Featherweight contender Josh Emmett is hoping to move one step closer to a title shot by beating fellow contender Shane Burgos at UFC on ESPN 11 tonight (June 20).

A win would put Emmett on the cusp of big things and that is something he is very aware of. The Team Alpha Male standout will have a close eye on the upcoming featherweight title bout between Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway who will rematch at UFC 251 on July 11. Speaking exclusively to LowKickMMA Emmett revealed he believes Volkanovski will beat ‘Blessed’ again to retain his title, he said.

“I was calling it before they fought the first time. I kept saying in interviews that Volkanovski was going to upset Holloway, just because stylistically it is not a good match-up. I think it’s going to be the same outcome. I just believe stylistically it’s not a good match-up. Max (Holloway) would have to catch Volkanovski and put him away but I feel like Volkanovski, just his body type, he stays in his shell and he’s super technical, powerful, explosive and he comes from a wrestling background. I just feel like it’s going to be too much, and it will be the same outcome. I see him pulling off another decision, otherwise, I could even see Volkanovski landing a huge shot and possibly getting the TKO, but I do think he’ll be the champion after the fight.

While Emmett realizes he still has some work to do he has already thought about squaring off against the featherweight champion and believes they would make for a “super exciting fight”, he said.

“I’ve always said I think Volkanovski and I would be a super exciting fight because we are so similar in styles. We are like the same height, same build, same background. I feel like we are both some of the more explosive and powerful fighters in the division and we both come from wrestling backgrounds. So, I think that would be, stylistically an awesome fight and a perfect fight for me He’s a great champion. He’s a great fighter. He’s beat some of my teammates so I would love to get that back for them too.”

Featherweight contender Josh Emmett is hoping for another highlight-reel knockout finish when he faces off against Shane Burgos at UFC on ESPN 11 this Saturday (June 20). Emmett is riding high after back-to-back knockout wins over Michael Johnson and Mirsad Bektic. Speaking exclusively to LowKickMMA the #8 ranked featherweight noted that Burgos is a tough fighter who will give him all he can handle on fight night.

“He’s a dangerous fighter, Emmett said. “He’s an up and comer. He only has one loss on his entire pro record and amateur and that’s to Calvin Kattar. It was a super close, back and forth fight. Who knows what would’ve happened if it went to the scorecards if he didn’t get caught in the third (round). And that was a few years ago so I expect that Shane Burgos. He’s physically a big featherweight. He has a long reach. He is a great striker with a gas tank and high output and he’s well rounded – he has a BJJ black belt as well, a lot of people don’t know that.”

While Emmett has great respect for Burgos and his well-rounded game the Team Alpha Male fighter expects to benefit from his opponents come forward style which will make him easy to land heavy shots, he explained.

“He has a well-rounded game but I think I’m a bad match-up for anyone in the featherweight division and stylistically with him coming forward I don’t have to worry about chasing somebody around. He’s going to come right to me and I will land a big shot I’ll tell you that. One big shot can either end or change the fight.”

In an ideal scenario, Emmett would score one of his patented one-punch KO’s but he realises it isn’t always possible and the 35-year-old is more than ready to win this fight however it plays out, he said.

“In a perfect world I want to go out there and have another highlight-reel finish and it’s exciting for the fans. I feel like I have a well-rounded game. I can go wherever this fight goes. I feel like I can dictate where this fight goes. If I wanna take him down I can and I feel like my grappling and Jiu Jitsu is pretty good too as well and my gas tank so I’ll be able to match that. Even given the circumstances with the three-week training camp. I’m always in great shape and I fought five-round fights on the regional scene when I was a champion and I feel like I start to get my second wind in the championship rounds. So, I’m going to go for broke and it’s going to be an exciting and definitely entertaining fight for sure.”

Ranked Encounter Between Burgos, Emmett

A potential barn burner of a featherweight fight is being planned next month between Shane Burgos and Josh Emmett.

That’s according to MMA Junkie citing multiple people close to the situation after an initial report from ESPN’s Ariel Helwani. The fight is currently in the works for the UFC’s upcoming June 20 event which has no venue or location at the time of writing.

Burgos is currently on a three-fight winning streak following his knockout defeat to top contender Calvin Kattar — his only professional setback. In that run, he has defeated the likes of Kurt Holobaugh, Cub Swanson and most recently, Makwan Amirkhani.

“Hurricane” has since signed a new four-fight deal with the UFC as he looks to continue climbing up the ranks where is currently ranked No. 10.

