Following her second straight loss to Zhang Weili at UFC 275, former strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk called it a career, leaving her gloves in the Octagon and officially announcing her retirement from the sport.

“I’m retired guys. I love you so much, thank you for this opportunity,” Jedrzejczyk said in her post-fight interview.

One month removed from her retirement, ‘Joanna Violence’ is already talking about a potential return to the Octagon. In an interview with MMA Fighting, Jedrzejczyk discussed taking part in a women’s ‘BMF’ title fight.

“Maybe I could come back for the female ‘BMF’ title,” Jedrzejczyk said. “Look, I’m retired. I am retired, but in the future, maybe I would fight for the ‘BFMF’ [belt]. I don’t know [who I would fight], there’s not that many ‘BFMF,’ real O.G. female fighters left.”

Joanna Jedrzejczyk Plans to Continue Working With The UFC

Still getting used to the idea of being retired, Joanna Jedrzejczyk doesn’t plan to stray far from the UFC. While she hasn’t had the opportunity to sit down with UFC president Dana White, the Olsztyn, Poland native hopes to continue working with the promotion in some capacity.

“After Singapore, I got back home for six nights only. After my fight, I went to Europe for six days, then [Las Vegas] for three days, so I haven’t had time to sit and think about my retirement and my life in general. I’m happy, but it’s still hard. It’s hard for me to digest,” Jedrzejczyk said.

“I want to stick with the UFC. I’m looking forward to sitting down with Dana White to talk about my future, what I could possibly do for the UFC and the fans because there’s no sport without fans — any sport — and I’m very happy to be [at events], be around the fans, and I definitely see myself doing something with the UFC — broadcasting, commentating, just being around.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk became the promotion’s first Polish world champion when she defeated Carla Esparza at UFC 185 in 2015. She would go on to successfully defend the title five times. She ended her career as a mixed martial artist with a record of 16-5-0.

Former UFC strawweight champion Joanna J?drzejczyk has spoken out for the first time since her post-UFC 275 retirement announcement.

J?drzejczyk announced that she was hanging up the gloves just minutes after her knockout loss to Zhang Weili at UFC 275. She made her return to the Octagon after a two-year hiatus since her first matchup with Weili.

J?drzejczyk is arguably one of the greatest female fighters in the sport’s history and her retirement came as a shock almost universally amongst fans and pundits.

During a recent interview with MMA Fighting, J?drzejczyk opened up about the thought process that came with deciding to retire.

“It is [done], for now it is,” Jedrzejczyk said. “I always promised myself if I leave this sport, I will leave it forever. It’s hard but sometimes I wake up and in the morning I’m like I would love to be back. Why am I doing this? That’s the hard part. For now, I’m done. I’m very happy.

“I’m flying to Vegas tomorrow, I hope I will sit and talk to Dana [White] and [American Top Team owner] Dan Lambert as well,” J?drzejczyk continued. “I’m really looking forward to seeing all of them and talk to all of them and talk about the future a little bit. I need to stick to my decision because there is so many things which are making me go more into this sport and even keep on fighting but like I said, health is most important. I’m not having any issues like I’m hiding something. I’m not having any issues.”

J?drzejczyk challenged for the strawweight title against Carla Esparza at UFC 185. After earning the belt, she went on to defend the title five times before suffering back-to-back losses to Rose Namajunas.

While J?drzejczyk will almost certainly miss competition, she seems set in her decision to walk away and move on to new challenges.

At UFC 185, J?drzejczyk captured the UFC strawweight championship, defeating then and current champion Carla Esparza by second-round TKO. The win made J?drzejczyk the first Polish-born fighter to become a UFC champion. Fellow countryman and friend Mateusz Gamrot was successful in his UFC Vegas 57 main event against Arman Tsarukyan on Saturday.

Following his victory, Gamrot spoke about his friendship with Joanna J?drzejczyk during the post-fight press conference.

“Joanna is my really good friend,” said Gamrot. “She helped me a lot when I signed a contract with UFC. She helped me a lot every single day. She gave me a lot of motivation and now I am so happy that she’s going to retire because I think she deserves that. She deserves everything beautiful in life.”

Debuting in 2014, J?drzejczyk won back-to-back bouts against Juliana Lima and Claudia Gadelha to secure a title opportunity against Esparza. J?drzejczyk would go on to defend her title five times before losing to ‘Thug’ Rose Namajunas at UFC 217.

Gamrot calls Joanna J?drzejczyk a ‘True Warrior’

“She was a superstar in the UFC for many years,” said Gamrot. “She was five, six times in the world champions. She did everything in the UFC, but she’s a true warrior. She’s a true fighter, she’s strong mentally, but I wish her all the best in life. Doesn’t matter what she wants to do in life, I’ll keep my fingers [crossed] and for sure, I’m gonna support her.”

J?drzejczyk would go on to lose five of her last seven bouts, though the losses came against some seriously tough competition in Namajunas, Zhang, and current flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko. At UFC 248, J?drzejczyk faced Zhang in a bout that many pundits believe is the greatest women’s mixed martial arts fight of all time. Zhang would win via a closely contested split decision.

Following the loss at UFC 275, J?drzejczyk announced her retirement while speaking with Daniel Cormier.

“Guys, I love life so much,” Jedrzejczyk said. “I’m retired, guys. I love you so much. Thank you for the support.”

Reigning PFL light heavyweight champion Antonio Carlos Junior thinks his teammate, Joanna J?drzejczyk shouldn’t hang up the gloves.

J?drzejczyk announced her retirement following a knockout loss to Zhang Weili at UFC 275 this past weekend. She returned to the cage following a two-year layoff which began after her first loss to Weili in an instant classic in March 2020.

But Carlos Junior believes J?drzejczyk is leaving the fight game at a time when she still has a lot left in the tank.

During an exclusive interview with MMA News, Carlos Junior gave his thoughts on J?drzejczyk’s surprise retirement announcement.

“She’s very nice, I love her,” Carlos Junior said of “Everything she’s done for this sport. She’s really great and got the belt, kept it for so long. Very aggressive fighter. But I just wish her all the best in this new chapter of her life. I don’t see her stopping fighting. I see her in the training, she’s so good, I think she has a lot more to show. We always have to make some choices along in life and if she thinks it’s the best time for her, I’m always cheering for her.”

In her prime, J?drzejczyk was considered arguably one of the most electric champions in UFC history. She defended her strawweight title five-straight times after winning the belt against Carla Esparza at UFC 185.

J?drzejczyk seems content in her decision to retire, but Carlos Junior feels she has a lot more to give to the sport. She’s hinted at sticking around the sport for years to come, potentially as a manager for fighters.

As for Carlos Junior, he’s slated to return tonight at PFL 4 against Bruce Souto. He won the title in his first season with the league in 2021 following an up-and-down stay in the UFC.
