Former women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk could have the chance to regain her title soon.

Jedrzejczyk meets fellow contender Michelle Waterson in the UFC Tampa headliner which takes place October 12. The winner of the bout could stake a claim at the next title shot against Weili Zhang.

However, Jedrzejczyk claims victory over Waterson will land her the next crack at the title and it’s even written in her fight contract:

“We have in the contract that the win will get a duel of the strawweight category,” Jedrzejczyk said to a Polish outlet (translation via BJ Penn). “The fight for the title is closer than we think.

After the victory with Michelle on October 12, I hope that in the first quarter of 2020 I will get a chance to return to the throne.”

It’s not clear if the same applies if Waterson wins, but for Jedrzejczyk, it’s another chance to become a two-time strawweight champion. The 32-year-old ruled over the division from 2015 to 2017 until she was knocked out by Rose Namajunas.

She would lose to Namajunas again in their rematch via unanimous decision before getting back to winning ways against Tecia Torres. Another attempt at UFC gold failed when she was outpointed by Valentina Shevchenko for the vacant flyweight title last year.

However, she will now look to establish a winning run and get back the title that was synonymous with her name.

Do you think Jedrzejczyk will get the job done at UFC Tampa?

Jessica Andrade has been on an absolute tear through the UFC’s 115-pound division, and she capped it off by winning the division’s title her last time out in May.

Andrade provided one of the most shocking UFC title fight finishes in recent memory, dethroning Rose Namajunas with a slam KO in the second round of their contest in Brazil. The victory extended Andrade’s win streak to four fights and also marked her second consecutive knockout victory. Now, Andrade prepares for her first title defense against No. 6-ranked Weili Zhang this weekend in China.

The matchup received a bit of criticism amidst its announcement, as Zhang has only had three fights under the UFC’s banner. Speaking to LowKickMMA, Andrade offered her take on the situation.

“When I first heard about this fight, I didn’t know how she was ranked, but when I got into this division, I also had three fights, three wins and had a chance for the title, so I believe that she has earned this opportunity. Also, all the other possible opponents already had bouts scheduled or were injured, so we didn’t have many options.

“It was either Weili Zhang or waiting for Tatiana Suarez to recover or Nina Ansaroff to win another fight, or Joanna to win a few fights or Claudia Gadelha… So it was going to take a long time to defend the belt and when I won I said I wanted to be an active champion, defend my belt many times, take all the opportunities UFC offers us, so I accepted right away to face Zhang.”

Although she didn’t know where Zhang was ranked before accepting the fight, she was familiar with the Chinese star, who came into the UFC as one of the top female prospects in mixed martial arts (MMA).

“Yes, I didn’t know how she was ranked, but I knew her. It will be a tough fight, she is a tough opponent and I think she has earned this shot.”

Andrade’s last time out was her title win over Namajunas at UFC 237. It was one of the strangest title victories the promotion has ever seen given Namajunas was seemingly dominating the fight on the feet, before being knocked unconscious with the slam from Andrade.

While everything was happening, the Brazilian wasn’t sure if she had won the fight or been disqualified.

“At the time, I didn’t know if I had been disqualified, if the slam would be allowed, if anything happened to her… but I had done this many times in my other fights. I did it with Claudia, did it with Joanna, so I didn’t imagine that the fight would end like that. Now I know this is another weapon I have coming into my fights.”

Andrade is on a four-fight win streak over the likes of Cláudia Gadelha, Tecia Torres, Karolina Kowalkiewicz, and Namajunas. At 27-years-old, the champion has looked to be in, arguably, the best form of her career. She hasn’t lost since being outclassed by Joanna J?drzejczyk in her first career title opportunity back in May of 2017.

Now, with two more years of experience under her belt, and a UFC title on her resume, Andrade believes a rematch with J?drzejczyk is still to come if the Polish striker can put together a few more wins. If that day comes, Andrade vows her former rival will feel just how much she has evolved after feeling her first punch.

“I think I have matured a lot since my fight with Joanna, my weight cut is better, my trainings are as well. For the fight against Rose and this one against Zhang, I didn’t take any time off, just kept training, in shape, so I think a lot has changed since my fight with Joanna.

