Unlike majority of Conor McGregor’s wins, head coach John Kavanagh is expecting a late finish in two weeks time.

McGregor returns to action for the first time in 15 months when he faces Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 on January 18. It will notably be a welterweight bout so the Irishman does not need to worry about the weight cut.

Those extra 15 pounds could play a factor as Kavanagh believes McGregor will get the win in the championship rounds compared to an early stoppage.

“I think it’s going to be late,” Kavanagh told The Mac Life. “I think it’s going to be late. I could see it in the championship rounds. That’s the mindset that I personally have and I have to be ready for that.

“Now, he could go and spark him in seconds but I think there’s a little extra weight involved, so I think in the later rounds.”

Given McGregor’s only win at welterweight went the full 25 minutes, it is certainly a possibility. It will certainly be interesting to see how the Irishman fares with the extra weight in what will be his first 170-pound contest since August 2016.

Do you agree with Kavanagh’s prediction?

Conor McGregor’s return to the Octagon is nearing, and as always, longtime head coach John Kavanagh will be in his corner.

As training camp winds down and fight night inches closer, Kavanagh recently took to Twitter to provide an update on his fighter. Kavanagh claims he’s traveling to Vegas with McGregor soon after wrapping up their last day of sparring, and also threw in that “Notorious” looks to be the “best I’ve seen him.” Something he didn’t think possible six months ago.

“Jan 1st, last heavy spar today before going to Vegas. Can honestly say this is the best i’ve seen him and i wasn’t sure that was possible to do 6 months ago. You guys are in for a real treat, i’m just glad to have a good seat!”

McGregor will headline UFC 246 on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 18. There, he jumps up to welterweight yet again to face off against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.

UFC president Dana White has described the contest as a lightweight fight in which neither man is cutting weight. If McGregor emerges victorious, the UFC boss has heavily pushed that McGregor is next in line for the 155-pound title, setting up a rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

What are you expecting from McGregor in his return later this month?

All signs are pointing to Conor McGregor finally making his return to the Octagon in January as he teased. McGregor said during a media tour in Russia that he will fight again on January 18 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Even UFC president Dana White noted, although nothing is even close to official just yet, they are, in fact, looking to book McGregor vs. Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone for January 18. ESPN’s Ariel Helwani caught up with McGregor’s longtime head coach, John Kavanagh, to get his comments on the situation. Kavanagh divulged that all parties involved have “more or less” come to an agreement on the fight.

“Yeah, like Dana said, nothing is 100 percent until all contracts are signed,” Kavanagh said. “As far as I’m aware, all parties have agreed more or less, in principle, maybe just a few kinks to be ironed out. But as far as I’m aware, hopefully, an announcement is imminent.”

Cerrone even teased that the fight is in the works with a recent post online. In a follow-up interview, “Cowboy” urged the Irishman to make things official and sign the contract.

“Sign the damn deal, man. Let’s get this done.”

What do you think about Kavanagh teasing McGregor’s “imminent” fight announcement?

Conor McGregor has been gunning for a rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov since his October loss to the Russian champ last year.

McGregor made his highly-anticipated return to the UFC at UFC 229, when he headlined the Las Vegas show against Nurmagomedov. In the fourth round, McGregor submitted to a neck crank. Its been a year since that fight took place, and along with attempts to put his legal issues aside, McGregor is on the hunt for an opponent to return to the cage. Ideally, he’d like a rematch with Nurmagomedov.

However, the Khabib camp doesn’t believe the Irishman is deserving of the opportunity. Recently, Nurmagomedov’s father, Abdulmanap, suggested such a fight would have to take place in home territory for Khabib in Russia.

“If McGregor wants it, then Moscow is waiting for him. He said once that he has more fans here than Khabib,” Abdulmanap said. “We want to host him in Moscow, he is welcome – we are waiting.”

While Abdulmanap is open to the fight, he acknowledges that Tony Ferguson is the more deserving candidate to face his son next, and believes a bout against “El Cucuy” in March is the fight to make.

“Before McGregor we should finish our business with Ferguson,” Abdulmanap stated. “Because he had 28 fights, and runs a 12-fight winning streak in the UFC, just like Khabib. Such winning streaks and such big fights have never happened in the UFC.

“So I think Madison Square Garden is a good place for this fight, but we won’t fight earlier than March.”

Recently, McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh, took to Twitter, seemingly accepting Abdulmanap’s challenge for McGregor to fight Khabib in Russia.

What do you think about Kavanagh’s response to Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov?
