Ahead of his championship trilogy rubber match with two-weight champion, Amanda Nunes at UFC 289 in June, former undisputed bantamweight champion, Julianna Peña claims she is suffering from an apparent back injury – due to carrying the Brazilian and keeping the duel-weight best “relevant”.

Peña, the current #1 ranked bantamweight contender, is slated to headline UFC 289 on June 10. in Vancouver, British Columbia against undisputed bantamweight and featherweight titleholder, Nunes – attempting to reclaim a bantamweight title

Taking main event honors against the Bahia native at UFC 277 back in July of last year, Peña, the then-undisputed bantamweight champion, dropped her title to Nunes in a one-sided unanimous decision (50-45, 50-44, 50-43) loss to the Brazilian.

However, lodging one of the biggest upset successes in both Octagon and sport’s antiquity, Peña stopped Nunes’ undefeated run with a stunning second round rear-naked choke win at UFC 269 back in December 2019, snatching the undisputed bantmaweight crown in the process.

And now slated to headline the organization’s return to Canada as part of a flagship pay-per-view event, Washington native, Peña claims she is keeping the pound-for-pound best “relevant” in the sport.

“I’m a star,” Julianna Peña told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “You realize how bad my back hurts right now? My back is broken, okay, from carrying this fight and from making her (Amanda Nunes) relevant again after I beat her the first time.”

“Literally, my back hurts,” Julianna Peña explained. “We are, of course, going to be main event. I’m carrying us all the way there – like I always do.” (Transcribed by MMA News)

These recent comments from the outspoken, Peña, follows claims recently which she made, detailing how members of her team have informed her how Nunes intends to retire in the near future – in order to have children, and return to visit her family in her native Brazil.

Current undisputed UFC featherweight and bantamweight champion, Amanda Nunes has been tipped to consider her fighting future ahead of her expected Octagon return at UFC 289 in June – that is according to former champion and upcoming opponent, Julianna Peña, at least.

Slated to take main event honors at UFC 289 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, undisputed featherweight and bantamweight queen, Amanda Nunes will attempt to settle her rivalry with the above-mentioned Peña, having reclaimed her bantamweight crown from the Washington native last August.

Amanda Nunes avenged her loss to Julianna Peña last year

Headlining the promotion’s return to Canada, Nunes takes main event honors against The Ultimate Fighter victor and former bantamweight champion, off the back of a dominant unanimous decision (50-45, 50-44, 50-43) victory in their title re-run.

Dropping her bantamweight crown to Peña in what has been heralded as one of the greatest upset wins in Octagon history, Nunes was submitted with a second round rear-naked choke at UFC 269 back in December 2021.

Attempting to set herself apart from Peña and take bragging rights in the pair’s championship trilogy rubber match, Nunes, has, however, been touted to walk away from the sport in the near future.

“People from her (Amanda Nunes’) team are telling me she’s already one foot out the door,” Julianna Peña told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “She wants to have babies. She wants to go visit her family in Brazil. She’s not focused and in it to win it, not like I am. They’re literally telling me – her friends are telling me [she’s close to retirement].”

“People that know her and are close to her and her camp, are saying she’s already one foot out the door – ‘She doesn’t want to fight you,’” Julianna Peña explained. “I believe that. I know that that’s true.” (Transcribed by MMANews

UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Julianna Peña has sent a stern warning to longtime rival Amanda Nunes as she continues to pursue a trilogy.

Peña returned to the 135-pound throne earlier this month in the co-main event of the UFC 307 pay-per-view. In Salt Lake City, Utah, “The Venezuelan Vixen” fell on the right side of a controversial split decision to make Raquel Pennington’s reign a short one.

With two-time Olympic gold medalist Kayla Harrison moving to 2-0 in the UFC on the same night, many were quick to brand her possible clash with Peña as the next title fight in the bantamweight division.

The champ, however, had other plans. She used her time on the mic post-fight to call out former opponent Amanda Nunes, who retired after avenging her loss to Peña and subsequently defeating Irena Aldana to defend the 135-pound title.

But during an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show on Uncrowned, Peña suggested that Nunes is awaiting the result of her expected defense against Harrison, claiming the Brazilian’s comeback teases will dissipate when she blemishes the ex-PFL champ’s UFC record.

Despite being heavily beaten and bloodied herself en route to a lopsided decision defeat to Nunes in mid-2022, Peña insisted that the damage she’d inflict on Nunes in a trilogy fight would not be worth a lucrative comeback check from the UFC.

“(Nunes) thinks I’m going to lose to Kayla, and when I beat Kayla, she’s going to say, ‘I stay retired.’ But if Kayla wins, then she’s going to come out of retirement and look like some hero,” Peña said. “The reality is — and I know this for a fact — she feels that she doesn’t have anything to prove against me, and she feels that she hates Kayla more than she wants to prove something and fight me for a trilogy.

“She walked out of (the rematch) with frickin’ elephantitis on half her face, crutches, and a wheelchair. She knows it’s not going to be some walk in the park, easy night in the office,” Peña continued. “No amount of money they pay her is going to be worth the amount of damage that she’s going to have to sustain in this fight because I’m not going away, and she knows that.”

“The Lioness” and “The Venezuelan Vixen” were originally slated to share the cage for a third time in Canada last year, but a rib injury forced the latter out.

Peña was left bemused when her rival subsequently hung up the gloves and has long attempted to draw Nunes back to competition.

The Brazilian appears closer to a return than ever, but whether that desire derives from a hope to complete unfinished business with the champ or do battle with an ex-teammate in Harrison remains to be seen.

In the co-main event of UFC 307, Raquel Pennington narrowly lost the bantamweight title to Julianna Peña via split decision. A lot of people had “Rocky” winning the fight at the end of the fifth round, including the media scores and the commentators.

Not to mention the fact that Pennington said the UFC had already gathered her family so they could join her in the Octagon after assuming she had won the fight before the cards were read out by Bruce Buffer.

In the end, it was the opening round that proved to be the difference in the split verdict as Sal D’Amato and Mike Bell scored it in Peña’s favor. This is something that Pennington has had a hard time coming to terms with in the aftermath of the fight.

She told MMA Junkie in a recent interview that she was incredibly confident that she had done enough to win the fight when the final bell went. After attempting to analyze where she lost the opening round, Pennington was left with more questions than answers.

In her opinion, though Peña out landed her in the first stanza, her shots did far more damage which is outlined as the primary scoring criteria. Pennington told MMA Junkie that in this case, the criteria needs to be clearer and stuck to after feeling like she won the round in terms of damage.

“I’m still really frustrated with it because for me, it’s like what are you guys really looking for, you know? And they say damaging strikes but you just said everything right there so it’s like okay, some of the scorecards said she out struck me by four strikes but what were her four strikes doing? She was shadow boxing a little bit more, she wasn’t landing actual punches so that’s where it becomes really frustrating because I feel like the lines are not clear and it just robs so many athletes of opportunities… We need to be able to distinguish exactly what’s being looked for and I mean that needs to be honoured.”