“I have evolved; I think more about every move I make, so if we had a chance to run it back, everyone would see a totally different Jessica. I have more weapons and now I step in much more prepared. I know that Joanna has been talking about me, saying she is anxious to see my fight, so I think a rematch would go completely different.

“I think she still has to win two or more fights to have the opportunity to face me again, but once she does, she will see a new Jessica. When she feels my punch, she will see how much I have changed.”

What do you think about a potential rematch between Andrade and Jedrzejczyk down the road?

Joanna Jedrzejczyk will return to her old stomping grounds at 115 pounds after a failed flyweight title bid.

Jedrzejczyk is set to face Michelle Waterson at UFC on ESPN+ 19. The action goes down from the Chase Center in San Francisco, California on October 12. The Polish striker has lost three of her last four fights. She was previously undefeated with a record of 14-0 and five successful strawweight title defenses under her belt.

However, her reign came to an end against Rose Namajunas in November of 2017 via first-round TKO. She was unable to regain the title in their rematch several months later, as she was outclassed by “Thug” after five rounds. Jedrzejczyk got back into the win column with a decision win over Tecia Torres in July of last year.

This past December, Jedrzejczyk faced former Muay Thai opponent Valentina Shevchenko for the vacant women’s flyweight title. Unfortunately for her, she was bested via unanimous decision. Now, Jedrzejczyk will return to strawweight to take on Waterson. According to American Top Team (ATT) owner Dan Lambert, speaking to BJPenn.com, Jedrzejczyk has been promised a strawweight title shot with a win over “The Karate Hottie.”

“I guess I’ll tell you after camp and how the weight cut went. She has the best chance to get a title shot at Strawweight. The UFC told her with a win she gets a title shot. I’m happy to see here have a clear path to get a title shot,” Lambert said. “With no clear path, she was not going to rush back. I’m happy to see her back training.”

Getting past Waterson will be no easy task. She is one of the best strikers in the division and has a slick ground game as well. Waterson is on a three-fight win streak over names such as Cortney Casey, Felice Herrig, and Karolina Kowalkiewicz. With a win over Jedrzejczyk, Waterson could be looking at a title opportunity herself.

What do you think about Jedrzejczyk being promised a title shot with a win over Waterson?

UFC women’s strawweight champion Jessica Andrade is no stranger to trash talk from Joanna Jedrzejczyk or Claudia Gadelha.

Ever since becoming champion, Andrade has been on the receiving end of some criticism from the two. Jedrzejczyk, who outpointed Andrade in their 2017 title fight, wasn’t impressed with the Brazilian’s training videos on social media. Gadelha, meanwhile, who suffered a unanimous decision loss to Andrade in 2017, has been questioning why the latter is fighting at strawweight, considering her strength advantage.

For Andrade, their comments are just a result of jealousy:

“I’m already used to having (Gadelha) and Joanna talking a bunch of stuff, but it’s jealousy because I won the belt and they haven’t,” Andrade said recently (via MMA Fighting). “They want attention and I won’t give them any attention. They have to fight and show who deserves to fight for the belt. I had to fight three times and earn the opportunity to fight for the belt again, so they have to do the same.

“Claudia Gadelha had so many opportunities to win the belt against Joanna, I had one—and I believe that down the line, with Joanna winning, we’ll have a rematch. That Jessica from two, three years ago is not the same anymore. I believe I’ll keep this belt for a long time.”

Andrade On Criticism

Andrade believes Jedrzejczyk — who faces Michelle Waterson next — is trying to get a title shot by provoking her into a rematch:

“She wants attention, she wants to talk me into asking for this fight before it’s time,” Andrade explained. “She has to eat more rice and beans, has to get there and earn her chance. There are others ahead of her.”

As for Gadelha’s comments, Andrade had a simple response:

“Making weight is what matters, not the strength,” Andrade added. “But it’s all good. If she gets more wins like I did to earn another opportunity to fight for the belt, why not? I’d fight her again.”

What do you make of the criticism/trash talk Andrade is receiving?
