There’s perhaps nothing MMA fans love to do more than play fantasy match-maker, and it appears Khabib Nurmagomedov is no different.

In an interview with MatchTV, the UFC lightweight champion was asked what the one fantasy fight he would love to see was. With endless possibilities to choose from, Nurmagomedov went with one of the great ‘What-Ifs” of the sport (H/T BJPenn via Lenta).

“If just a fantasy, then I would take Brock Lesnar — a heavyweight. And it would be possible to make him a fight with Fedor Emelianenko in Russia,” Nurmagomedov said. “It would be interesting to organize a fight between the stars of Russian and American MMA. By the way, anything can happen.”

In their primes, Lesnar and Emelianenko were regarded as the greatest heavyweights on the planet. Lesnar was a former All-American wrestler in university, who came into the world of MMA after a lengthy run in professional wrestling. After coming up short in his UFC debut, he would go on to eventually beat Randy Couture for the title and defend it multiple times. His dominance combined with his celebrity from his time with the WWE made him one of the biggest stars in UFC history. Emelianenko went on an unprecedented 28-fight unbeaten streak while competing for Rings, Pride, Affliction and Strikeforce in the early-2000s. Often the smaller man, ‘The Last Emperor’ used his background in sambo to overcome the size deficit and become regarded as one of MMA’s all-time greats. UFC president Dana White reportedly tried numerous times to sign the Russian superstar during Lesnar’s run as heavyweight champion, but alas, it was never meant to be.

With his fighting career seemingly behind him, Khabib Nurmagomedov will have plenty of time to act as an actual matchmaker for his upstart Eagle Fighting Championship. He has said he hopes the promotion can serve as a launchpad for fighters to the UFC.

Who would win between Lesnar and Emelianenko? What is the one fight you would like to make?

Khabib Nurmagomedov: Lightweight Division ‘Needs To Go On’

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has booked another meeting with UFC president Dana White, and it sounds like he is ready to move on for good.

Nurmagomedov retired from the sport following his submission victory over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254. Despite this, White has opted not to strip him of the title, believing he would be able to convince ‘The Eagle’ to come back for one more fight. There was hope Nurmagomedov would be open for a rematch against Conor McGregor should he had been victorious at UFC 257, but that was quickly closed when Dustin Poirier knocked him out in the second round. In the end, Nurmagomedov told White that there aren’t any potential fights that interest him, and seemed to double down on his retirement claim.

Since then, a number of rumors about Nurmagomedov’s future have been thrown about, most notably involving a potential match-up against UFC Hall-of-Famer Georges St-Pierre. But with the champion apparently uninterested in the fight and seemingly having a full plate running the Eagle Fighting Championship, it’s becoming more apparent by the day that we’ve seen the last of Nurmagomedov inside of the octagon.

In an interview with Match TV, Nurmagomedov revealed he has another meeting with White scheduled for the end of the month. He agreed that the lightweight division “needs to go on” and that Poirier should be crowned the champion (H/T Bruno Massami).

Given everything that has happened in the lead-up to this meeting, it’s safe to assume Nurmagomedov will let White know he is officially retiring from the sport and give up his belt. You can expect White to continue to push for one last fight, but it sounds as though ‘The Eagle’ has made up his mind, at least for the immediate future. An eventual return will always be on the table, but for now it appears the lightweight division will be allowed to play out with Nurmagomedov watching from the sidelines.

Since retiring from the UFC in 2020, Khabib Nurmagomedov appears to be dedicating himself to giving back to the people of Dagestan. His own promotion, Eagle Fighting Championship, will act as a stepping stone for Russian MMA fighters, offering them a route to the UFC should they perform well.

However, recent reports indicate that Khabib is not only using his organization to further it’s local athletes careers but also to combat drug addiction. In an article posted by Russian sports site Sports Express, Magomedzaid Zaidov, a welterweight for Eagle Fighting Championship, spoke out about how Nurmagomedov personally tries to help the local people break out of their addictions.

Zaidov had the following to say: “Khabib himself is very closely involved in the process of helping drug addicts. He helped a lot of people. [There are] 50 people who he helped to rehabilitate. Khabib took his time, came, paid attention, talked to them. It costs even more than financial aid. And the attention that a person pays is worth a lot. Khabib helped a lot with this – the guys from the area who he grew up with” (Translated & Transcribed by RT Sports).

Zaidov himself is a former addict, who is now also running a rehabilitation centre as part of the Eagle Fighting Championship team. He has a fight booked for Febuary 9th, against Ibrahim Gaidorov, in what will be his debut for Eagle FC.

In an episode of the “Anik and Florian” podcast, the former UFC title challenger Kenny Florian stated that according to a “well-known coach”, former UFC Welterweight and Middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre and UFC Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov are preparing to fight each other.

You can find the clip of Florian talking about the fight below.

“I heard some pretty crazy news over the weekend,” Florian told Jon Anik. “I won’t say exactly where it’s from but it’s from a well-known coach who, apparently, is aware of a fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and a legend in the UFC, a former two-time champion, Georges St-Pierre. Supposedly that is a fight that, I don’t know if it’s confirmed, but it is a fight that Georges might be getting ready for and is preparing for. I don’t think he’d be getting ready for that or be telling people that he’s going to be getting ready for a big fight unless it was actually happening.

“And for me, I think the only fight Khabib Nurmagomedov would come back for would be against a legend of that kind of stature. A guy that did many similar things that he did. And you can kind of bill it as a fight between two of the biggest takedown monsters in UFC.” (Transcribed by Heavy.com)

Nurmagomedov shocked the world in October of last year when he announced his retirement after choking out Justin Gaethje to retain his Lightweight title at UFC 254. However, the undefeated Russian has always talked about his interest to fight “GSP” in a super fight. St-Pierre also dropped several hints in the past that he would be interested in a fight against the UFC Lightweight champion saying that a potential fight “freaking excites me.”
