Paulo Costa vows to make Khamzat Chimaev suffer at UFC 294 take over Abu Dhabi

Ahead of his Octagon return at UFC 294 in October, one-time middleweight championship challenger, Paulo Costa has promised to “take over” Abu Dhabi – and make arch-rival, Khamzat Chimaev “suffer” in their long-awaited grudge-match.

Costa, the current number seven ranked middleweight contender, is scheduled to make his first Octagon outing since August of last year in his return at UFC 294 in October, taking on the undefeated Chimaev in the Chechen’s return to the middleweight limit to boot.

Sidelined since UFC 278 last summer in Salt Lake City, Costa most recently snapped a two-fight losing skid with a unanimous decision win over former undisputed middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold over the course of three rounds.

As for Chimaev, the unbeaten 12-0 finisher has been sidelined since September of last year, most recently turning in a first round D’Arce choke submission win over Kevin Holland at the T-Mobile Arena. Chimaev currently holds the number four rank in the official welterweight pile.

Paulo Costa plans to make Khamzat Chimaev “suffer” at UFC 294

Jabbing back-and-forth with AllStars MMA staple, Chimaev over the course of recent weeks following the confirmation of their matchup in the Middle East, Costa claimed he would knock out the former in the first round. And has now laid the ground works to make Chimaev “suffer” when they share the Octagon.

“I hate that dude,” Paulo Costa said of Khamzat Chimaev during an interview with MMA Junkie. “I’m training to make him suffer. Not only to beat him – but I want to do that in great style. I put all my skills and all my concentration, focus to be better than ever.”

“Physically, mentally, technically, all parts together to help me perform better than ever,” Paulo Costa continued. “I know over there in Abu Dhabi it will be kind of his house, but I don’t care. I’m going there to take over.”

Khamzat Chimaev shows off ripped physique ahead of middleweight return at UFC 294

Ahead of his impending middleweight division climb at UFC 294 in October, undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev appears to be packing on the mass ahead of his Abu Dhabi, UAE clash against former title chaser, Paulo Costa.

Chimaev, the current number four ranked welterweight contender, improved to 12-0 as a professional back in September of last year, securing a first round D’Arce choke submission win over Kevin Holland in the pair’s impromptu catchweight clash at UFC 279.

And making a return to the middleweight limit for the first time since a debut win over John Philips in his Octagon landing back in the summer of 2020, Chimaev will draw one-time middleweight title challenger, Costa in his return to the weight class in the Middle East this fall.

Khamzat Chimaev appears in great shape ahead of his UFC 294 return

Sending fans and followers alike into raptures on his official social media overnight, Khamzat Chimaev showed off a massive back and frame in a picture taken in front of a mirror, appearing to pack on the size ahead of his return to 185 pounds later this year. 

Turning in two impressive victories last year, Chimaev, a staple of AllStars MMA most recently landed a win at the welterweight limit in April of last year, defeating former title challenger, Gilbert Burns in a close, unanimous decision win in Jacksonville, Florida. 

And ahead of his clash with Costa at UFC 294, Chimaev, who has been labelled as a “dead man walking” by the Belo Horizonte native, claimed Brazilian fans have been offering their own support to him throughout the build-up of the pairing, while insisting he will make Costa “cry” inside the Octagon in October.

Chimaev has also received the backing of former two-weight champion and UFC color commentator, Daniel Cormier ahead of his return, claiming a win for the Chechen over Costa would likely see him earn a middleweight title fight against Israel Adesanya.

Paulo Costa predicts first round KO win over Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294

Sharing a tense back-and-forth ahead of their October pairing in Abu Dhabi, former middleweight title challenger, Paulo Costa has now predicted a quickfire win over rival, Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294 – envisioning an opening round knockout win over the unbeaten finisher.

For Costa, the Belo Horizonte native has claimed Chimaev is a “dead man walking” ahead of the bout, and has now predicted a first round win over the 12-0 berserker in their co-main event slot. 

“I think this fight will be crazy and it’s going to end in the first round,” Paulo Costa said during an interview on MMA Fighting.

“Knockout, I will not try to submit him (Khamzat Chimaev),” Paulo Costa explained. “I’m a black belt but I will not try to submit him. I don’t think he’s going to try to submit me as well. So explosive of a guy, so full of energy. I prefer knockout.” 

