Khamzat Chimaev betting favorite to hold title at end of 2024 after UFC 297

Unbeaten middleweight berserker, Khamzat Chimaev remains a significant betting favorite to hold the divisional crown at the end of the year – despite Dricus du Plessis’ championship win at UFC 297 over the weekend against Sean Strickland in Canada.

Chimaev, the current number nine ranked middleweight contender, improved to 13-0 as a professional back in October of last year at UFC 294, landing a close, majority decision win over former undisputed welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman over the course of three rounds.

Striking middleweight gold at UFC 297 over the course of the weekend in ‘The Great White North’, promotional-perfect contender, du Plessis landed a close split decision win of his own over defending champion, Strickland – achieving Octagon spoils for the first time in his four year tenure in the promotion.

Khamzat Chimaev betting favorite to hold title at end of 2024

And despite his victory, du Plessis is currently behind the undefeated, Chimaev on the betting lines to hold the undisputed middleweight champion at the end of 2024 – drawing odds of +150 – with the unbeaten Chechen currently boasting odds of +100 to hold gold at the end of the year.

Markets globally are offering not just outright odds on the winner of bouts, but a host of the best offshore betting offers interesting prop wagers and bets – including the chances of certain fighters winning titles, or even holding them at the end of December this year.

Staking his claim for the next shot at middleweight gold even prior to UFC 297 in Canada, Chimaev was immediately rebuffed by both Strickland and new-champion, du Plessis.

And taking in the night’s action in Toronto, Khamzat Chimaev called for an immediate championship fight with du Plessis, warning him against running from his challenge, however, has been once more rebuffed by the South African gold holder.

“Who takes that guy [Khamzat Chimaev] seriously?” Dricus du Plessis questioned assembled media after UFC 297.

Appearing to favor a potential fight with former two-time middleweight titleholder, Israel Adesanya in an immediate grudge fight – as soon as UFC 300 in April, Chimaev has also been linked with a fight against the City Kickboxing maestro, however, is still recovering from a recent surgical procedure to address a hand ligament injury suffered against Usman – as well as a mysterious illness he contracted following the bout.

The third most likeliest fighter to hold middleweight gold at the end of 2024 comes in the form of Adesanya himself – who would become the first-ever three-time divisional titleholder with a victory before the turn of the annum.

Boasting odds of +300, Adesanya sits slightly higher than the uber-prospect, Bo Nickal – who beats out the likes of former champion, Sean Strickland, as well as Ikram Aliskerov, as well as Robert Whittaker – and former kingpin, Alex Pereira, with odds of +4,500 falling beside the Brazilian.

Slated to make his comeback at UFC 299 in March, Nickal, who has landed dominant stoppages in his Octagon debut and sophomore outing, is set to take on Cody Brundage in a main card slot on the flagship return to ‘The Sunshine State’ later this year – holding odds currently of +550 to hold the middleweight belt at the end of the year.

And speaking of former champion, Pereira, the GLORY Kickboxing Hall of Fame inductee has already flirted with the potential of a future fight with the newly-minted, du Plessis in a bid to avenge training partner, Strickland – claiming he would be open to one final “rodeo” at the middleweight limit.

Pereira’s claims come hot on the heels of aspirations of two-weight coronation for Pretoria favorite, du Plessis, who claimed he would make the light heavyweight limit for the chance of taking out Pereira in a championship pairing in the immediate aftermath, should he defeat Strickland at UFC 297.

Knocked back in his pursuit of his first title tilt since his move to the UFC from Middle Eastern promotion, Brave CF back in 2020, AllStars MMA staple, Khamzat Chimaev has gone on a run recently of calling out any and all newly-crowned champions – from the likes of Pereira, du Plessis, and welterweight kingpin, Leon Edwards.

Just last week, Chimaev also labelled a potential bout with heavyweight best, Jon Jones a “dream” bout for him – in a bid to get revenge for Swedish veteran and teammate, Alexander Gustafsson in the future – with Jones quickly knocking back the former’s advances.

However, despite du Plessis’ reluctance to offer Khamzat Chimaev a crack at his newly-minted championship off the back of UFC 297, the Chechen contender – who has been urged to land more notable victories within succession without so much time away from the Octagon, is riding the shortest line to hold the middleweight strap come the conclusion of 2024 – in what could prove to be a massive year ahead for one of the promotion’s most dominant recent performers.

Khamzat Chimaev Reacts to Dricus Du Plessis’ Middleweight Title Win at UFC 297: ‘It’s My Time Now’

It didn’t take long for Khamzat Chimaev to chime in following the arrival of a new middleweight world champion.

