A classless fan marred what could very well have been the final wrestling match of Jordan Burroughs’ career.

Burroughs, who owns the U.S. wrestling record with seven combined Olympic and world championships, was eliminated from the U.S. Olympic trials on Friday after falling 3-0 to Jason Nolf in the freestyle 74kg division at Penn State University.

As Burroughs was leaving the mat for potentially the last time in his illustrious career, a fan in attendance shouted “career is over” prompting Burroughs to turn back. Burroughs can be seen saying something to the idiotic fan before walking away without further incident.

Daniel Cormier Outraged by the disrespect directed at Jordan Burroughs

Accomplished wrestler and UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier was infuriated by the clip, referencing another incident featuring an unruly fan at UFC 300 earlier this month.

“What a piece of trash this guy is,” Cormier wrote on X. “To yell go home to a guy who’s represented our country the right way for 13 years/ 7 world or Olympic titles is insane. This is why Arman punched that fan. People behave with no consequence. This dude possibly wrestled last match of his career and this is what you give him?

“I love how manning jumped to his guys defense. Sometimes I am so lost in the way people act. It’s mind boggling. JB you’re still the man. Time gets us all. Also Jason Nolf is a dog!”

Veteran UFC referee Marc Goddard also chimed in on social media, displaying his disdain for the distasteful comment.

Jordan Burroughs

“Absolutely despicable,” Goddard posted. “For someone as accomplished & revered as JB to hear this POS say that. Same as online anonymity, this is what certain people think they can get away with in a world of no consequence. Would they do the same in less public setting? We all know the answer.”

It remains to be seen if Jordan Burroughs will pursue a career in mixed martial arts with his wrestling career now in the rearview. In a 2021 interview, Burroughs said that he was “not really interested in doing” MMA, but his tune has changed a bit in more recent years.

Alternatively, he could go the route of another Olympic gold medalist, Kurt Angle, and make the move to sports entertainment. Burroughs was showcased in the crowd during WWE’s WrestleMania XL event at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, being introduced by long-time play-by-play man Michael Cole.

UFC star Bo Nickal dubs Olympic gold medalist Jordan Burroughs a 'freaking fraud' in fierce exchange

Bo Nickal dubbed Olympic gold medalist Jordan Burroughs a “freaking fraud” following a heated exchange during the NCAA Wrestling Championships.

Their quarrel began as Burroughs provided commentary for ESPN’s broadcast as Penn State’s Carter Starocci took home his fourth NCAA Division I title with a 2-0 victory in the finals. Starocci accomplished the task while fighting through a knee injury that some speculated could be a torn ACL. During the match, Burroughs told UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier that Starocci’s opponent should have targeted that injured leg.

Following the win, Starocci spoke about the upcoming Olympic trials where he is expected to compete at 74 kilograms (163 pounds), the same weight class as Burroughs. Again, Burroughs made it clear that he would target Starocci’s injured leg, should their paths cross.

“He said April 19 and 20. I know a guy that’s going to be there,” Burroughs said on the broadcast. “I’d love to see him. I tell you what, if him and I meet each other in the bracket, I’m going right for that right leg.”

Nickal, who won three NCAA titles while competing for Penn State, slammed Burroughs’ comments, calling him “unprofessional” for openly admitting that he would target the injury.

“Really classy Jordan Burroughs as a commentator saying you’d target Starocci’s injury in competition,” Nickal wrote on X. “Sad that you think that way and even if you do you should keep that to yourself it’s unprofessional. For all your accomplishments I’d expect more.”

Burroughs quickly replied to Nickal’s criticism, writing: “You punch guys in the face for a living. Shut up.”

Bo Nickal accuses Burroughs of stealing Starocci’s moment

While speaking of the incident on his podcast a few days later, Nickal doubled down on his comment and trashed Burroughs for attempting to put the spotlight back on himself rather than allowing Starroci to celebrate becoming the sixth person in NCAA history to win four Division I wrestling titles.

“It’s not his moment,” Nickal said. “So why take a guy’s fourth national title and one of the biggest moments in his career and make it about yourself? To me, it just shows his character. The thing that bothers me is nobody sees this. He always tries to act like an ambassador of the sport and, ‘Oh, congratulations to Penn State, I’m so proud of you guys and what you’re doing.’ Bro, you’re a freaking fraud. You just want to make it about yourself” (h/t MMA Fighting).

Nickal will return to the Octagon on April 13 to lead off the UFC 300 main card in Las Vegas. With the Olympic trials scheduled to go down the following week, Nickal hopes Burroughs keeps the same energy should they cross paths at the event.

“Don’t come at our guys and don’t act friendly to me when I see you,” Nickal added. “Because I guarantee you, he’ll try to see me and be like, ‘What’s up Bo, dap it up,’ and be cool. I’m like no, we’re not cool. I don’t really care to be cool with you.”

