Julianna Peña is set to return at UFC 307 after being away from competition for nearly two years.

The last time that she stepped inside the Octagon, it was as the women’s bantamweight champion.

Though she came up short on that night in a rematch with Amanda Nunes at UFC 277, her comeback will see her look to reclaim the gold on October 5.

To do so, Peña will need to answer some questions about whether her time away and injuries will play a factor in her attempt to dethrone Raquel Pennington in Salt Lake City.

Jon Anik Says That Juliana Peña’s Meanness Will Help Her Overcome Ring Rust At UFC 307

UFC commentator Jon Anik expressed in a recent interview with Middle Easy that he isn’t concerned about Peña’s time away from the Octagon heading into this fight.

Though he did say that ring rust can be a factor depending on the fighter in question, he believes that the challenger is not someone that it will phase.

Anik referenced how if you listen to how the former champion’s coaches and teammates speak about her, they will immediately make reference to her aggressive mindset when she’s in the cage.

With this in mind, he doesn’t think that we will see anything less than the very best that Peña has to offer, come October 5.

“It’s amazing to listen to Juliana Peña’s coaches, to a man, talk about her relative meanness and nastiness. They can’t even get to the skills because Rick Little and Mike Valley both are just like dude, meanest man or woman in the gym, you know what I mean? So I don’t worry about her, I just think she’s sort of one of these ultimate competitors. The layoffs not ideal, the injury history is not ideal and Raquel Pennington just knows how to win fights.”

Bellator women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg wants to face the UFC 277 title bout winner between Julianna Peña and Amanda Nunes.

Cyborg recently took to Twitter to respond to an ESPN Tweet promoting the Peña vs. Nunes rematch. The 145-pound champion suggested that she fight the winner of the bout.

Peña and Nunes will rematch for the bantamweight championship at UFC 277 live on pay-per-view (PPV) in Dallas, Texas on July 30. As for Cyborg, she currently competes under the Bellator MMA banner as the promotion’s featherweight champion.

Obviously, a potential clash between Cyborg and the Peña vs. Nunes is very unlikely given the latter pair are in the UFC. Not to mention it’s highly unlikely UFC President Dana White goes out of his way to make an inter-promotional bout with Bellator.

Cyborg did compete in the UFC from 2016 to 2019. During that time she won and reigned as the UFC featherweight champion. She was dethroned by Nunes in their December clash in 2018, where Nunes became the first-ever female dual-weight UFC champion.

Nunes has not lost the featherweight title to this day, however, she was defeated by Peña via submission her last time out for the 135-pound title. Now, the pair are set for one of the biggest rematches in women’s MMA history.

It will be interesting to see who comes out on top when it’s all said and done.

What do you think about Cris Cyborg calling out the Peña vs. Nunes II winner? And who are you picking in the rematch? Sound off in the comments below!

Amanda Nunes has warned UFC Bantamweight Champion Julianna Peña to enjoy her title reign while it lasts.

The war of words ahead of their highly anticipated rematch has already begun with Nunes giving some advice to her foe as well as a warning that she will regain her belt when the time comes.

“That Belt’s Mine. I’m Coming For It”

The UFC recently announced the 30th season of its The Ultimate Fighter series, which will be starring the bantamweight stars. Both fighters will coach the season, which involves contestants of fighters from both heavyweight and women’s flyweight weight classes.

During a recent media scrum ahead of UFC 271, Nunes spoke to reporters regarding the recent TUF announcement as well as reflecting on her loss at UFC 269.

The current UFC featherweight champion is expecting Peña to exchange words with her on the series making for a more heated rivalry come the rematch.

“Yeah. I always expect that she’s talking,” Nunes said. “Actually, she has changed a little bit. She wants to look like the nice champion now.

“So, I give her a little bit of credit (for) slowing down a little bit. Because when you have that thing, it’s not like, a simple thing. You have to really be careful and think about what comes out your mouth. I’ve paid for that before.”

She continued to go into detail on how different life is as a champion once the belt has been captured while also warning Peña that she will be coming for the belt when the time comes.

“You have a lot of people who look up to you,” continued Nunes. “You’re in the public eyes now. I’ve been there before and I know how exciting it is, like TV shows; all those things. I know she’s very excited about all those things. But at the end of the day, you have to keep up with that, and I know in the rematch we’re gonna take that back. She’s having a good time right now.

“Enjoy every single day with that belt because that belt’s mine. I’m coming for it”

While having lost her bantamweight belt, Nunes still remains a champion at featherweight, meaning their rematch—which is set to happen sometime later this year—will be a head-to-head, champion vs champion clash in what will be one of the biggest women’s MMA fights in history.

Do you agree with Amanda Nunes that Juliana Peña’s reign as champion will soon be over?
