Conor McGregor, John Kavanagh

SBG Ireland headman John Kavanagh isn’t losing sleep over calls for him to be terminated following UFC star Conor McGregor’s recent struggles.

Kavanagh has most recently been the target of UFC commentator and former fighter Michael Bisping, who called for Kavanagh to be let go by McGregor’s inner circle.

It all started when Kavanagh seemed more jovial than many believed he should’ve been after McGregor suffered a TKO loss via doctor’s stoppage to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. Bisping went as far as to say that Kavanagh should be “fired immediately” after his reaction.

During a recent interview with The Mirror, Kavanagh responded to Bisping’s comments along with overall calls for him to step aside as McGregor’s coach.

“I wouldn’t say I was hurt, I wasn’t going, ‘Oh, no, Bisping said something’, that’s his opinion and everybody is welcome to their opinion,” Kavanagh said. “I’m always self-critical but if I’m being 100 percent honest, it’ll be the people closest to me saying something – I have a lot of very honest people around me – that’ll be what makes me really stand up and think.

“So look, things are looking up and to Bisping I’d say ‘thanks very much for the constructive criticism’, keep it coming and we’ll keep trying to improve.”

Kavanagh also feels that Bisping’s remarks are an example of a larger pattern of SBG Ireland being held to a different standard because of McGregor’s fame.

“So we’re judged under a different set of rules to everybody else, and that’s fine because we also get a lot of benefits from the 2,000lb gorilla that is Conor,” Kavanagh said.

“We get a lot of attention here, lots of great opportunities, my fight team gets to be involved with big shows.

Conor McGregor, John Kavanagh Have Worked Together For Years

McGregor has been at SBG Ireland with Kavanagh since before he became one of the UFC’s biggest superstars. His time with the gym stems from his title wins in Cage Warriors before ultimately making the move to the UFC.

McGregor hasn’t won in the Octagon since his first-round finish over Donald Cerrone at UFC 246. He has lost three of his last four fights overall, with defeats to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Poirier(2).

As of now, it seems like McGregor doesn’t have any plans to move away from his roots with Kavanagh and SBG Ireland. As he gets ready to make his UFC return in 2022, he’ll look to get back in the win column with Kavanagh in his corner.

Conor McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh has responded to former UFC champion, Michael Bisping calling for him to be fired after ‘Notorious’ suffered back-to-back losses to Dustin Poirier.

Following McGregor’s second loss to Poirier this year, Kavanagh came under intense criticism for his evaluation of McGregor’s performance. Kavanagh stated that he had no concern over the first round which saw two of the three judges score a 10-8 round for Poirier.

“It was going fantastic. I thought he looked really, really good in there,” Kavanagh said. “I wasn’t concerned at all. I was actually really, really happy. At the 4:30 mark or even the 4:45 mark, everything is gravy. I thought the energy looked good, technique looked good. A few adjustments in between rounds and I thought in round two we were well on track to possibly getting a finish or at least to keep the rhythm going for the rest of the fight.”

In an interview with BT Sport, Bisping would slam Kavanagh over his comments, “just like his coach John Kavanagh has, he said, ‘oh, I saw nothing that concerned me. I knew that in the second round we would get the knockout. Nothing I was seeing there concerned me at all.’ If that’s true, John Kavanagh, Conor should fire you immediately because that was very concerning. You were on your back and you were getting dominated. It was a 10-8 round. That’s concerning! You don’t want to get your ass kicked, simple as that, and that’s what was happening.”

Conor McGregor’s Coach Listens To The Critics

In a response to the call for him to be fired, Kavanagh told The Mirror, “I would take criticism from anybody, that’s very important. I wouldn’t say I was hurt, I wasn’t going, ‘Oh no Bisping said something’, that’s his opinion and everybody is welcome to their opinion.

“I‘m always self-critical but if I’m being 100 percent honest, it’ll be the people closest to me saying something,” Kavanagh continued. “I have a lot of very honest people around me – that’ll be what makes me really stand up and think.”

Kavanagh also explained that although his star pupil in McGregor, didn’t have the best 2021 his gym, SBG Ireland continues to be successful. “For this quarter that’s just ending we had a 70 percent win rate” Kavanagh explained, “20 fighters and 14 wins and that’s going to be right up there with some of the best gyms in the world. Our biggest star [McGregor] obviously overshadows everything we do and if he slips then people say the whole gym is terrible.”

We could be seeing Conor McGregor back in the Octagon sooner than we thought.

