The rivalry between UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley and top-ten contender Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera is alive and well.

Following his impressive second-round knockout of Aljamain Sterling to claim the 135-pound crown at UFC 292, Sean O’Malley immediately called for a rematch with Vera, the only man to defeat him inside the Octagon. In their August 2020 meeting, Vera scored a first-round TKO over O’Malley after ‘Sugar’ suffered a leg injury in the opening minutes.

Sean O’Malley has been chomping at the bit to run it back ever since.

Now that he holds the bantamweight title, O’Malley may have the pull to make the long-awaited rematch happen, even if Vera just recently bounced back from a split decision loss to Cory Sandhagen in March.

Everything appeared to be full steam ahead once ‘Sugar’ wrapped the gold around his waist in Boston, suggesting a fight with Vera in December at UFC 296 would be next. We have neither seen nor heard from them since.

Until now.

This bitch talking about boxing, defend that belt mcgregor wannabe,” Vera stated on social media, sending a message to Sean O’Malley.

Quickly, the bantamweight champion responded saying, “Lolz I ain’t tryin to box. Shits to ez [,] I wana fight your dumb ass.”

No official announcement has been made regarding Sean O’Malley’s return to the Octagon or who it could come against.

Sean O’Malley Has Multiple Contenders More Deserving than ‘Chito’ Vera

A rematch against Marlon Vera has a built-in story that would be easy for the UFC to sell, but there are far more deserving fighters in the stacked lightweight division, including No. 2 ranked contender Merab Dvalishvili. The Machine’ is currently sitting on a nine-fight win streak, his last victory being a decisive unanimous decision against former titleholder Petr Yan.

If O’Malley isn’t jumping directly into a rematch with Aljamain Sterling, a fight against Dvalishvili is certainly the one to make, but ‘Sugar’ seems far more interested in taking the easy road. That’s not a knock on Vera, but you’d be hard-pressed to convince anyone that ‘Chito’ would be a tougher fight compared to the ‘Funk Master’ and Merab Dvalishvili.

Marlon Vera claims Sean O'Malley is backing out of a UFC 296 title fight rematch

Marlon Vera has revealed he is currently preparing for the possibility of a bantamweigh title fight rematch with incumbent champion, Sean O’Malley at UFC 296 in December, however, has claimed the Montana native, who initially called for the title re-run is “backing out” of a championship showdown.

Vera, who most recently featured on the main card of UFC 292 back in August – akin to newly-minted champion, O’Malley, turned in a close, unanimousd decision win over common-foe, Pedro Munhoz.

And in the time since, the Ecuadorian has been lined up as an ideal candidate to challenge for bantamweight spoils first and foremost by O’Malley – who handpicked the Chone native as a potential opponent.

Sharing a distinct history with Dana White’s Contender Series alum, O’Malley, Vera is the sole fighter to defeat the outspoken former during his professional career, handing him a first round TKO loss via a slew of late ground strikes in their 2020 grudge match at the UFC Apex facility.

Marlon Vera unsure if Sean O’Malley will rematch him at UFC 296 in December

And despite talking up the possibility of a rematch with Vera recently in a bid to avenge his sole career loss – which he claims he lost on purpose in order to set up a future re-run, O’Malley, as per Vera, is now “backing out” of a December fight.

“As of now, they [the UFC] haven’t said anything yet,” Marlon Vera told assembled media during a Q&A session ahead of Noche UFC. “I’m preparing as [if] I am fighting in December. You know, why not? I mean, the guy (Sean O’Malley) was talking about fighting and stuff like that. Now, he’s backing out. I guess when you’re champion, you can call the shots. So, let’s see what that b*tch wants to do.”

Winning undisputed title spoils atop the above-mentioned UFC 292 card last month, O’Malley ended the lengthy title reign of the dominant Aljamain Sterling with an early second round TKO in Boston, Massachusetts to mint himself as the undisputed bantamweight champion.

Sean O'Malley claims he lost to Marlon Vera on purpose UFC title rematch

Recently minted undisputed bantamweight champion, Sean O’Malley has made the outlandish claim that his sole professional mixed martial arts loss came by his entire own volition – insisting he allowed arch-rival, Marlon Vera to land a first round TKO win over him in 2020, in order to setup a potential title re-run at UFC 296 later this year.

O’Malley, the newly-crowned undisputed bantamweight champion, headlined UFC 292 back in August at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, defeating the incumbent, Aljamain Sterling with a stunning second round TKO victory.

The victory saw O’Malley become just the second Dana White’s Contender Series alum to land Octagon spoils, after light heavyweight striker, Jamahal Hill landed gold back in January in Brazil with a unanimous decision win over Glover Teixeira.

Sean O’Malley claims he allowed Marlon Vera defeat him back in 2020

Vowing to return to the Octagon before the close of the year in a bid to headline UFC 296 in December, O’Malley, whose sole loss in MMA came back in 2020 courtesy of a first round TKO loss to the above-mentioned Ecuadorian finisher, Vera, claimed he lost the bout the Chone native “on purpose”.

“I never lost sleep over this fight [with Marlon Vera],” Sean O’Malley told MMA Fighting during a recent interview. “I’ve actually been playing chess a long time. I lost that fight on purpose, just so I could go out there and knock out Aljo (Aljamain Sterling). And have that [rematch with Vera] be my biggest fight. Rematch.”

