Former UFC strawweight champion Jessica Andrade feels Weili Zhang would get the better of Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Back in August, Zhang stopped Andrade in under a minute to capture the 115-pound gold. While her first title defense hasn’t been made official, many believe that Joanna Jedrzejczyk could be a lead candidate. A former UFC strawweight champion […]

Weili Zhang is the new face of the UFC’s 115-pound division, and may already have her first title defense lined up. Ex-division queen, Joanna Jedrzejczyk, comes off a big win over Michelle Waterson in Tampa, Florida.

With the win, Jedrzejczyk has been promised a title shot next. Despite Zhang saying she has no interest in fighting Jedrzejczyk, the fight may be inevitable. Zhang captured the 115-pound crown by taking out former champion Jessica Andrade in the first round this past August.

Speaking to MMA Fighting recently, Andrade, who has felt first-hand what both Jedrzejczyk and Zhang are capable of, gave her prediction for how a fight between the pair would go down. Andrade said she doesn’t think Jedrzejczyk will be able to handle the power and pressure Zhang brings to the table.

“A fight with Joanna would be very interesting,” Andrade said. “Joanna is one of the best in the division, and she has evolved a lot, as we saw in her last fight. Weili Zhang is very strong, is really fast on the feet, so I it would be really interesting.

“It’s a hard one to predict who would win, but I’d bet on Weili Zhang. I think she would continue to reign, because of her strength. Even though she’s not the type of fighter that goes for takedowns and prefers to stay on the feet, she’s very strong and kicks really hard – something Joanna doesn’t handle that well.”

Jedrzejczyk is on a two-fight win streak at strawweight and presents an interesting stylistic matchup for the new champion. She’s easily the best striker Zhang would have ever shared the cage with, but Zhang presents a whole new meaning of power and pressure in the 115-pound weight division. A fight between the pair would surely be nothing short of exceptional.

What do you think about Jedrzejczyk’s chances against Zhang?

Joanna Jedrzejczyk believes she will eventually return to flyweight — however, her goal for now is to become the strawweight champion once again.

Jedrzejczyk is the longest-reigning strawweight champion in UFC history but recently suffered a skid, having lost her title to Rose Namajunas in 2017. She would get outpointed in the rematch before getting back to winning ways against Tecia Torres. However, she would then lose to Valentina Shevchenko for the vacant flyweight title.

The former champion returned to her weight class last month when she outpointed Michelle Waterson in their UFC Tampa headliner. There were initial scares about her missing weight, but in the end, it turned out to be no problem for Jedrzejczyk:

“I’m a professional – I didn’t want to screw the show,” Jedrzejczyk told MMA Fighting. “The thing is, I just let the UFC know that my weight went up for no reason, because I was super light in the middle of all this. I got some help from the UFC Performance Institute – big shout out to Clint [Wattenburg], who took care of my weight cutting and nutrition for the last two weeks before the fight.

“I got good support. I got the right kind food from them. It makes it so much easier for a fighter’s life. I thought of the weight cut because we needed to save this card. I need to fight, so I was thinking of a catchweight, but everything ended up good. I was not even close to missing weight.”

Jedrzejczyk has had trouble with the weight cut in the past as well which is why many have called for her to permanently move up to 125 pounds. It’s something she plans on doing in the future but she wants to reclaim UFC strawweight gold first:

“Yes of course [I’ll return to flyweight], but right now we’re at strawweight, and I want to be the champ one more time my life,” Jedrzejczyk added. “I want to be strawweight champ again.

“The weight cut went smooth and easy, and I’m very excited to step into the Octagon with Weili Zhang. I’m super excited about that.”

Do you think Jedrzejczyk will become a champion again?

Joanna Jedrzejczyk has been very impressed with new UFC 115-pound champion Weili Zhang. However, it sounds like the feeling isn’t mutual.

Jedrzejczyk comes off a decision victory over Michelle Waterson at UFC Tampa, and was promised a title opportunity against Zhang should she get the victory. Now, in an interview with TMZ, Zhang explains that she’s not very interested in a fight with Jedrzejczyk, claiming the Polish striker isn’t the fighter she used to be. (H/T MMA Junkie)

“Joanna – I don’t think she’s the fighter she used to be,” Zhang said. “She’s nothing conditional to what she used to be. I’m not very interested.”

Instead, Zhang is more interested in fighting Rose Namajunas, who the Chinese champion calls the “best” as opposed to Jedrzejczyk.

“Definitely, she needs me more than I need her, and she’s struggling in the division to fight me. But I don’t know if I will give her the chance,” Zhang said. “I want to fight the best. I think maybe Rose (Namajunas) is also a good choice.”

Although Zhang has not yet successfully defended her strawweight title, she also expressed interest in jumping up to 125 pounds and challenging flyweight queen Valentina Shevchenko.

“If I had the chance, I’d like to move up to the weight class and fight the best, and right now Valentina is one of the best,” Zhang said.

What do you think about Zhang’s comments towards Jedrzejczyk?