Jordan Burroughs talks wrestling against Ben Askren

All-time freestyle wrestling great Jordan Burroughs wrestled against MMA fighter Ben Askren in 2019. Both Burroughs and Askren are accomplished wrestlers who have represented the United States in the Olympics.

Before he was a world champion in Bellator and ONE Championship, Askren was a highly touted folkstyle collegiate wrestler. In 2008, he wrestled on the US Olympic team as a freestyle wrestler. The 2008 team also included names that MMA fans would easily recognize such as Henry Cejudo and Daniel Cormier.

Jordan Burroughs is considered one of the all-time great wrestlers in freestyle history. Representing the USA he has earned six gold medals in Wrestling World Championships, first place in NCAA Division I wrestling in three competitions, plus an Olympics gold medal in 2012.

In 2019, Askren and Burroughs met on the mat in an official wrestling match for charity.

New Jersey born wrestler Jordan Burroughs recently sat down with Joe Rogan for an interview on his career. During their discussion, the topic of UFC fighter Ben Askren came up. Jordan Burroughs said Askren was a wrestler that he always had looked up to. Burroughs explained:

“I respect Ben [Askren] a ton. Wrestling Askren. I was in college in 2008 when he was on the Olympic team going to Beijing. I was on the junior world team. I was 20 years old at the time. He was the Olympian so I was like ‘Damn, that’s Ben Askren, like yo look who it is!’ Super cool for me to have that experience.”

Burroughs fondly recalls:

“I remember he took me for a ride to Wal-Mart in his Prius and he let me sit shotgun. From that day on I idolized him. You get to the point where idols become rivals. This guy is doing extremely well in the MMA world. He is a former wrestler but he still has his hand in wrestling.”

On the charity showdown in 2019, Burroughs is proud of how great of a turnout it created, he continued:

“It was a lot of fun. We drew a ton of fans. We sold out the Hulu theatre in Time Square.”

On his dream wrestling matchups, Burroughs listed:

“I want to roll with Conor [McGregor]. It’s probably my dream guy that just like get my hands on and feel a little bit. I think it would be fun. GSP.”

Islam Makhachev wants to test himself against the best.

Islam Makhachev has just won a main event fight in the UFC. He is on the fast track for a UFC title, but he is still looking to take on the best competition he can. He was briefly linked to a short-notice fight against Rafael dos Anjos, but that fight did not manifest. In the few days between his win over Bobby Green and offering to step in against dos Anjos, Makhachev and his team were filmed for Khabib Nurmagomedov’s YouYube channel.

In the most recent video, Makhachev is seen training with his team and helping his training partners get ready for their fights. At the end of the clip, Makhachev is wrestling with his manager, who is no match for him. He calls for some tougher competition. The name Jordan Burroughs is suggested, to which he laughs.

“Easy, Jordan Burroughs, if you want, let’s grapple brother, let’s grapple,” he said.

Jordan Burroughs Wants Makhachev To “Prove It”

Burroughs is an Olympic gold medalist wrestler and is also a five-time world champion. Makhachev and his mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov are known for their ground game as well. They are both proficient in Sambo wrestling, and Makhachev is a World Combat Sambo Champion.

This is not the first time Makhachev has expressed interest in testing himself against Burroughs. He mentioned it once in an interview with Daniel Cormier. Burroughs caught wind of this and has accepted the invitation.

Burroughs has been teasing interest in taking an MMA fight, although he has not committed to an MMA organization at this time.

Makhachev does some of his training at AKA in California alongside some other great wrestlers like Cormier. If Burroughs does want to give it a try, he would apparently be welcome to hop in and do so.

Decorated American wrestler, Jordan Burroughs is interested in having an MMA fight.

Burroughs who is 33-years-old is an Olympic gold medalist and a five-time gold medalist at the World Championships has been linked to MMA for a while. Burroughs is one of the most well-known and decorated wrestlers to never transition to MMA.

Throughout his career as a wrestler, Burroughs made it clear he had no interest in competing in MMA.

“I’m a big fan of MMA,” Burroughs said on The Jim Rome show earlier this year. “But at the end of the day, I love wrestling No. 1, and No. 2 I just don’t want to get punched in the face. It’s such a different sport. In wrestling, if you lose, you get taken down, you might have gotten put on your back and pinned. But if you get beat in a fight, you get choked out, tapped out, someone’s broken something. Wrestling match, if you lose, you go have dinner with your family. MMA, you lose, you go to the hospital… It’s something I’m not really interested in doing, but I’ll be an advocate for it because I love watching it.”

Now, it appears Jordan Burroughs has changed his tune as he took to social media to say he wants one MMA fight before he retires.

“I want one MMA fight before I retire. Just one.” Burroughs wrote.

If Burroughs does compete in MMA, it would be a massive fight. He is a big name in the combat sports world and would be a prized free-agent signing, even if it is for one singing. Whether or not he actually will fight in MMA is uncertain.
