After his showing this past weekend (Sat. December 8, 2018) at UFC 223, many are already putting UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway in the GOAT dicussion.

Holloway successfully defended his 145-pound title against Brian Ortega in the main event. The Hawaiian was pretty dominant in the match-up, clearly the superior striker through the four rounds they shared the Octagon. Ortega refused to go down, but was battered pretty badly. In fact, he likely made it through half of the fight on heart alone.

Recently, there has been talk of Holloway potentially moving up to lightweight. That would mean he’d be facing the likes of top-ranked 155 pounders such as Kevin Lee. Lee will compete this weekend at UFC on FOX 31.

Speaking on “The MMA Hour,” Lee discussed Holloway being tossed into the discussion for GOAT. Lee said people throw fighters into that mix way too fast nowadays (via MMA Mania):

“I feel like in time maybe people will stop doing that. We are talking about something bigger than that. I feel like people are too short-sighted. You win one fight and all of a sudden you are the GOAT,” Lee said.

“And this is no disrespect to Max at all. Max is one of the very few fighters in the game that I got a lot of respect for and actually consider a good friend. He looked amazing, really. We are all kind of the same generation. I feel like me and him both are in the new generation of fighter.

“He set the bar last week and it has given me a bit more motivation, a bit more fuel to go out there and put a show on. But, I feel like that’s not the way you get it done. That’s not the way you become a superstar by automatically let’s just bump up.”

Lee went on to compare the situation to that of UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Immediately after his win over Conor McGregor in October, Khabib called out Floyd Mayweather Jr. for a boxing fight:

“You see the same thing with Khabib. I told this to Ali, you win one fight and all of a sudden you want to fight Floyd Mayweather for $100 million. Come on, this is not how this game works. It’s a marathon.

“Keep putting in the work, keep taking out No. 1 contenders and then maybe you will get there eventually. You talk about guys like Georges St-Pierre who had to defend the title nine or ten times before they started saying that. I feel that is the way the sport should really be. Let’s get back to the real sport, let’s get back to, we’ve already seen it.

“Why do you want Khabib to fight Floyd? It’s not even a great fight. Why do you want Max to come up and fight somebody like Khabib or like me? It’s unfair for him to even have to, that’s a lot of weight. People do not understand, we are competitors.

“We are just too big and too strong. It’s too big of a disadvantage. I feel like it needs to be a clear playing field, and then that’s when you really see the best fight.”

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar believes he’s next in line for a featherweight title opportunity.

Edgar was set to challenge 145-pound king Max Holloway at March’s UFC 222. However, Holloway was forced off the card with an injury, and replaced by Brian Ortega. Ortega won the fight via first-round knockout, becoming the only man in MMA history to have finished Edgar inside the cage. Ortega then earned the next shot at the featherweight crown but lost to Holloway via fourth-round TKO over the weekend (Sat. December 8, 2019).

Now, Edgar, who is recovering from a torn bicep injury, is just about ready to get back into the Octagon. When he does, he believes he’s still next in line for a 145-pound title opportunity. He had this to say on the “Ariel Helwani MMA Show” earlier today (Mon. December 10, 2018):

“I think I’m next in line, I think we should go back to that fight (Holloway). I feel like Holloway, he doesn’t owe me anything, but I think we wanna get that one done.”

Edgar noted he has already reached out to UFC President Dana White, and the pair have agreed to speak soon on what’s next for him:

“I said, ‘I gave my shot up, maybe it wasn’t the best idea, but I thought I was gonna win that fight, it didn’t go my way – ‘ And he said we’ll see. He said we’ll talk next week, we’ll see what happens, and we’ll see how it plays out.”

There has been a lot of talk about the possibility of Holloway moving up to lightweight next. White has said he’d like the Hawaiian to move up to 155 pounds, and Holloway is certainly interested in the superfights the division has to offer.

As for Edgar, he’s one of the last big match-ups available to “Blessed” at 145 pounds before a potential division change.

Conor McGregor’s training partner has defend the former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion in the featherweight GOAT conversation. For years, many people called McGregor the greatest of all-time in the division once he KO’d former champ Jose Aldo in just seconds in their first fight.

However, since leaving the division, many have shifted that talk towards Max Holloway. The UFC featherweight champion is fresh off his latest title defense at the UFC 231 pay-per-view event. Holloway retained his UFC featherweight title over Brian Ortega in the headliner by doctor stoppage.

This win extended his winning streak to twelve straight with two straight title defenses since winning the title from Aldo. Following the fight, Holloway downplayed this talk of him being the GOAT while shifting the attention to Aldo.

This is when the training partner of McGregor, Dillon Danis, chimed in on this discussion by taking to his official Twitter account. He gave his take on this talk and noted that McGregor should be considered the GOAT.

He wrote, “They do Conor dirty by saying max is the best FW ever… Conor is, he beat poirier, aldo, mendez AND max and more.”

Holloway and McGregor have fought each other before as their first fight went down at 145lbs in 2013. At the time, Conor did beat Holloway by decision. Since then, fight fans have been calling for a rematch due to both fighters growing into the elite competitors that they are known today.

Featherweight king Max Holloway continues to impress, as he has never looked better then he did last (Dec. 8, 2018) night in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Welcome to the “Blessed Era.” Holloway was absolutely brilliant in his defense over No.1 Brian Ortega. He masterfully picked the unbeaten Gracie black belt apart for the majority of the 20-minute affair.

Although many fans and media members agree that the 27-year-old Hawaiian is the greatest 145-pounder to have ever graced the Octagon, Holloway respectfully disagrees. He believes one of his former foe Jose Aldo is the true featherweight GOAT. He is honored to be mentioned in the same sentence as ‘Junior’:

“I still believe the greatest featherweight of all time is Jose Aldo,” Holloway told reporters post-fight at UFC 231. “When I’m 30 or 31 or his age then you ask me if I’m the greatest featherweight of all-time if I’m still here.

Not the Goat Yet?

The Hawaiian could make a strong case for the featherweight GOAT if he wanted to. He currently holds a few divisional records like longest winning streak, most wins, most stoppages and more. The key area where Aldo stands out is in title defenses. He successfully defended the 145- pound strap six straight times.

Holloway believes he could eventually catch and pass Aldo. He just needs more time.

“I’ve got to just keep winning, keep doing my job and keep winning fights and let you guys keep talking about it,” Holloway said. “Personally, for me, I think Jose still is. I’m chasing him. He set the bar, and I’m still chasing that bar, and I’ve got to break it. People are saying this is a new era. I guess I’m setting the bar for the new era. When ‘The Blessed Era’ is here, ‘The Blessed Era’ is going to be in full effect.”

For now, all Holloway can do is keep fighting. As for what division he will be competing in moving forward, no one is quite certain. UFC President Dana White has expressed a strong desire to see Holloway move up in weight. The champ, however, does seem lukewarm to the idea.

“At the end of the day I just want to be the pound-for-pound No. 1,” Holloway said. “I’m the champion, and I keep defending my belt, I’ll be No. 1. If it’s up a weight class, it’s up, If it’s defending my throne. If I get to fight one of my good friends, ‘The Daddest Man on the Plant’ (Daniel Cormier) for that title, bring it on Kung Fu Panda. I’ve got you, ‘DC.’ I can see him very soon.”
