Off the back of her impressive submission win over former bantamweight champion, Holly Holm at UFC 300 earlier this month, promotional newcomer, Kayla Harrison has been accused of turning down a title-eliminator fight with Ketlen Vieira at UFC 303 – after calling her shot at gold.

Harrison, a former two-time PFL (Professional Fighters League) lightweight tournament victor, made he anticipated Octagon debut earlier this month on the preliminary card of UFC 300, taking home a one-sided second round rear-naked choke submission win over the above-mentioned, Holm.

And immediately staking a claim for a shot at bantamweight spoils – currently held by veteran, Raquel Pennington, Harrison also found prior links to a fight with former two-division titleholder, Amanda Nunes sprout again – who appeared surprised at the Ohio native’s failure to call her out following her successful UFC landing.

Vying for her own respective shot at Octagon gold, number two ranked contender, Vieira, who has been sidelined since a decision win over Pannie Kianzad back in July of last year, claimed Harrison was “running” from a title-eliminator clash at UFC 303 during International Fight Week this summer

“It seems that Kayla (Harrison) is just not taking the fight,” Ketlen Vieira told MMA Mania. “If the UFC offered the fight, the UFC wants the fight. It’s just Kayla not taking it. In the UFC, there’s only great athletes and if she thinks she’s going to be say no to this fight and take an easier fight, there’s no easy fights.”

“We’re all very good athletes,” Vieira warned Kayla Harrison. “She has to stop running, and take the fight and sign the contract.”

Entering the Octagon off the back of a victory, Harrison, a two-time Olympic gold medal winner to boot, turned in a decision win over UFC alum, Aspen Ladd in her final walk under the Peter Murray-led PFL.

Kayla Harrison may have extended her undefeated UFC record this past weekend, but not everything went her way second time around inside the Octagon.

Five months on from an emphatic arrival at the expense of former women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm, Harrison returned for her second taste of action on MMA’s biggest stage at UFC 307.

Saturday’s pay-per-view main card opened with the two-time PFL title winner facing off against the #2-ranked Ketlen Vieira, who didn’t go away in the fashion that her underdog odds perhaps would have suggested.

And although there was little doubt about who would have their hand raised after three rounds, the Brazilian did have moments of success, including a clean elbow in the clinch that bust Harrison open.

During her post-fight press conference, Harrison reflected on her successful performance in Salt Lake City, which has seen her start life in the UFC with consecutive wins over top-five opposition.

While she was able to steamroll through Holm en route to a submission, the Ohio native had to settle for a hard-fought decision on Oct. 5. And it even left Harrison tasting something new inside the cage — her own blood.

“That threw me, I’m not going to lie to you. Nineteen fights in, I’ve never seen my own blood in the cage. But it feels good,” Harrison said. “I feel like I’m going to grow from this tonight. It’s a really good learning opportunity for me, and tomorrow, we’re going to go back to the house, rewatch the fight and dissect it. Tomorrow’s a new day – lots of room for improvement for me.”

Although she didn’t put the kind of stamp on her UFC 307 performance that she had anticipated, Harrison’s third outing in the promotion is still expected to come with gold on the line.

Newly crowned queen Julianna Peña snubbed the two-time Olympic gold medalist post-fight, however, instead making good on her promise to call out retired former opponent Amanda Nunes.

UFC bantamweight Raquel Pennington expects big things if she walks out victorious at UFC Fight Night 217. The Colorado Springs native is scheduled to face Ketlen Vieira this Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada.

With a win over No.2 ranked Viera, Pennington could potentially fight for the women’s bantamweight title next. During UFC Fight Night 217 media day, Pennington said her upcoming fight is a “great opportunity”. She also called for a second shot at UFC gold if things go her way. A win would extend Pennington’s five-fight unbeaten streak. She is also ranked No. 5 in the bantamweight division.

“I expected this fight, honestly,” Pennington told the media. “I would be surprised if it wasn’t this one. I’m just excited. Great opponent, great opportunity, and that’s exactly what I’m seeing this as. She’s just another stepping stone in my way back to that world title shot.” (h/t MMA Junkie)

Raquel Pennington Believes a Win Over Ketlen Vieira Warrants a UFC Title Shot

“I’m on a roll. You can’t deny me, “Pennington said. “Five-fight win streak after Saturday, I’m right there. Give me my world title shot back. They’re gonna do what they do. I don’t know what Amanda (Nunes) is doing at this point and everything else, but I would actually love to fight Saturday, come out of the fight healthy, and then take a couple of weeks off, enjoy myself, breathe a little bit. And then I would love to fight in May and have that opportunity, and then the baby is born in June, and then focus on being a mom for a little bit.” (h/t MMA Junkie

Pennington last fought at UFC 273, where she defeated Aspen Ladd by unanimous decision. She has accumulated the most bouts (15) in UFC bantamweight division’s history.
