Conor McGregor is determined to prove he, not Max Holloway, is the best boxer in MMA and insists he will do just that when he squares off against Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 this weekend.

Holloway wowed fans and fighters with his performance against Calvin Kattar at UFC Fight Island 7. The former featherweight champ displayed his elite-level boxing skills to beat up Kattar over five rounds to claim a lopsided decision win.

In the fifth and final round, ‘Blessed’ began talking to the commentators. He told Daniel Cormier, Dan Hardy, and Jon Anik he was the best boxer in MMA while simultaneously dodging punches from Kattar.

McGregor praised Holloway’s performance in a recent interview with The Mac Life, he said.

“I thought it was a solid performance. He fought an up and comer and he done well. I was actually doing an interview there and he skateboarded by the window, so he’s obviously hanging around. Yeah, fair play to him. More power to him. He’s definitely in the pipeline for a bout against me, for sure. I would happily rematch Max and after a performance like that, he’s put himself right up there.

“He’s only fought at 155 once,” McGregor added. “He fought against Dustin and he was out-powered but he could certainly do it, and against other lightweights you never know but me and him, the rematch would be 155 for sure.

McGregor’ reconnected with his childhood trainers at Crumlin Boxing Club a few years ago and has taken his boxing to another level since then. The Irishman insists he is the best boxer in MMA and will prove that against Poirier at UFC 257.

“I’m certainly more stable and connected to the floor and then I can flash it up,” McGregor said. “I can go through all styles, I can paint many pictures inside that Octagon. It’s just another wrinkle in my beautiful suit so I look forward to getting in and showcasing all my skills. Boxing is certainly prevalent but I’m flying through the air also. I’m ready for it all.

“[Max] is not the best boxer and I’ll prove that on Sunday,” McGregor concluded. “Watch, I’ll end up kicking bleedin’ Dustin in the head like the last one. I had the boxing crew with me and I end up kicking Donald in the head and breaking his face with my shoulders. I have so many shots and it will just come out magically on the night, so we’ll see what happens.”

Who do you think is the best boxer? Conor McGregor or Max Holloway?

Alexander Volkanovski On Max Holloway: ‘He Doesn’t Look Like That In Front Of Me’

UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski believes a trilogy with Max Holloway doesn’t go differently at all.

Holloway made headlines for his masterful performance against Calvin Kattar that resulted in a lopsided unanimous decision win in the UFC Fight Island 7 headliner this past weekend.

It led to calls for a trilogy fight with Volkanovski as despite Holloway being 0-2 against the champion, many feel this version of “Blessed” is more than capable of coming out on top — especially as many believe he should have won the rematch at UFC 251 last summer.

However, as far as Volkanovski is concerned, that version of Holloway was always there. He just happened to shut him down on two occasions.

“I was definitely watching, and yeah Max put on a good show,” Volkanovski said on Submission Radio. “I knew he would get the win. He put on the pace, and yeah, Kattar just couldn’t keep up. So, it was a good showing.

“He doesn’t look like that in front of me, plain and simple. And I don’t mean that as disrespect, but I shut him down, and that’s plain and simple. He was breaking records with numbers, and he’s always a high-volume fighter, he’s always looking good when there’s other people in front of him. But when it’s me in front of him, I just don’t let him do his thing. But in saying that, he did definitely put on a good performance, and I’m gonna credit him for that. But at the same time, he don’t look like that in front of me.”

Volkanovski is currently set to defend his title against Brian Ortega in a fight slated for UFC 260. However, he still doesn’t feel a trilogy with Holloway afterwards makes sense — even after the latter’s performance this past weekend.

That said, he isn’t ruling it out completely.

“They were keen before he even fought yesterday,” Volkanovski added. “They were obviously talking about a trilogy. Being 0-2, it doesn’t really make sense. That’s why Max moved on, that’s why Max went and fought yesterday, because he knew that it just does not make sense. And that’s why obviously the UFC put Ortega in front of me. So, we need to move on.

