Top middleweight contender Jack Hermansson has confirmed he suffered a “broken eye socket” in his five-round decision defeat at the hands of Marvin Vettori at UFC Vegas 16. ‘The Italian Dream’ seized his short-notice opportunity opposite the #4 ranked middleweight Hermansson last night.
Vettori dropped Hermansson with a left hand early, and briefly threatened with a guillotine as the Swede survived the first-frame. In round two he was able to dictate the pace and out grapple Hermansson. ‘The Joker’ enjoyed much more success in round three and it looked like the tide was turning. However, a fired up Vettori emerged for round four and both men went to war. It was more of the same from Vettori and Hermansson who let it all hang out in the final round before the judges awarded Vettori the unanimous decision win.
Following his defeat, Hermansson looked pretty busted up and was transported to the hospital where it was confirmed he suffered a broken toe and orbital bone. ‘The Joker’ took to social media from his hospital bed to confirm his injuries and thank his fans for their unwavering support.
“Broken toe and broken eyesocket but not a broken spirit,” Hermansson wrote. “The goal remains the same Thank you for your support. #thejokerdominates”

‘The Italian Dream’, Marvin Vettori has called for an immediate shot at UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya after picking up the biggest win of his career at UFC Vegas 16 last night.
Vettori was supposed to compete against ‘Jacare’ Souza at UFC 256 on December 12 but stepped into the UFC Vegas 16 main event slot opposite Jack Hermansson after Kevin Holland was forced out of the event due to a positive COVID-19 test.
Over five rounds he beat Hermansson to the punch and ultimately picked up a pretty convincing five-round victory against the #4 ranked UFC middleweight. Speaking immediately after the fight Vettori called for a bout with Paulo Costa who is coming off a failed title bid – check out what he had to say about the Brazilian here.
By the time he had reached the UFC Vegas 16 post-fight press conference Vettori had changed his mind about fighting Costa or anyone in the top five and began making his case for an immediate shot at ‘Stylebender’, he said.
“Before I called out ‘Borrachinha,’ but to be honest with you, (expletive) ‘Borrachinha.’ He just came out of a crazy loss. Why would I even fight him? I want to go straight to the title, man. I’ll be honest, I like the fight, but I feel like the top five there’s no opposition. There’s no real opposition.
“(Jared) Cannonier just lost, Darren Till is – I don’t even think he’s top five – ‘Borrachinha’ just lost brutally and Jack was No. 4,” Vettori added. (Robert) Whittaker wants to just enjoy Christmas with his kids, but I don’t blame him it just doesn’t really seem like he wants to fight for the title.”
Vettori is not convinced Adesanya will move up to 205lbs to fight Jan Blachowicz next. The Italian is determined to get a rematch against the champ who edged out a split decision win when the pair squared off in April 2018
“Israel is full of (expletive),” Vettori said. “He was like, ‘Oh, I don’t think I will ever see Marvin again, he will never will make it to the title.’ Well guess what mother(expletive)? I’m here. So, he thinks he has it all figured out. He has nothing figured out. I know his true colors. I met him a few times. I fought him. I knew his true colors. I want that fight.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Marvin ‘The Italian Dream’ Vettori has seized the short-notice opportunity with arguably the biggest standout performance of his career. The Kings MMA mainstay switched from an early approach — on his way to a unanimous decision win over Jack ‘The Joker’ Hermansson.
The real story of the first-round came with both men hoping to find a home for counter straight shots, mostly in the pocket. Landing the most significant shot of the frame, Vettori dropped Hermansson with a left hand, and briefly threatened with a guillotine as the Swede survived the first-frame.
With an aggresive approach to the opening exchanges of the second, Hermansson attempted to score a high-crotch single-leg, with Vettori defending expertly, event sweeping the #4 ranked contender, winding up in full-guard. In a much more comfortable finish to the round, Hermansson landed a good knee in the clinch, finding a notably heavy breathing Vettori’s mid-section.
Likely stealing the third-round, Hermansson managed to let his hands go with much more success midway through this headliner, with Vettori still breathing quite heavily. Hermansson swinging somewhat wild, however.
While Vettori seemed much more composed and energetic in the fourth than in the third, it semes Hermansson may have still scored a 10-9 with his cleaner boxing. Vettori’s shots also seem to have waned in effect compared to the first round.
Blasting through the final round with the same pace as set in the prior four, Vettori and Hermansson battled to the distance, with the Italian scoring a unanimous decision win in a short-notice appearance. Following his victory, the soon to be minted top-five contender called for a pairing with recent middleweight title challenger, Paulo ‘The Eraser’ Costa.
Below, check out the highlights from Hermansson’s exciting war with Vettori.