According to John Kavanagh, McGregor’s long-time head coach, ‘Notorious’ is on a solid and stable road to recovery from the detrimental leg injury he suffered at the hands of Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 264

John Kavanagh provides update on Conor McGregor’s condition:

“We’re not back to MMA training yet, but he can do all the strength and conditioning, and he’s being sensible about the approach of it,” Kavanagh told MMA Junkie. “I do a little bit of talks at local schools in Dublin, and I will always use him as an example of what we can do in life when we get setbacks. There’s nobody that comes back better than him. There’s nobody that uses losses to fuel themself to learn new things about their body, to learn new things about training, and come back and do very well.”

It’s fair to say that McGregor has kept himself firmly in the headlines since his injury, calling out several fighters ranging across a whole spectrum of divisions, as well as getting into it with Machine Gun Kelly at the MTV awards earlier this year.

Amongst those many fighters to have called McGregor out, the former champ only seems interested in an unlikely return to the title picture, calling out current lightweight champion Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira, who defended his title for the first time with a fantastic third round submission of Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier at UFC 269.

Irrespective of who the opponent standing across the cage from Conor McGregor when he makes his return, Kavanagh is confident that his return will be a strong one.

“He has his wins, he has his losses, but he’s never going to quit,” Kavanagh said about McGregor’s perseverance and persistency. “He always picks himself back up again and goes back in. That’s really, for me, is what life’s all about. We’re all going to have failures; we’re all going to have setbacks.”

As for when fans can expect Conor McGregor back in the Octagon?

“I would say early summer,” Kavanagh said. “I think he’s on target for that. I’ll be meeting him, he’s back in Dublin now, so I’ll see him when I go back home to Ireland. I’m sure we’ll have a Proper 12 to celebrate Christmas, and then set a time for making a comeback.”

John Kavanagh and Conor McGregor are planning a comeback but against who?

Conor McGregor is currently sidelined with a leg injury. Although his timeline for return is not yet specified, he is still talking about his plan of attack. McGregor has stated that he would like to fight for the belt when he is ready to get back in the cage.

However, his head coach John Kavanagh might have some more realistic ideas. Kavanagh sat down with Ariel Helwani of The MMA Hour to discuss options (h/t MMA Fighting).

“I’ll be honest, the Nate Diaz trilogy is very, very tempting,” Kavanagh said. “It’s a fight that gives me nightmares. The man doesn’t stop coming forward, whether it’s three rounds or five rounds, but it’s an intriguing fight. So that one is definitely very interesting. But also the Tony Ferguson one — it never happened. It was talked about a lot. And Tony still has, I believe, a lot to offer the game. He’s a very unorthodox striker, grappler. I think the buildup would be fun for the fans. So any of those kind of legacy guys.”

McGregor is the most wanted fighter on the UFc roster. He is constantly being called out by fighters, both in his division and out. He will most likely have his choice of who he wants to fight when he is ready. The only exception could be whoever is holding the belt when that time comes.

Champion Charles Oliveira and Duston Poirier will be battling it out to see who is the king at 155 pounds on Dec. 11. Whoever wins would probably like to face McGregor next, but now McGregor has lost two in a row and the next shot was already promised to Justin Gaethje. That hasn’t stopped McGregor from dreaming about redemption.

“We’re still chatting about fighting techniques, all day, every day. He’s still talking about getting that belt again, all day, every day. What can you conclude from this? He loves fighting. He loves mixed martial arts. He loves competition. So let’s get back healthy, let’s get back training, and let’s go on a run in ‘22, and I’m sure there’s some people there with steam coming out of their ears that he’s coming back for that belt, but I’m sorry to upset you — he’s coming back there for that belt, so give me your best shot on Twitter.”

Conor McGregor continues to make strides in his bid to recover from the fractured tibia and fibula he suffered at UFC 264 in July. So much so, that his long-time coach, John Kavanagh, has been openly talking about who ‘Notorious’ may face in his comeback fight.

The SBG head coach recently made an appearance on The MMA Hour to discuss his star pupil and who the former dual-weight UFC champion may take on when he returns to the Octagon in the summer of 2022.

“I’ll be honest, the Nate Diaz trilogy is very, very tempting,” Kavanagh said. “It’s a fight that gives me nightmares. The man doesn’t stop coming forward, whether it’s three rounds or five rounds, but it’s an intriguing fight.

“So that one is definitely very interesting. But also the Tony Ferguson one — it never happened. It was talked about a lot. So any of those kind of legacy guys.”