“Is it going to be further down the track? Look, I’m not gonna say that’s not gonna happen. I believe that Max is doing what he needs to do to stay a number-one contender, and if we have to meet again, we have to meet again. But at the same time, there’s going to be a different opponent in front of me, and that’s what I’m gonna focus on. But yeah, we’ll see what happens.”

Do you believe this is a different version of Holloway? Or was it the same and Volkanovski just shut him down?

Khabib Nurmagomedov Thinks Max Holloway Hasn’t Hit His Prime Yet

It’s fair to say Khabib Nurmagomedov was impressed by the performance of Max Holloway.

Holloway enjoyed arguably the best performance of his career after a lopsided unanimous decision win over Calvin Kattar in the UFC Fight Island 7 headliner this past weekend.

Many observers likened the performance to that of Muhammad Ali as calls increased for a trilogy fight with current UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski.

And as far as Nurmagomedov is concerned, Holloway — who just turned 29 — is yet to reach his prime.

“I think about Max, he is already one of the best to ever compete in MMA,” Nurmagomedov said in a recent interview on Fight Island (via Middle Easy). “He’s one of the best, and maybe, probably he is the best featherweights of all time. I think it was his best performance. And when we look at Max, he’s not old. He has a lot of fights in the UFC, but he’s how old? 28, 29 something like this?

“I think his prime time is coming. It’s not come yet. I think this year or maybe next year is going to be his prime time. It was not when he was champion. I think his time is going to come, he’s going stay focused, doing everything that he has to do… I think his time’s going to come maybe the end of this year, maybe next year. It was his best performance. I believe he has potential to be more of a great fighter than he already is.”

There was one moment in the fight where Holloway was talking to the commentary team and declared himself the best boxer in the UFC all while avoiding strikes from a battered Kattar.

So what did Nurmagomedov think of Holloway’s claim?

“About the best boxer, I’m not sure, but he’s one of the best for sure, and his cardio, I think he has very good cardio, very good chin, and now he’s experienced,” Nurmagomedov added. “It was his best performance, but in the future he has a couple years to show it and maybe be the best fighter of all time.”

Was Nurmagomedov impressed enough to come out of retirement and potentially face Holloway? That remains to be seen for now.

Do you agree with Nurmagomedov about Holloway still being yet to reach his prime?

Joe Rogan

UFC commentator and popular podcaster Joe Rogan heaped praise on former featherweight champion Max Holloway following his unanimous decision win over top contender Calvin Kattar this past weekend.

Holloway looked flawless when recording his first UFC win in three fights to re-establish himself as the number one contender at 145lbs. ‘Blessed’ was able to land consistently throughout the fight and even managed to hurt Kattar on several occasions before picking up a lopsided win on the judge’s cards.

Rogan was super impressed by Holloway’s performance and took to social media to heap praise on the former champ while also paying tribute to Kattar who showed true grit in defeat.

“Legit superhuman performance by @blessedmma. I am truly blown away,” Rogan wrote. “He was already one of the best fighters in the sport and he reached a completely new level tonight. The combinations, the angles, the volume, the octagon IQ… it was completely off the charts. So interesting that he didn’t even spar for this camp. That was about as impressive a performance as I’ve ever seen, and hats off to @calvinkattar for being one of the toughest motherfuckers alive and a complete savage. Very few men could have weathered that barrage like he did.”

After this win Holloway is now set for another shot at the featherweight title. ‘Blessed’ is unlucky to be without a title after seemingly beating Alexnader Volkanovski at UFC 251 only for the judges to declare Volkanovski the winner.

According to reports Volkanovski is set to make the second defence of his title against Brian Ortega at UFC 260 on March 27.

Ortega looked sensational when he returned to the Octagon for the first time in two years when he fought ‘The Korean Zombie’ at UFC Fight Island 6 in October.

‘T-City’ boxed his way to victory over five rounds against one of the best 145lb fighters on the planet.

Prior to that Ortega fell short when he squared off against Holloway for the featherweight title in 2018. He’ll be hoping for a better outcome in his second UFC title bid.

Do you agree with Joe Rogan? Did Max Holloway put on a “superhuman” performance at UFC Fight Island 7?
