Josh Thomson fought a tough, back-and-forth 15-minute battle with Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante at Saturday night’s Strikeforce event and walked away with what will be a controversial unanimous decision in a fight that easily could have gone either way.
Thomson, who said afterward that he “fought like s**t,” said he’s hoping for a third fight with Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez, with whom he’s split two previous fights.
“Gilbert and I are good friends,” Thomson said. “I’m looking forward to getting the title back. … Everyone’s waiting for the trilogy.”

That’s about as good as Strikeforce can do it, right there. America’s bridesmaid MMA promotion – typically cited for ineptness more than greatness – put on its best show in some time on Saturday night in San Jose. Nick Diaz and KJ Noons slogged through an exciting, if a bit repetitive, five-round main event that left Noons with a broken jaw and hand and Diaz bloodied, but still clinging to his welterweight title. The homies even looked like true homies after the final horn, hugging it out at the center of the cage. Meanwhile, Marloes Coenen appeared tall and capable in taking the women’s 135-pound belt off Sarah Kaufman, while Josh Thomson slipped by JZ Cavalcante, but once again proved that his main, main thing is making declarative statements and calling fools out.
Did the quality of the broadcast still leave a lot to be desired? Sure, Jim Ross, it always does. But at this point we’re focusing on the positives. Like the bitch mom from “American Beauty” we feel like grabbing Strikeforce by its rosy cheeks this morning and announcing: “You didn’t even screw up once!” Now on to the particulars.
Josh Thomson talks about which rounds he won, JZ Cavalcante‘s guillotine choke in the first round and the assorted injuries he picked up training for the fight in the Diaz vs. Noons 2 post-fight press conference.

Even though it probably committed its welterweight champion to the wrong grudge match, Strikeforce has managed to cobble together a decent little card for its Showtime broadcast tonight. Nick Diaz’s main event b…

Instead, the two avoided anything close to enmity. In the absence of the expected scene, it was former Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson who stole the show, blasting the media for its lightweight rankings. Interestingly, Thomson wasn’t defending his own placement on the list, but rather that of his Saturday night opponent, Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante, who is 15-3 with one no contest in his career.
Though Cavalcante’s lost two of his last three, Thomson believes he is among the top lightweights in the world, saying “he should be ranked in the top five.” But Thomson was just getting started, eventually taking aim at the WEC 155-pound champ, Ben Henderson.