Emmett is also enjoying a good run with two straight knockout wins over Michael Johnson and Mirsad Bektic following his knockout defeat to Jeremy Stephens in early 2018. In total, he has won four of his last five.

As it stands, the Team Alpha Male fighter is currently ranked No. 8 in the featherweight rankings.

Here is how the June 20 event looks at the time of writing:

  • Raquel Pennington vs. Marion Reneau
  • Roxanne Modafferi vs. Lauren Murphy
  • Lyman Good vs. Belal Muhammad
  • Shane Burgos vs. Josh Emmett

UFC featherweight contender Josh Emmett wants a higher-ranked opponent next.

Emmett is on a two-fight winning streak and has won four of his last five, including victories over Mirsad Bekic, Michael Johnson and Ricardo Lamas. He was recently scheduled to face Arnold Allen at UFC Raleigh last month before having to pull out.

Allen would go on to defeat short-notice opponent Nik Lentz to extend his own winning streak to seven in the UFC. Despite that, Emmett isn’t too keen on rebooking the fight:

“The Allen fight doesn’t really excite me,” Emmett told MMA Junkie. “The only reason I agreed to it was because (matchmaker) Sean (Shelby) said he was the only person available and I didn’t want to be iced any longer. I fought in March (2019) and July 2019 and finished two really tough opponents in devastating fashion after being sidelined for 13 months. I wanted to continue staying active and climbing the ranks, getting me closer to gold.”

Instead, Emmett wants someone ranked higher than him (#9) and believes he’ll rise to the occasion.

“I want to fight someone toward the top, so with another big win I’ll get a shot at what I’ve set out to do,” Emmett added. “I’m tired of fighting behind me and not getting the fights I want. Give me the opportunity and I’ll exceed expectations and rise to the occasion.

“I’m hoping to fight in May or June. It would be nice to fight on a big pay-per-view event on the main card instead of a ‘Fight Night’ or mobile app card for once.”

Whether he’ll get his wish on both fronts remains to be seen.

The upcoming UFC Raleigh event on Jan 25 has taken a major hit. According to MMA Junkie Josh Emmett has been forced off the card with an undisclosed injury.

Since coming up short against Jeremey Stephens, Emmett has been in fine form. The Team Alpha Male featherweight has won two straight in empatic fashion. He first brutally knocked out Michael Johnson at UFC Philadelphia in March 2019. Just a few months later he earned another KO win over Mirsad Bektic at UFC Sacramento. The win earned him a performance of the night performance and elevated him to #10 in the 145 rankings. He was hoping to continue his impressive run against up and coming British fighter Arnold Allen. Unfortunately that plan has taken a hit and the 25-year-old Englishman will now need to find a new opponent.

The TriStar fighter is riding one of the best win streaks in the division. Since joining the UFC in 2016 he has been absolutely flawless. Allen has won six straight and earned two performances of the night bonuses in the process. Last time out he picked up a career best win over the once great Gilbert Melendez at UFC 239. The win propelled him into the featherweight rankings where he currently sits at #15. UFC Raleigh would have given him a chance to earn another career best win and continue his rise up the rankings. Unfortunately, he won’t get that chance now. But hopefully the UFC can find a replacement opponent and keep the Brit on the card later this month.

A featherweight contest between Josh Emmett and Arnold Allen is on the agenda next.

The news was officially confirmed by the promotion on Wednesday as it will take place in the UFC’s debut show in Raleigh on January 25.

Emmett is on a two-fight winning streak. He bounced back from his knockout loss to Jeremy Stephens last year with a come-from-behind knockout of Michael Johnson earlier this year.

The American followed it up with a dominant first-round TKO victory over Mirsad Bektic in the summer.

Allen, meanwhile, remains undefeated in the UFC. His last outing was a unanimous decision victory over former Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez at UFC 239. As a result, the Briton went 6-0 with the promotion. He will face arguably his toughest opponent yet in Emmett next.

UFC Raleigh looks to be a stacked Fight Night event headlined by a heavyweight bout between Junior dos Santos and Curtis Blaydes.

In the co-main event, Frankie Edgar makes his bantamweight debut when he meets young prospect Cory Sandhagen. Meanwhile, a huge welterweight class is also in the works between Rafael dos Anjos and Michael Chiesa.

What do you think of Emmett vs. Allen? Who wins? And what do you think of the stacked UFC Raleigh card?
