The UFC has announced it will be returning to London in March, so, naturally, all of the UFC’s top English fighters want in on the card.

Add top-ranked UFC welterweight Leon Edwards to the list. Edwards is looking for a big fight that will finally get him the title opportunity he has been searching for. There has been some chatter of Edwards taking on former welterweight champ Tyron Woodley next. Talks have been ongoing, but nothing has been made official as of this writing.

Edwards recently took to Twitter to again call Woodley out, this time for a meeting on the March London card.

Get me on that London card @UFCEurope @ufc @TWooodley are you free champ?”

Woodley hasn’t fought since March of this year when he was defeated by Kamaru Usman, losing the 170-pound title. Usman dominated Woodley for nearly the entire fight to become the new king of the division. Now, Woodley is ready to get back to work in hopes of reclaiming his old throne. Of course, to do that, he’ll likely have to go through Edwards, who is on quite a run himself with an eight-fight win streak.

What do you think about Edwards’ callout of Woodley for UFC London?

Leon Edwards has been hinting at a fight with former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley for some time now. It seems that the UFC agrees with the matchup, as the Edwards camp claims they’re waiting on “T-Wood” to sign the fight contract.

According to a report from MMA Fighting’s Damon Martin, the Edwards camp has been in talks with the Las Vegas-based mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion for the past few months regarding a fight with Woodley. They’re simply waiting on Woodley to accept the fight.

“Spoke to Leon Edward’s manager today and he says they’ve spoken at length with the UFC about a fight against Tyron Woodley over the past 3 months but they are just waiting on Woodley to accept. Leon doesn’t want to take a step back so Woodley is the most logical choice for his next opponent.”

The fight certainly makes sense at this point in both men’s careers. Edwards has solidified himself as a top contender in the welterweight division and is just one big win away from earning a title shot. As for Woodley, he comes off a lopsided defeat to Kamaru Usman, where he dropped the 170-pound strap as a result.

If Woodley can put on an impressive performance against Edwards, he could jump right back into the title picture. Should Edwards be able to get past Woodley, it’d be almost impossible to deny him a shot at the title.

What do you think about Edwards targeting Woodley for his next fight? Who takes the potential matchup?

Leon Edwards looks set to return to the Octagon soon as he claims he’s been offered a fight with Tyron Woodley.

Edwards last defeated Rafael dos Anjos in July in an impressive unanimous decision victory and was campaigning for a title shot afterward. However, with Jorge Masvidal facing Nate Diaz this week at UFC 244 and current welterweight champion Kamaru Usman defending his title against Colby Covington at UFC 245 next month, “Rocky” has been in limbo for a while.

He even offered to be an alternate for both fights, only to be turned down by the promotion:

“When the fight got made, when Diaz vs. Masvidal [was made], I offered the UFC that I would stay ready just in case anything like this happened,” Edwards told SevereMMA.com (via MMA Fighting). “[UFC] said that, ‘No, it should be fine, you don’t need to.’ I kind of put all my focus into December, so I asked them again in case someone from Colby or Usman fell out, but they said no again this week.

“So, I’m aiming towards early next year probably. Woodley would be a good fight. Let’s just see how these next two fights pan out – Masvidal and Diaz, Usman and Colby – let’s see how they play out and then I want the number one spot, if not the title shot.”

Woodley vs. Edwards is a fight that’s been talked about a lot, especially with the former being the previous longtime welterweight champion. Edwards claims he was offered a fight with “The Chosen One” and that it would even take place as the co-main event for Conor McGregor’s proposed January 18 return.

While there is nothing signed yet, the Birmingham native is currently waiting for approval from Woodley’s side:

“If they give me Woodley, the talk is that it would be in America,” Edwards added. “They said to me this week that they offered Tyron Woodley the fight for January…the same date as Conor…the same card as Conor in January.

“They offered us that fight for the co-main, I said, ‘Yeah,’ and whatever, so [we’ll wait and see].”
