in the light heavyweight division under me, there is Jan Blachowicz. He can be the next challenger (for) me.

“Man, that’s something that I’m thinking about. I think for Europe, that will be the biggest event ever, (in) the martial arts,” added Procházka. “Me and him, Poland and Czech Republic, they are next to (each other). I will be ready, and I will win. Doesn’t matter, whatever it takes.”

The MMA leader visited the Czech Republic for the first time in 2019. The card saw a collision between Jan Blachowicz and Thiago Santos in the main event, and took place at the O2 Arena in Prague, the Czech capital.

While that could be an option, Blachowicz has also suggested that the pair could sell out a stadium in Poland ahead of a potential championship showdown.

Procházka: I Have To Respect Teixeira

However, while it seems clear that the champion has his preference, he also acknowledged the place of now-former light heavyweight king Teixeira in the division.

The Brazilian certainly played his part in the certain Fight of the Year contender in Singapore on Saturday, and was just seconds away from retaining the belt on the scorecards. With that in mind, and having committed himself to pursuit of two-time champ status, Teixeira called for an immediate rematch, something that “Denisa” knows he has to “respect.”

“But still, I have to keep respect for Glover. So one thing is to offer Glover the rematch, and the second thing is to fight Jan Blachowicz,” said Procházka. “I have to make a decision in that. I have to talk with the UFC and my manager about what will be the best step.”

The debate has certainly drew opinions. While Smith has suggested that Blachowicz has no business in the title picture given the injury that led to his victory over Aleksandar Raki?, former UFC star Chael Sonnen believes that Teixeira has blown his chance of an immediate rematch through a “weak” post-fight strategy.

And with UFC President Dana White suggesting that the Smith vs. Ankalaev winner will likely be number one contender, perhaps the Brazilian and the Pole will be left out in the cold. Only time will tell.

Jon Jones took the time to congratulate newly-crowned UFC light heavyweight champion, Ji?í Procházka, for his win over Glover Teixeira.

Procházka defeated Teixeira in an instant classic matchup in the UFC 275 headliner this last weekend. With seconds left in the fight, Procházka got Teixeira’s back and was able to sink in a rear-naked choke to win the title.

Despite vacating his title after a win over Dominick Reyes at UFC 247, Jones remains a massive part of the light heavyweight division’s history. In a recent tweet, he congratulated Procházka for his performance.

“Congratulations Champ,” Jones tweeted to Procházka.

Procházka earned the title shot after back-to-back knockouts over Volkan Oezdemir and Reyes in the UFC. He signed with the UFC back in 2020 following a championship tenure in RIZIN.

Jones is preparing for a move to heavyweight later this year, potentially against former champion Stipe Miocic. He has been sidelined since his win over Reyes to build his body up for his heavyweight move, and also to deal with recent legal issues.

Procházka earned a series of impressive wins in RIZIN, including reigning PFL heavyweight champion Bruno Cappelozza and Muhammed Lawal. He defeated C.B. Dollaway for the RIZIN light heavyweight title at RIZIN 20 before making the move to the Octagon.

Procházka is expected to face former champion Jan Blachowicz next but could potentially face Teixeira in an immediate rematch.

Who do you think would win in a light heavyweight bout between Jon Jones and Ji?í Procházka?

Newly crowned UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Ji?í Procházka is looking to make up for some past mistakes with his post-UFC 275 celebrations.

In this past weekend’s main event, Procházka and Glover Teixeira delivered a headliner worthy of marking the first pay-per-view event to be held in Southeast Asia. Inside the Singapore Indoor Stadium, the pair went to war for the best part of five rounds, leaving absolutely everything inside the steel surroundings of the Octagon.

After a back-and-forth 24 minutes of wild and enthralling action, Procházka secured his place in UFC history, beating the Brazilian at his own game with a last-ditch rear-naked choke. Having been 28 seconds away from defeat, “Denisa” ensured that he’d be leaving Singapore one championship belt heavier and as the Czech Republic’s first UFC titleholder.

That’s certainly cause for celebration, right? Well, pre-UFC 275, Procházka wouldn’t have agreed. As it turns out, the 29-year-old hasn’t been hitting the town post-fight so far in the UFC. That’s despite recording a main event victory over Dominick Reyes via spinning back elbow last May.

Instead, Procházka focused his attention back to fight preparation straight away, something he’s identified as one of his mistakes leading into his championship challenge.

During the UFC 275 post-fight press conference, the 205-pound king discussed his party plans post-title win. The Czech star admitted that toning down his celebrations in the past has been an error, and hinted that it likely contributed towards what he perceives to have been a disappointing performance versus Teixeira.

“I’m conferring with my friends. We want to take a boat, some ship, and to celebrate it somewhere on the sea and just enjoy the time,” said Procházka. “Because after my last fight with Dominick [Reyes], I didn’t celebrate enough. And I think that was the mistake for the next fight, for the next preparation.

“Because you have to train a lot, fight a lot, and then celebrate a lot. Because it’s a very important part because you have to give everything for your celebration to show yourself how important (this is), and it is important. I’m looking forward (to) that,” concluded Procházka.

The champ has always had an incredibly focused aura around him, something that was even evident in the criticism of his own performance during his Octagon interview. But nevertheless, it seems that “Denisa” is looking to let his hair down for a period, before he begins preparation for his first title defense.

And it’s safe to say that he deserves some downtime after playing his part in one of the all-time great UFC title fights.

Do you think it’s important for fighters like Ji?í Procházka to celebrate their victories?
