If you had Mark Zuckerberg vs. Elon Musk in a cage match on your 2023 bingo card, you’re probably feeling pretty good about yourself right now.

In a bizarre twist that nobody saw coming, and one certainly nobody asked for, Facebook founder and META CEO Mark Zuckerberg answered Elon Musk’s challenge for a cage match. The two often embattled business moguls have caught the attention of the combat sports world as of late after trying their hand at Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Zuckerberg recently made headlines following a report from The New York Times claiming that ‘The Zuck’ was choked out while participating in a jiu-jitsu tournament. Zuckerberg went out of his way to debunk the report, suggesting that his alleged snoring was nothing more than “effortful grunting.”

The fast-rising feud between Zuckerberg and Musk started when the latter responded to a news report claiming that the Facebook founder was looking to launch an app called THREADS designed to compete with Musk’s most recent acquisition, Twitter. “I’m sure Earth can’t wait to be exclusively under Zuck’s thumb with no other options,” Musk quipped in response to the report.

One Twitter user responded, saying, “Better be careful @elonmusk I heard he does the ju jitsu now.” The Tesla Motors CEO snapped back, “I’m up for a cage match if he is lol.”

While everyone was under the impression that Musk was joking, Mark Zuckerberg certainly didn’t take it that way. “Send me location,” Zuckerberg replied on social media.

Are Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg Serious About a Cage Fight?

Since then, Musk and ‘The Zuck’ have continued to lob challenges at one another. Initially, Musk responded to Zuck’s short response with an even shorter one; “Vegas Octagon.” He followed that up by revealing his signature move in a fight. “I have this great move that I call ‘The Walrus,’ where I just lie on top of my opponent and do nothing.”

Though all of this seems like nothing more than a couple of billionaires looking for another way to entertain themselves, Alex Heath of The Verge suggested that the challenge is far more serious than expected and stems from Zuckerberg’s attempt to take a bite out of the Twitterverse.

Would you pay to see Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk fight inside the Octagon?

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was reportedly choked unconscious during a jiu-jitsu tournament last month.

The Meta CEO has garnered the attention of the combat sports community after video footage of him training in BJJ began making the rounds. Ready for the next step, ‘The Zuck’ reportedly entered a tournament last month and even walked out with a gold and silver medal, but not before experiencing some early adversity.

According to veteran BJJ practitioner and event referee Jose Lucas Costa da Silva, Zuckerberg lost consciousness and was snoring during an early matchup, forcing him to step in and stop the contest. Video of the aftermath hit social media and made it appear as though Zuckerberg was disputing the defeat. According to Costa, there was no argument between the two.

“There was no argument,” Costa told Bloody Elbow. “It was in Gi and he got choked out. That was the video you saw. I stopped it and he wanted to check with me about why I stopped it. He didn’t know what was happening, which was one of the reasons I stopped it. But he had started to snore and the rule set says that snoring is a version of a verbal tap.”

Mark Zuckerberg Disputes Report That He Was Choked Out at BJJ Tournament

If Mark Zuckerberg truly lost consciousness, his confusion and questioning of the stoppage are understandable, but Costa once again reiterated that there was no argument from the tech billionaire. He was simply trying to comprehend the rules with it being his first tournament.

“I was paying a lot of attention,” Costa laughed. “I was paying even more attention because it was Mark. He got caught in an Ezekiel and I waited, but he didn’t fight back. And I was waiting, but on the third snore, I had to stop the fight. He was very polite but he wanted to know how the rules work.”

Initially, Costa revealed that Zuckerberg had been slept in an interview with the New York Times. Getting wind of the report, the social media guru reached out to the publication alongside his BJJ coach to deny that he had been choked out during the event, suggesting that his snores were actually “effortful grunting.”

“After publishing our story, I heard from both Mark Zuckerberg and his Brazilian jujitsu coach,” NYT writer Joseph Bernstein tweeted. “They both insisted that Mr. Zuckerberg had *not* lost consciousness, and the coach said that the referee had mistaken his effortful grunting for snores.”

Earlier this month, Mark Zuckerberg had the MMA community on edge as it appeared the Facebook CEO had rented out the UFC APEX for his own private event.

As it turns out, the event was being used to test out a new partnership between the Las Vegas fight company and Meta, the parent company of Facebook, that will bring a virtual reality experience to fans starting with LFA 144 which aired on Friday night. Fans were given a virtual front-row seat via the Horizon Worlds app available on the Meta Quest 2 VR headset.

Fans Share Their Experience With UFC’s Newest VR Offering

Fans were quick to share their VR experience which allowed individuals sitting in the comfort of their own homes to enter the arena and sit down for an up-close look at the evening’s action.

Earlier in the week, Fight Pass VP Crowley Sullivan announced the partnership via a press release.

“We are excited to offer an unprecedented level of engagement for Fight Pass subscribers and MMA fans around the world by producing a live MMA event in virtual reality,” said Crowley Sullivan. (via MMA Junkie). “With Meta providing the VR platform and YBVR lending their production expertise, we’re confident this will be a great experience for fight fans.”

While the platform is still being optimized for the best possible viewing experience, fans online appear to be genuinely thrilled with the technology and the possibilities it brings.

Michael Bisping Mark Zuckerberg

Beloved UFC hall-of-fame member and former middleweight champion Michael Bisping has recently weighed in on the big debacle that was Mark Zuckerberg renting out the entire UFC Apex to watch UFC Vegas 61.

Zuckerberg showed the world that night that being rich does have its advantages, as he rented out the entire arena and closed it to the public, media, and even any of the fighters’ families that wanted to attend.

The night of fights was epic, and while the usual atmosphere of an electric crowd was gone that night, at least Mark Zuckerberg and his entourage had fun attending live.

Michael Bisping speaks on the Mark Zuckerberg situation

On his podcast Believe You Me, Michael Bisping commented on that night, and the effect a rich “nerd” like Zuckerberg could have on the sport.

“Mark Zuckerberg was in attendance. Pretty cool to see,” Bisping began. “They’re all good points, and this isn’t meant as an insult to him and it sounds like a meathead comment, but [more fans can get into the sport because of] someone that’s as nerdy as him.”

“He’s a tech genius. You’ve seen him,” Michael Bisping continued. “…He can be described as, quote-unquote, a bit of a nerd. But to see a guy like him who does have that influence, who has that wealth, who does have that power, and I don’t know what to think about Mark Zuckerberg, he’s a f—king nerd, let’s be honest, but he’s awesome because he’s there and he’s watching the UFC.”

Bisping would go on to claim that a man with that much wealth, power, and intelligence could really bring a different type of exposure to the UFC brand.

“I believe this will open up, potentially, another realm of people because MMA is hugely and wildly popular, but there’s still skeptics, there’s critics, and there’s still people that won’t give it a shot. But seeing someone that’s clearly wildly intelligent as he is, to be an admirer of the sport, and his wife is there enjoying it, it’s only going to bring in more fans.”

What are your thoughts on Mark Zuckerberg’s interest in MMA, and Michael Bisping’s response?