“If I got to pick if I was running the show, I would say yes [a rematch with Vera was next], simply because ‘Chito’ is the biggest fight next, not because he had a beautiful performance over Pedro (Munhoz). That’s not the case. If I fight ‘Chito’ next, it’s because that’s what I want and that’s the biggest fight. I’m in the fight business and I want big fights.”

Atop that pay-per-view return to the TD Garden for the promotion, O’Malley struck undisputed bantamweight gold with a stunning second round ground strikes TKO win over dominant titleholder, Aljamain Sterling – defeating the Uniondale native with a second frame finish.

And in the immediate aftermath of his victory, O’Malley issued a call out to Vera for a title fight rematch at UFC 296 in December, before later claiming if the Chone native attempted to dictate his future, he would then switch focus to a defense against former two-weight champion, Henry Cejudo.

Minting himself as the new undisputed bantamweight champion last weekend at UFC 292, Sean O’Malley has opended as a significant betting favorite to avenge his sole professional career loss, in a potential rematch with Ecuadorian finisher, Marlon Vera.

O’Malley, who headlined UFC 292 over the couse of the weekend at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, managed to land the undisputed bantamweight title with a stunning second round TKO win over dominant gold holder, Aljamain Sterling.

As for Vera, the Chone native returned to the winner’s enclosure in the main card opener of the same event, defeating common-foe, Pedro Munhoz in a hotly-contested unanimous decision win in ‘Bean Town’.

And in the immediate aftermath of his title victory, Montana native, Sean O’Malley called for a title defense re-run with Jason Parillo trainee, Vera, suggesting a matchup as soon as UFC 296 in December.

Sean O’Malley opens as betting favorite to defeat Marlon Vera

With odds for a potential championship rematch between O’Malley and Vera already available, the newly-minted gold holder has opened as an impressive -198 betting favorite to defeat Ecuador native, Vera, who is sitting as a +164 betting underdog.

A host of markets and bookies are already taking wagers and punts on a future fight between O’Malley and Vera, including real money online casino Canada – as the newly-minted gold holder attempting to get off the mark in the wake of his championship reign.

Initially meeting back in 2020, O’Malley, then in the midst of his initial run through bantamweight contenders, suffered an eventual first round ground strikes TKO loss to Vera, who capitalized after landing a debilitating leg kick on the Montana native, limiting his movement throughout the frame early on.

Following his win, Vera used his momentum to land a high-profile fight with former featherweight champion and former bantamweight title chaser, Jose Aldo, ultimately dropping a decision loss to the Manaus native.

However, in the time since, Vera has landed wins in five of his last six, including Saturday’s judging win over Munhoz. Seeing his four-fight winning run halted earlier this year, Vera was outworked by Cory Sandhagen over the course of five rounds, having landed prior decision wins over both Davey Grant, and Rob Font – as well as brutal high-kick KO wins over both former champions, Frankie Edgar, and Dominick Cruz.

17-1(1) as a professional, in the midst of a six-fight undefeated run since his first career loss against Vera, O’Malley managed to earn his title clash with Sterling off the back of a close split decision win over former undisputed champion, Petr Yan in October of last year.

Along with initial odds favoring O’Malley in a title fight rematch with Vera, the latter has also gazumped other bantamweight contenders as the favorite to first and foremost face the newly-crowned titleholder in his first outing as champion – beating out the likes of Merab Dvalishvili, Aljamain Sterling, Cory Sandhagen, Henry Cejudo, and Petr Yan.

At the time of publication, markets are offering Vera as short as a +140 to come as O’Malley’s first opponent during the Dana White’s Contender Series alum’s first walk as undisputed bantamweight champion.

Landing undisputed bantamweight gold last night in the main event of UFC 292, newly-minted division champion, Sean O’Malley has already set his sights on his first target, calling for a hasty rematch with fellow card winner and former-foe, Marlon Vera at UFC 296 in December.

Headlining his first pay-per-view event under the banner of the promotion, surging striker, O’Malley clinched the undisputed bantamweight crown with a spectacular second round finish of the dominant defending champion, Aljamain Sterling.

Managing to avoid takedown attempts from the Uniondale wrestling ace throughout a cagey first round, O’Malley dropped the defending bantamweight champion with a massive counter right straight early in the second round, faceplanting Sterling before following up with well-placed ground strikes to earn his bantamweight title victory to a raucous reception at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.

And following his title-clinching win, Montana native, O’Malley, who was urged to first defend his title against either streaking contenders, Merab Dvalishvili, or Cory Sandhagen, however, issued a direct call out to Ecuadorian contender, Vera – whom is the sole professional to defeat O’Malley throughout his career.

“I said going into this fight, it only takes one mistake against me,” Sean O’Malley told Joe Rogan during his post-fight interview after UFC 292. “I don’t even know if that was a mistake – I’m just that f*cking good. This is just the beginning of the ‘Suga’ era, I’m running this sh*t until 2035, baby. Did ‘Chito’ (Marlon Vera) win? Was it boring. Probably. I’ll whoop ‘Chito’s ass in December in Vegas at T-Mobile. Let’s f*cking go.”

Himself opening the main card of UFC 292 last night in Boston, Massachusetts, Vera managed to turn in a unanimous decision win over common-foe, Pedro Munhoz in a tightly-contested matchup.
