There are moments from his UFC 127 bout with Michael Bisping in Sydney, Australia that are still fuzzy to Jorge Rivera, but there is at least one thing he knows for sure.

The illegal knee that Bisping hit him with in the first round? No matter what Bisping said later, that was no accident, Rivera told MMA Fighting on Sunday.

“That knee was deliberate, and I’ll tell you exactly how I know this,” Rivera said.

Michael Bisping punches Jorge Rivera at UFC 127.Michael Bisping showed off an impressive, well-rounded offensive arsenal against Jorge Rivera at UFC 127, using a combination of takedowns and punches to win a second-round technical knockout.

The fight was the culmination of a rivalry between Bisping and Rivera that included bad blood and harsh trash talk from both fighters over the last few weeks, including Bisping spewing a homophobic slur toward Rivera at the weigh-in. After the fight Bisping and Rivera appeared to have some more harsh words for each other, as did their respective corner men. But they eventually exchanged a hug, and Bisping said he was sorry in his post-fight interview.

“I just want to apologize,” Bisping said afterward. “He touched a nerve and I’m a sensitive guy.”

Michael Bisping gets booed nearly everywhere but in his home country of the UK. He might not particularly care about that, or even the reasons behind it. Lots of successful people have haters after all, and he’s made big dollars, established himself as a top middleweight and is a lightning rod for attention. Some of those people who have booed him in the past had no real reason other than group mentality, others simply don’t like the way he’s trash-talked opponents in the past.

Whatever your thoughts on what he’s done before, on Saturday night, Bisping deserved it. He deserved boos in victory. He deserved boos for his illegal knee strike that could have cost him the fight, and he deserved boos for his actions just after the fight ended, spitting at Jorge Rivera‘s cornermen.

Winner in the cage, loser by behavior.

Michael Bisping vs. Jorge RiveraIn the immediate seconds following the conclusion of an emotionally charged fight between Michael Bisping and Jorge Rivera, Bisping walked to the Octagon corner nearest to Rivera’s team and spit. That much is clear. But the two sides disagree on what exactly he was aiming at, and whether he hit it.

Rivera’s team says that the spit was directed — and hit — boxing coach Matt Phinney. Bisping denies it.

“No, not at all. I was spitting on the floor to let him know what I thought of him,” Bisping told MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani in a UFC 127 post-fight interview. “I apologized for that, and I never want to act like that.”

In the UFC’s latest promotional video blog for this weekend’s UFC 127 card, Michael Bisping uses a homophobic slur to insult his opponent, Jorge Rivera. This is the latest example of an ongoing problem of people involved with the UFC using completely unacceptable language. It needs to stop.

To be more specific, the UFC needs to stop it: The biggest and best mixed martial arts organization in the world needs to tell its fighters, staff and other employees that in 2011, homophobic slurs aren’t acceptable, and that those who can’t or won’t refrain from using such language are going to face serious consequences. And the UFC certainly shouldn’t feature the use of homophobic slurs in promotional materials like this video blog on the UFC’s own YouTube channel.

Michael Bisping talks trash to Jorge Rivera at the UFC 127 pre-fight press conference. For the last several weeks, it was Jorge Rivera who dominated the pre-fight conversation with a series of YouTube videos mocking fellow UFC middleweight Michael Bisping. But at Tuesday’s UFC 127 press conference in Sydney it was Bisping who did most of the talking, and Rivera had relatively few answers for him.

“For me, I’ve got a big fight to prepare for,” said Bisping. “I’m fighting in the premiere fighting organization in the world and I’m trying to behave accordingly. I’m a professional fighter; I’m not an idiot in the schoolyard, making up silly rhymes and jokes and making stupid videos.

“This is a press conference, by the way, Jorge,” Bisping added, turning to address his opponent, who sat on the other side of the podium with a baseball cap pulled down low over his eyes. “This is what you do. I know it’s your first time being involved in something like this. Welcome to the big leagues. After this you’ll be back to the undercard, believe me.”
