There seems to be some mixed reactions about the UFC’s recent tendency to place backup fighters on cards with big title fights or main events.

For example, when Tyron Woodley defended his welterweight championship against Darren Till, there was some concern the Englishman might not make weight. As a result, the UFC hired Kamaru Usman to cut weight and prepare as if he were going to fight should his services be required.

However, Woodley was against the concept and said he didn’t like the idea of taking a fight against a competitor completely different to who he was originally preparing for. Luckily, Till made weight and nobody had to worry about any of that. But it looks like UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker echoes his fellow UFC champion’s sentiments.

Whittaker recently spoke to media to promote his upcoming title defense against Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 234 in February. “Bobby Knuckles” said the UFC’s backup fighter concept is a ‘silly’ one to him (via MMA Fighting):

“I think the idea behind backup fighters is a little silly or there should be different incentives and things involved in it,” said Whittaker. “I think it should be more thought out, I can’t envision a guy getting paid to make weight. That’s not the sport, that’s not the name of the game.

“I think fights need to be made and deadlines need to be made, I think athletes themselves need to be more professional about the sport, I think a lot of guys are getting lax, a lot of guys are taking advantage of different loopholes they can exploit.”

Whittaker has been in this situation before. In his last fight against Yoel Romero, the contest was not for his 185-pound title because the Cuban wasn’t able to make weight. Instead, Whittaker and Romero competed in a five-round non-title contest. However, should Whittaker have been forced to fight a replacement opponent, it puts him in a corner.

While he’d like to refuse such a fight on short-notice, he’d have had to traveled across the world from his native Australia to the United States, all for nothing, as he wouldn’t be paid if he refused to fight:

“Again, you’re putting me in a corner, aren’t you?” Whittaker said. “It’s like we get to the fight night, my opponent can’t make it and you’re like, ‘You still gonna fight?’ What am I a pussy? You’re kind of forcing my hand when you put me in a corner like that.

“Does no one else see any holes in that plan? I think there are a lot of holes to be exploited in that plan. It seems silly to me, because the whole idea between fighting is you have an opponent that you prepare meticulously for, for weeks.

“And then all of a sudden, the guy says, ‘Can’t fight.’ And the backup guy is conveniently there? Nah, dude.”

The official UFC 234 poster has been released by the Las Vegas-based promotion. And it’s a good one to end the year off right.

For years now, posters have been something that fight fans look forward to seeing. The reason for that is due to it being the first major promotional material sent out by the promotion.

The promotion has confirmed that former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva will fight rising prospect Israel Adesanya at this show. It’s expected to serve as the co-headliner. UFC President Dana White has confirmed that if Silva wins this fight then he’ll get a crack at the middleweight title.

The UFC 234 pay-per-view event is set to be held on February 10, 2019, at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia. The promotion recently unveiled the poster for the show, which you can see here:

Robert Whittaker & Kelvin Gastelum took part in an interesting faceoff at the UFC 234 pre-fight press conference that recently went down. Whittaker is expected to defend the UFC middleweight title against Gastelum in the headliner of this show. Check out their staredown in Australia over the weekend here:

Gastelum made his return to the middleweight division back in 2016 where he surged up the rankings. Thus, he became a title contender with wins over the likes of Souza, Michael Bisping, Tim Kennedy, and Johny Hendricks. He has not fought inside of the Octagon since May 2018 when he beat Souza.

Whittaker won the interim middleweight title when he beat Yoel Romero back at UFC 213 in July of 2017 by unanimous decision. The UFC booked this fight yet again in the main event for the UFC 225 pay-per-view event at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. This is where Romero suffered a devastating split decision loss to Whittaker. The UFC champ is currently on a nine-fight win streak.

The Event

The UFC 234 pay-per-view event is set to be held on February 10, 2019, at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on ESPN+.

The promotion has confirmed that former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva will fight rising prospect Israel Adesanya at this show. UFC President Dana White has confirmed that if Silva wins this fight then he’ll get a crack at the middleweight title.

The belief is that this will be a #1 contender’s bout as Adesanya is likely fighting for a title shot should he win this fight. These are the only two bouts confirmed for this show as of this writing. However, the Las Vegas-based promotion is expected to announce more fights for this show in the coming weeks.

Ronaldo Souza willing to sit back and enjoy his life while waiting to get a crack at the UFC middleweight title after making some good money. The title contender is fresh off an impressive win that just gives him more confidence in his next opportunity.

Souza is coming off a third-round knockout victory over former UFC middleweight king Chris Weidman at UFC 230 at Madison Square Garden. Before that, he suffered a split decision loss to Kelvin Gastelum in May 2018 and is 3-2 in his last five bouts.

Thus, he believes the current state of the UFC middleweight fray will help him get back to the top. Now, he’s going to wait for this chance.

“I’m a plan A, man,” Souza told MMA Fighting. “I will fight for the belt. I want to wait for my chance. I’m a plan A, I will wait for my turn.”

“Jacare” made it clear that he wants his next fight to be for the title. He will have to wait to fight the winner of the upcoming Robert Whittaker vs. Kelvin Gastelum title bout.

The UFC 234 pay-per-view event is set to be held on February 10, 2019, at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on ESPN+.

“I’ve made a lot of money this year,” Souza said. “I fought three times, I won three bonuses. I have one performance bonus and two fights of the night, I knocked my last opponent out. I’ve made plenty of money, I can stay some time without fighting.”

Israel Adesanya Refuses To Be Whittaker vs. Gastelum Backup

Rising UFC middleweight contender Israel Adesanya refuses to be the backup fighter for Robert Whittaker and Kelvin Gastelum’s 185-pound title fight at UFC 234.

The post Israel Adesanya Refuses To Be Whittaker vs. Gastelum Backup appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Israel Adesanya isn’t willing to play second fiddle to anyone.

Adesanya made a huge case for a 185-pound title opportunity at UFC 230 earlier this month (Sat. November 3, 2018). He defeated top-ranked middleweight Derek Brunson via first-round knockout with relative ease. After the fight, Adesanya has been campaigning for a shot at the middleweight throne.

Currently, middleweight champion Robert Whittaker is slated to defend his strap against Kelvin Gastelum. Their fight will headline UFC 234 from the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia on February 10, 2019. Usually, the UFC will have a backup fighter in place in case something goes wrong with a title fight.

It looks like that role was recently offered to Adesanya by UFC President Dana White. However, speaking with the New Zealand Herald recently, “Style Bender” revealed that he shot the offer down:

“[White] mentioned it but I said no, I’m not about that.”

Adesanya seems to want to be the UFC’s first option when it comes to booking a UFC title contest. He doesn’t want to take the scraps of a fighter who can’t make the walk on fight night. Adesanya is currently undefeated in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career.

With his win over Brunson, “Style Bender’s” record improved to 15-0. The 29-year-old might need one more big win before punching his ticket to a 185-pound title opportunity.
