Stephan Bonnar‘s spent much of the last three years in search of a win, and much of the last year focusing on one man: Krzysztof Soszynski.
After splitting two fights with Soszynski in the last five months, though, it appears that a rubber match to their series is not likely to happen in the near future, according to UFC president Dana White.
“Anything can happen, but not right now I wouldn’t say that,” he said. “I don’t think there’s any doubt Stephan won the fight. Stephan clearly won the fight. It was a fun, entertaining, exciting fight, but when isn’t Stephan Bonnar fun and entertaining?”
Filed under: UFC, NewsOn a card full of back-and-forth matchups, two Fight of the Night awards were handed to Chris Leben vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama and Stephan Bonnar vs. Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 116 Saturday in Las Vegas.
The other recipients of post-fight honors were Brock Lesnar for Submission of the Night and Gerald Harris for Knockout of the Night. All six competitors each received a $75,000 bonus for their efforts.
“In 10 years of being in the business i don’t believe I’ve seen guys deliver like they did tonight,” UFC president Dana White said at the post-fight press conference.

After finishing 10th out of over 2500 competitors in last week’s World Series of Poker, UFC fighter Mike Swick must be feeling pretty lucky. Either that, or he was not intimidated by my 0-3 record in Writer vs. Fighter and saw a chance for an easy victory. Whatever the reason, Swick was gracious enough to agree to face me in a UFC 116 prediction contest this afternoon, and for that I thank him.
I may have gotten smoked by “Babalu” Sobral in last week’s match-up, but I’m trying to stay positive. I figure it can only help me that I got Swick to make his predictions after he’d stayed up until 5 a.m. playing poker in Las Vegas, where he says he’s been doing “very well.”
Well Mr. Swick, prepare to have your fortunes changed. Maybe. Hopefully.

With three straight losses, Stephan Bonnar is feeling the pressure.
Despite UFC president Dana White’s statements in the past that Bonnar will always have a home in the organization thanks to his epic battle with Forrest Griffin in the finale of Season 1 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” a fourth straight loss would have most fighters staring at a pink slip.
His last setback was a controversial TKO loss thanks to a cut from an inadvertent headbutt against Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 110 in Sydney. Bonnar appealed that decision, hoping to have the loss overturned to a no contest. That appeal was denied, the loss stood and Bonnar now finds himself in a must-win situation in his rematch with Soszynski on Saturday at UFC 116.
“I don’t think (losing the appeal) adds any pressure,” Bonnar said. “I already feel a ton of pressure. Every fight I usually do. But this one here, I’m kind of looking at like do or die. I want to be aggressive, throw lots of punches and just do everything I can to win. Usually, the faster the pace of the fight, the better I do. So I’m looking forward to him pushing the pace.”