On Saturday night, Dricus Du Plessis scored the biggest win of his mixed martial arts career, earning a split decision victory over Sean Strickland to claim the 185-pound title at UFC 297 in Toronto. As is the case every time we are presented with a new UFC champion, fight fans online immediately begin to ask the question — what’s next?

It’s a query entirely too early for anyone to answer, but if things go his way, Khamzat Chimaev will be the first man to challenge ‘Stillknocks’ for his shiny new chunk of gold. ‘Borz’ took to social media moments after Du Plessis’ hand was raised, suggesting that a fight between the two should go down at the promotion’s next landmark event on April 13.

Chimaev followed that up with a short video putting the new middleweight titleholder on notice.

Is Khamzat Chimaev Next in Line?

Khamzat Chimaev’s last appearance inside the Octagon came in October when the promotion returned to Abu Dhabi for UFC 294. Originally scheduled to face Paulo Costa, ‘Borz’ instead squared off with short-notice replacement opponent Kamaru Usman. Chimaev walked away with a majority decision victory against the former welterweight champ. That extended his undefeated record to 13-0 and had him once again calling for a title opportunity.

With UFC 300 less than three months away, it’s unlikely that the Dricus Du Plessis will be willing to make the quick turnaround for such a fight. Unless, of course, the UFC backs up a dump truck full of cash to his front door.

The likelier scenario is that ‘DDP’ will put his title on the line against Israel Adesanya when ‘The Last Stylebender’ makes his return to the Octagon, rumored to be sometime in the summer of 2024. But as we all already know, anything is possible in MMA.

Does Khamzat Chimaev deserve the first shot at Du Plessis’ middleweight title, or is ‘DDP’ vs. Adesanya the fight to make?

Jon Jones shuts down Khamzat Chimaev's call for dream UFC fight stop it

Jon Jones has scoffed at the idea of a future clash with unbeaten middleweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev – after the latter named a bout with the heavyweight champion as a “dream” fight for him in the future.

Chimaev, the current number nine ranked middleweight contender, is in the midst of a 13-fight unbeaten run since his mixed martial arts debut, most recently landing a close, majority decision win over former undisputed welterweight kingpin, Kamaru Usman back in October at UFC 294.

As for Jones, the Endicott native has been sidelined since he returned to the Octagon from a three-year hiatus at UFC 285 back in March of last year, landing the vacant heavyweight crown with a one-sided opening round guillotine choke submission win over former interim gold holder, Ciryl Gane.

And claiming he is “guaranteed” a title fight against either Sean Strickland or Dricus du Plessis come the culmination of UFC 297 this weekend in Canada, Chimaev claimed a fight with current heavyweight kingpin, Jones was a “dream” matchup for him in the future.

“Depends which weight class,” Khamzat Chimaev said. “He’s (Jon Jones) now a heavyweight. You’re asking me? For sure, I think I will win. That’s a hard fight for everyone. He fought two times with my training partner, Alexander Gustafsson – they had a good fight.”

“So, I became a fighter with Alex, been training with him,” Khamzat Chimaev explained. “For sure I want to fight with [Jones] so it will be a big history if we fight. Since Alex gave him the best fight in history, now maybe it’s my time to fight him, as well.”

Jon Jones shuts down Khamzat Chimaev definitively

Reacting to Chimaev’s sights on a fight, former two-time light heavyweight, Jones stopped the Chechen in his tracks.

“Khamzat Chimaev stop it, don’t let people ask you those questions,” Jon Jones posted on his official X account.

Khamzat Chimaev UFC 300

Hours after Dana White made a major announcement regarding UFC 300, undefeated Chechen monster Khamzat Chimaev hinted that his next appearance could very well be at the massive milestone event.

With UFC 300 a few short months away, the card is beginning to shape up with some very exciting matchups, including the recently announced BMF title fight between Justin Gaethje and former featherweight champion Max Holloway. However, one of the biggest complaints from fans thus far is the lack of noteworthy championship bouts. Thus far, the only title tilt announced will pit strawweight queen Zhang Weili against the division’s No. 2 ranked contender, Yan Xiaonon.

With pundits still seeking a bonafide blockbuster bout for the historic evening, Khamzat Chimaev sent MMA Twitter into a frenzy by teasing his potential return at the landmark event on Instagram.

Who Could Be Khamzat Chimaev’s UFC 300 Opponent

As far as potential opponents, there are a plethora of options, including high-stakes scraps with Jared Cannonier and Israel Adesanya, the two highest-ranked middleweights with a wide-open schedule. Though we suspect that if ‘Borz’ is willing to step inside the Octagon so close to Ramadan, it’ll have to be for something more than another divisional showdown.