John Kavanagh Refuses To Rule Out Any Top Lightweight Fighter

While Kavanagh prepares to see McGregor in a legacy fight, the man himself has been vocal about wanting an immediate title shot when he returns.

During his chat with Ariel Helwani, the Irish MMA coach was sure to mention a few other options for McGregor, including a fight with the winner of the UFC 269 main event.

”Look, that division is killer,” Kavanagh said. “Your Dan Hookers in there. The Islam [Makhachev] fight would be amazing as well, for obvious reasons. And we have whoever is going to win this belt coming up this Saturday. So, look, any of those names. I’m just excited to see Conor back healthy, training.”

John Kavanagh Claims Conor McGregor Has No Interest In ‘Warm-Up Fight’ Upon UFC Return

Conor McGregorJohn Kavanagh, the head coach of former two-weight UFC champion, Conor McGregor insists that as far as he can tell, his student had no intention of entertaining a potential “warm-up” contest in his return to the Octagon next year, following a string of three losses in his last four outings, and a fracture of his […]

John Kavanagh, the head coach of former two-weight UFC champion, Conor McGregor insists that as far as he can tell, his student had no intention of entertaining a potential “warm-up” contest in his return to the Octagon next year, following a string of three losses in his last four outings, and a fracture of his left tibia just four months ago.

McGregor, who headlined UFC 264 back in July, suffered both a second consecutive loss for the first time in his gold-laden mixed martial arts career, as well as a fracture of his left tibia in the opening round of his trilogy rubber match against former interim lightweight titleholder, Dustin Poirier, resulting in a doctor’s stoppage TKO loss.

The defeat came as McGregor’s second of the year and third from four lightweight walks, following a January blemish against the aforenoted, Poirier, when the latter became the first to finish the Dubliner with strikes in professional mixed martial arts in the form of a second round knockout on ‘Fight Island’.

In his time away from the Octagon, McGregor, who is expected to be sidelined until the summer of next year at the very earliest, appears to be chomping at the bit to return to active competition — with a slew of past-foes and new faces offering the Dubliner a willing dance partner to share the Octagon in his comeback fight.

However, according to Straight Blast Gym leader, Kavanagh, he has his reservations regarding McGregor’s willingness to drop a gear in his return and take a perceived “warm-up” fight post-losing skid and injury.

He’s [Conor McGregor] not so much about warm-up fights,” Kavanagh told Submission Radio. “He seems pretty warm to me as it is. So, what will come, will come. He’s got a hundred opponents lined up it would appear. But let’s just get back training, let’s test the leg and test everything, and when the time comes, I’m sure he won’t be short of choice. Whoever he faces he’ll be highly motivated. It’s clear at this stage Conor has a few quid, he’s got a few dollars in the bank account. So, that’s not the motivating factor at this stage, his motivating factor is competition and to improve himself and to test himself against whoever it is.

A notable matchup McGregor appears to have taken interest in, is a rematch against past featherweight champion, Max Holloway — who recently turned in a unanimous decision victory against Yair Rodriguez at UFC Vegas 43 earlier this month. And according to Kavanagh, he believes given the pair’s prior championship success, they should likely just agree to compete against each other at a certain weight — rather than cutting weight to link up at a weight class with title implications awaiting the victor.

John Kavanagh urges Conor McGregor and Max Holloway to scrap weight classes for potential rematch

The funny thing is, I think for guys at Conor’s [McGregor] level and Max’s [Holloway] level and those guys, I don’t even really know why they bother cutting weight anymore, you know?” Kavanagh said. “It’s almost like, just let them fight. Cause I’d imagine Max is probably heavier than Conor outside of fighting. I’ve heard stories of him getting up to really high weight. So, why would they agree to fight and then spend eight weeks trying to deplete themselves, trying to get down to some weight class to fight for some belt?

Max has had a few belts, Conor’s [McGregor] had a few belts,” Kavanagh continued. “So, they’ve done that. Push that to one side. I don’t know if that’s important anymore. Just have them fight at their weight, whatever their weight is, Just let them do it. Whatever weight they are, let’s go.

McGregor’s most recent professional victory came in January of last year in the main event of UFC 246 where he stopped one-time lightweight title challenger, Donald Cerrone with a 40-second high-kick and follow-up strikes in a welterweight headliner.

Kavanagh’s claims that McGregor is against the notion of a warm-up fight in his return, are only further backed up by claims from the latter that he will be competing for lightweight gold immediately in his return to the sport.
