UFC flyweight champion Henry Cejudo has a lot of options for his next fight inside the Octagon. Initially, it was a foregone conclusion that “The Messenger” would challenge TJ Dillashaw for the 135-pound title next. However, with Dillashaw relinquishing the title due to a recent “adverse finding” in his drug test, plans have changed. Of […]

Coming off a unanimous decision victory over Dustin Ortiz last month (Sat. January 19, 2019), Joseph Benavidez recently joined MMA Junkie Radio. During their conversation, Benavidez touched on the recent trend of “Champ Champs” in mixed martial arts (MMA). Benavidez pointed out that nothing good has ever really come out of the trend. When Conor McGregor […]
Henry Cejudo names a fighter that he thinks is a worthy challenger in case a second bout against UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw doesn’t work out. Henry Cejudo names a fighter that he thinks is a worthy challenger in case a second bout against UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw doesn’t work out.
The UFC flyweight champion is just like everyone else in the same thinking of who he’ll fight in his next bout, which is Dillashaw.
However, if the UFC decides against running the fightback at bantamweight this time, Cejudo has no problem with that. The reason for it is due to him having a backup plan, which is a fight against tile contender Joseph Benavidez.
It should be noted that this all comes down to if the UFC decides to keep the flyweight division around after months of speculation. Benavidez is currently on a two-fight winning streak with wins over Alex Perez by TKO in November 2018 and most recently, Dustin Ortiz by decision at UFC on ESPN+1.
“If T.J. wants to run it back at 125 we can,” Cejudo told MMAJunkie. “If he still feels like he can beat me at ’25, let’s just run it again. To go to ’35 would be for the legacy, but I’m not opposed to him coming down to ’25 again. I’m not opposed to it. But the next person in line for me would be Benavidez.”

Perhaps no one has been more vocal about the future of the flyweight division than the man who has been competing in it since its inception, current #2 contender Joseph Benavidez.
Thus, with there still being no official word on the future of the division, Benavidez took to Instagram with the hopes of forming an unlikely ally to band together to help save the flyweight division: former opponent and current flyweight champion Henry Cejudo.
“We have the power now more then ever to keep it moving forward and bring the respect it/we deserve!” Benavidez wrote. “We represented for the flyweights that whole TUF season and delivered in our fight! (One of the hardest of my life and I know you feel the same) and we also did that on Saturday in Brooklyn! I want that belt, I was the first person to ever fight for that belt and I know the competitor in you wants to try to avenge the loss to me on your record!”
At UFC Brooklyn, both Joseph Benavidez and Henry Cejudo were victorious. Joseph Benavidez earned a unanimous decision victory over Dustin Ortiz and Henry Cejudo logged his first flyweight title defense. Now, if the division is to continue, there is only one natural progression, Benavidez argues.
“But like you said it is bigger then us … if you believe that to be true then this is the only option to keep this division moving forward, for all the current contenders, up and comers and the thousands dreaming right now of becoming the UFC Flyweight Champion. @henry_cejudo”
In their first bout 13 months ago, Joseph Benavidez got the better of Henry Cejudo in a razor-close split decision in a fight where Henry Cejudo found himself deducted one point in the first round for consecutive low blows.
Henry Cejudo was able to avenge his other loss to Demetrious Johnson last year by becoming the second UFC flyweight champion of all time, and Benavidez is dangling the idea of avenging his other loss in front of his face for the larger good of keeping the flyweight division moving and therefore alive.
Do you believe Henry Cejudo will face Joseph Benavidez next? Or will it be T.J. Dillashaw in a rematch from UFC Brooklyn?
With Henry Cejudo’s recent victory over TJ Dillashaw, the future of the UFC’s flyweight division is looking very promising. So much so, in fact, that former 125-pound title challenger Joseph Benavidez believes a rematch between himself and Cejudo is in order. So much so, in fact, that former 125-pound title challenger Joseph Benavidez believes a rematch between himself and Cejudo is in order. He posted the following on Instagram, praising “The Messenger’s” performance and calling for them to run it back:
“No matter what was said between us before this battle I gained so much respect for Henry after our fight! Watching his performances and seeing what he’s done for this division (the one that I’ve been fighting for since it’s beginning) I have only gained more respect!
“Henry – other weight classes will be there but ours is still not certain. We have the power now more then ever to keep it moving forward and bring the respect it/we deserve! We represented for the flyweights that whole TUF season and delivered in our fight!

Cejudo and Benavidez initially met back in December of 2016. Benavidez took home a controversial split decision victory, handing Cejudo his second-ever loss in mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Cejudo went on to earn back-to-back wins before landing another shot at then-flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson.
The former Olympian defeated Johnson at UFC 227 this past August via split decision, handing “Mighty Mouse” his first loss at 125 pounds. This past weekend (Sat. January 19, 2019) Cejudo made his first career title defense. He knocked out bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw in their superfight at 125 pounds.
On the same card, Benavidez defeated Dustin Ortiz via unanimous decision. Perhaps Benavidez will earn the next shot at the flyweight throne if UFC President Dana White decides to keep the division open.