With the 185-pound crown on the line this Saturday (January 20) at UFC 297, it’s possible that the winner between reigning and defending champ Sean Strickland and challenger Dricus Du Plessis could find themselves securing a big bag for accepting a relatively quick turnaround against one of the most dangerous men on the roster.

Chimaev’s last appearance inside the Octagon came at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi against short-notice replacement Kamaru Usman. ‘Borz’ walked away with a closely contested majority decision, though many believe Chimaev’s questionable gas tank was exposed in the second and third rounds.

That resulted in one judge ruling the bout a draw after handing Chimaev a 10-8 in the first. The other two judges favored Chimaev 29-27, securing his 13th straight win.

Khamzat Chimaev backed as number one option to fight for gold after UFC 297 he's got a ton of hype

Unbeaten middleweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev has been mooted as the next likeliest to fight for undisputed gold after UFC 297 this weekend according to Hall of Fame star, Michael Bisping – who points to the Chechen’s recent uptake in “hype”.

Chimaev, the current number nine ranked middleweight contender, has been sidelined since he co-headlined UFC 294 back in October of last year in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Landing his thirteenth consecutive professional victory, the AllStars MMA staple scored a close, majority decision win over former undisputed welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman in the pair’s short-notice – billed title-eliminator.

And sidelined through injury after a surgical procedure on his hand to address a ligament issue, Chimaev has claimed he’s been “guaranteed” a shot at either Sean Strickland or Dricus du Plessis after UFC 297

Khamzat Chimaev receives backing to fight for gold after UFC 297

According to Manchester native, Bisping, Chimaev is most likely next to fight for middleweight gold, despite distinct reservations from Strickland, and most notably, du Plessis.

“I feel like I talked about this recently: Dricus du Plessis, if he does become the champion, there’s a lot of options for him right, but number one option is probably Khamzat Chimaev,” Michael Bisping said on his YouTube channel. “Yes, Israel Adesanya, there is beef there. They’ve squared off in the Octagon, they’ve went back and forth, they’re both claiming to be the real Adrican and all this type of stuff.”

“…Chimaev is ranked number nine, okay? And that’s probably another reason why Dricus says that he doesn’t deserve it,” Bisping explained. “Okay, fair enough, He’s ranked number nine, but he’s got a ton of hype. He just beat Kamaru Usman, who yes, was a welterweight, but he was the pound-for-pound number one. He was a longtime welterweight champion for many defenses and on top of that Dana said, whoever wins, Kamaru or Khamzat, they get to fight for the belt, so there it is there.”

Khamzat Chimaev eyes blockbuster Jon Jones fight in the future at weight class UFC

With an Octagon tenure spanning a series of two weight divisions so far, unbeaten middleweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev appears to have sights set on rekindling the AllStars MMA rivalry with heavyweight champion, Jon Jones – claiming a fight with the Endicott native may be on the horizon for him.

Chimaev, the current number nine ranked middleweight contender, has been sidelined since he took home a close, debated majority decision win over former undisputed welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman in his Octagon comeback back in October at UFC 294.

Sidelined through hand surgery to address a ligament injury suffered in the opening round of his fight with former pound-for-pound number one, Usman, Chimaev claims he has been “guaranteed” a shot at middleweight gold next.

And ahead of UFC 297 this weekend in Canada, Chimaev claimed he was unaware that middleweight champion, Sean Strickland or incoming title chaser, Dricus du Plessis were “scared” of him – with both recently confirming their disinterest in fighting the Chechen-born finisher in the future.

Khamzat Chimaev weighs up Jon Jones showdown

Weighing up a potential weight class leap in search of a third victory in separate weight classes amid links to a showdown with light heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira – whom he predicted he would finish, Chimaev has now name-dropped former pound-for-pound number one, Jones – in the vein of seeking revenge for his training partner, Alexander Gustafsson.

“Depends [on] which weight class,” Khamzat Chimaev told Smile 2 Jannah. “He’s (Jon Jones) now a heavyweight. You’re asking me? For sure, I think I will win. That’s a hard fight for everyone. He fought two times with my training partner, Alexander Gustafsson – they had good fight.”

“So, I became a fighter with Alex, been training with him,” Khamzat Chimaev explained. “For sure I want to fight with [Jones] so it will be a big history if we fight. Since Alex gave him the best fight in history, now maybe it’s my time to fight him, as well.”
