Kamaru Usman is willing to take on Leon Edwards for a title rematch in England.

This past Saturday, former UFC welterweight champion and pound-for-pound king Kamaru Usman got dethroned in a massive upset scored by Leon Edwards at UFC 278. While Usman lost out on the chance to add more records to his glittering resume, Edwards became only the second British champion in the promotion’s history.

Following the result, company president Dana White indicated a trilogy bout for Usman and Edwards would be next.

Kamaru Usman reacts to UFC 278 KO loss

In an interview with TMZ Sports, Usman shared his reaction after the devastating knockout loss at UFC 278.

“I’m feeling good, in good spirits,” Usman said. “It’s a fight and it happened. I had to go to the hospital to just get scanned and all that, just the formalities, I was in and out of there. But everything is good, everything is great. It was just, what a shot, it was a great shot, a great shot. I’m talking hail mary in the Super Bowl, last 10 seconds. That’s a great shot man. Hats off to Leon.”

When asked if it was hard to watch it again or if he was bothered by the memes on social media, Usman responded in the negative.

“No, it’s not hard at all. You know how many people I’ve done that to? It’s not hard at all. It happened. That’s the beautiful thing about this sport is, that happens but we forget when it was actually taking place in that fight. I’m not done at all. It’s almost like everyone is more sad about it than I am. Everyone’s more emotional about it than I am

Usman wants the trilogy fight with Leon Edwards in England

Considering what Usman was able to achieve in the UFC, a title rematch between the pair looks probable. Edwards had come out and said that he would like to defend the belt in his adopted homeland of England and Usman appears to be on the same page.

“I want to go to England. I’ve been feeling to go to England. I feel like England is my second home now. England is half Africa, people don’t know that but it’s half Africa. So, it’s time to go over there and entertain my English people.”

Newly-minted UFC welterweight champion, Leon Edwards has claimed that he would be “100 percent” willing to rematch Nate Diaz in a championship outing in the future – should the exiting Stockton veteran defeat Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 279 next month.

Edwards, who headlined UFC 278 on Saturday in Salt Lake City, Utah – turned in a spectacular rallying fifth round win over two-time opponent, champion, Kamaru Usman, launching with a hail mary left high kick to knockout the Auchi native and snap Usman’s run as division pacesetter since 2019.

Immediately linked with a potential title trilogy rubber match against Usman next, Leon Edwards is expected to reignite his rivalry with the now-former champion next year, with UFC president, Dana White floating a potential London return for the new titleholder, as part of what would come as a monstrous Wembley stadium debut for the organization.

Leon Edwards landed a clear-cut decision win over Nate Diaz in June of last year

The Birmingham native, who earned his title challenge against Usman back in June of last year with a unanimous decision win over the aforenoted, Diaz – insisted that he would “100 percent” grant the one-time lightweight title challenger a shot at welterweight gold should he defeat the unbeaten, Chimaev at UFC 279.

“Imagine the scenes – the scenes!” Leon Edwards told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “I really hope he does (beat Khamzat Chimaev), imagine the scenes. I would 100 percent give him (Nate Diaz) a shot as well. That would be – the scenes would be crazy. I would 100 percent give Nate the shot, man. ‘Cause Nate’s a G – I said it after the fight, he is who he is. He’s one of the guy’s – the game’s never changed him. If that does happen, then Nate’s definitely getting the shot.”

As well as a potential rematch with Diaz, Edwards, who welcomes an immediate championship trilogy with Usman, however, also floated the possibility of ending his long-standing rivalry with welterweight contender and past challenger, Jorge Masvidal.

UFC coior commentator, Joe Rogan has christened UFC 278 headliner, Leon Edwards’ breathtaking fifth round rallying high kick KO of welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman as the greatest in the sport’s history – as the former clinches Octagon gold from the jaws of defeat.

Edwards, who headlined UFC 278 last weekend in an undisputed welterweight title rematch with Auchi champion, Usman, avenged a December 2015 unanimous decision loss to the latter – stopping Usman’s dominant title reign with a thunderous left high kick in the final minute of their Salt Lake City rematch.

The Birmingham native was conceivably en route to another unanimous decision loss to Usman come the conclusion of their Vivint Arena main event, with the champion building up a considerable lead in the second, third, and fourth rounds.

However, with just over a minute remaining in the fifth and final round, disguising a left high kick behind a jab-straight combination, Leon Edwards caught a slipping Usman with a massive left kick, dropping the champion to the canvas immediately, unconscious.

With the victory, Edwards is now expected to attempt his first defense of welterweight gold in a championship trilogy rubber match with Usman next year – potentially on home soil in the U.K. – with UFC president, Dana White remaining coy on a potential Wembley debut for the organization.

Joe Rogan heaps praise on Leon Edwards following UFC 278 title win

Receiving major plaudits for his spectacular rallying victory, Edwards has, according to UFC color commentator, Rogan – turned in the greatest high kick knockout in the history of the sport – given the significance of his fight with ONX Labs trainee, Usman.

“That was one of the most spectacular head kick knockouts in the history of the sport – considering the stakes, considering the consequences,” Joe Rogan said post-UFC 278. “I mean, it’s flawless – flawless technique. … The way he (Leon Edwards) set it up with that left (hand), Kamaru (Usman) leaned to the right – perfect head kick, out cold.”

“Nothing compares, it’s the greatest head kick knockout in the history of the sport – with the most consequences, the most at stake, the most doubt, the most people counting him out, including us,” Joe Rogan explained. (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)
