One of the best mixed martial arts cards of the year ended in an unsatisfying way Sunday night in Edmonton, as Kamal Shalorus fought Jamie Varner to a draw at WEC 49.

The fight was plagued by low blows on the part of Shalorus, who kicked Varner in the groin three different times. On one of those low blows Shalorus got a point deducted, and that point proved critical on the judges’ scorecards. One judge scored the fight for Shalorus 29-27, one scored it for Varner 29-27, and one scored it even, 28-28.

“I swear, I’m not like that,” Shalorus said afterward, referring to the low blows. “I’m a warrior. I don’t cheat. It was just an accident. I tried to low kick his knee.”

Sure, after UFC 115, Strikeforce: LA, Bellator 22 and the “TUF 11” Finale, it’ll be the fifth MMA show in fewer than 10 days but that doesn’t make WEC 49 any less deserving of your attention, does it? I mean, it’s Sunday night, what else are you going to do? Tuck in at a decent hour so you can get started being “FIRST!” in the comment section bright and early Monday morning?

After a litany of injuries, a loss to current champ Ben Henderson and a significant number of fans calling him a faker following his bout with Donald Cerrone last January, former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner is pretty much in a must-win situation against Kamal Shalorus tonight. Officially, Varner is 5-1 in his last six fights but his reputation has seen better days. Unfortunately, Shalorus — the former Olympic wrestler and undefeated MMA prospect — will provide a pretty stiff test. Toss in the return of featherweight phenom Josh Grispi from injury and this starts shaping up as a decent show. Besides, yours truly will be doing a “live Twitter” thing of this event for @VsMMA, so I know you’ll be following that …

World Extreme Cagefighting is back on Versus Sunday night for the first time in almost four months, with a card that might feel like something of a letdown compared to April’s pay-per-view offering, but should nonetheless provide plenty of the fireworks that the WEC consistently offers.

We’ve got the preview and predictions on the five-fight televised card below.

Sunday’s main event between lightweights Jamie Varner and Kamal Shalorus at WEC 49 isn’t a title fight, but it will have title implications.

WEC general manager Reed Harris said on a media call Tuesday that the winner will get the next crack at current champion Ben Henderson. Varner, a former WEC lightweight champ, has been down that road before. Henderson caught him in a guillotine at WEC 46 in January to unify his interim title with Varner’s belt.

And while Varner said he’s not overlooking Shalorus on Sunday, it’s clear his eyes are on a chance at redemption against Henderson, whom he was critical of for his stance of not wanting rematches after he’s beaten someone.

“See the thing is, he doesn’t have that decision-making power (to turn down a rematch),” Varner said Tuesday. “I think Ben knows – I think it’s a little bit of fear, to be honest with you.”

But Henderson defended his position on rematches to MMA Fighting on Thursday.

The MMA gods have blessed us with a ton of fights this week, last night there was the Strikeforce show in L.A., tonight, Bellator’s welterweight tourney concludes, and then this weekend, the omnipresent Zuffa will grant us a UFC and WEC on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Sweet. Looks like re-painting the bomb shelter will have to wait a few days.

Sunday’s WEC, which will take place in Edmonton, Alberta, will be headlined with a lightweight tilt between former champ Jamie Varner and the undefeated Kamal Shalorus. It’s an interesting bout, as Varner needs a win to keep himself within striking distance of a rematch with the new champ Ben Henderson, while a win for Shalorus, might just get him a crack at the title. While Varner is pretty well known, Shalorus hasn’t been fighting on the big stage very long- things to know- he’s Iranian, he comes from an accomplished wrestling background, and, he’s as strong as an ox…(thanks to MMA Fighting for the quote).

“I know some athletes who developed their strength through technology,” Shalorus said in an interview with MMAFighting.com. “Not me. I got it working with my hands, working in the field all day, working with the animals. We had sheep, goats, horses — I’d have to build a barn for the animals, I’d have to work in the garden and then go chop down a tree, I’d have to go into the mountains to get something. It was a hard workout. I would often think to myself while I was working that this would also help me with my wrestling.”

Kamal, you just made Matt Hughes’day….