Challenging for middleweight gold back in 2020, Costa suffered a second round knockout loss to current and two-time divisional champion, Israel Adesanya in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Nobody likes him, all Brazilians write to me and support me. That guy’s not Brazilian, so I’m going to go and smash this guy and make him cry.”

However, previewing his own opinion of how a pairing with Chimaev will play out, Costa described the AllStars MMA staple as a “dead man walking”.

“‘Gourmet Chen Chen’ (Khamzat Chimaev) has no chance, zero, no chance,” Paulo Costa told The Mac Life. “I’m going to destory him – dead man walking. Dead man walking right there in Chechnya. I come to f*ck you in your f*cking house, motherf*cker.”

“Training hard every single, I have no days off,” Paulo Costa explained. “Look at this face, look at this face. Look right here, ‘Gourmet Chen Chen’: the man who is going to kill you.”

Slated to make his return to the Octagon at UFC 294 in October, undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev is sure to earn a shot at middleweight gold with a win over Paulo Costa, per UFC color-commentator, Daniel Cormier.

Chimaev, the current number four ranked welterweight contender, has been sidelined since he took co-main event honors at UFC 279 back in September of last year against Kevin Holland, stopping the Californian with a first round D’Arce choke submission victory.

As for Costa, the Belo Horizonte native himself has yet to return since he featured on the main card of UFC 278 back in August, returning to the winner’s enclosure with a unanimous decision win over former undisputed champion, Luke Rockhold, with the Brazilian snapping a two-fight losing skid.

Khamzat Chimaev set to compete for a title with a win over Paulo Costa at UFC 294

According to former duel-weight champion, Cormier to boot, Chimaev would be undeniable for a shot at middleweight gold, should he dispatch Costa at UFC 294 in October.

“If he (Khamzat Chimaev) beats Paulo Costa, Khamzat Chimaev will have earned himself a title fight at 185 pounds,” Daniel Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “And I don’t think anyone can disagree with that. I don’t believe that beating Gilbert Burns, going up, and now beating Paulo Costa doesn’t get you a championship opportunity. It makes you the number one contender between Israel Adesanya and Dricus du Plessis.”

As for the aforenoted current champion, Adesanya, the Nigerian-Kiwi is expected to feature in the main event of UFC 293 in September in a return to Sydney, Australia – taking on either du Plessis, or the surging recent winner, Sean Strickland in a championship defense. 

Over the course of his Octagon tenure, Chechen-born finisher, Chimaev has turned in six consecutive victories. And ahead of his return at UFC 294, the AllStars MMA staple has claimed he will make Costa “cry” inside the Octagon during their Middle Eastern battle this October.

Paul Craig plans submission win over Khamzat Chimaev UFC he'd get triangle'd

Off the back of his impressive second round win over Dana White’s Contender Series alum, Andre Muniz over the weekend at UFC London, Scottish grappler, Paul Craig has claimed he would likely land a submission win over Khamzat Chimaev, as well as calling out the undefeated, Bo Nickal.

Snapping a two-fight losing skid to both Volkan Oezdemir, and Johnny Walker, the latter of which at the beginning of the year at UFC 283 in Brazil, Craig made a middleweight divisional bow over the weekend at The O2 Arena.

And snapping his losing run, Craig, who is likely set to land a ranking in the top-15 of the middleweight division come the release of the rankings update tomorrow, forced a second round stoppage win over fellow grappling talent, Muniz, laying waste to the Brazilian with a slew of ground elbow strikes for a TKO success.

Off the back of his win, Craig welcomed the prospect of fighting recent winner, Nickal, who has so far enjoyed a stunning run throughout his brief tenure under the UFC banner.

And as far as a potential future pairing with the undefeated, Chimaev in the future, Craig claimed he would be confident of submitting the Chechen-born finisher if they shared the Octagon.

“Everybody in middleweight’s got an opportunity to fight me,” Paul Craig told assembled media after UFC London. “If it is Khamzat (Chimaev) and he takes me down, there’s a good chance that he’s going to get triangle’d. My Jiu-Jitsu, I never had faith in my Jiu-Jitsu and it’s starting to build up.”

“People say, ‘Paul’s got good Jiu-Jitsu,’ but you always doubt your abilities,” Paul Craig explained. “This fight here, was one of the ones where I was like, ‘Right, if I’m a Jiu-Jitsu guy, I must be able to defend and I must be able to attack and I must be able to win [this] fight.’ I’m a Jiu-Jitsu guy who is dangerous in MMA.” (Transcribed by MMA News)
