On Saturday night, No. 2 ranked bantamweight Petr Yan looked to get back into the win column after dropping back-to-back split decisions against Sean O’Malley and reigning 135-pound champion Aljamain Sterling. Standing in his way is No. 4 ranked competitor Merab Dvalishvili. Riding an eight-fight win streak, ‘The Machine’ was intent on getting the biggest win of his MMA career and solidifying his opportunity to challenge for the bantamweight title.

Both fighters came out for the opening round intent on setting a frantic pace. Dvalishvili repeatedly shot for takedowns, but Yan did a great job of staying on his feet. Less than a minute to go, Yan rushed in for his own takedown attempt, but Dvalishvili quickly reversed the position and made ‘No Mercy’ pay for it with a series of strikes as the opening round came to a close.

After dominating through the first round, Dvalishvili picked up right where he left off in the second, beating Yan to the punch and battering the former two-time UFC champion’s leg. That dominance continued through the third as Dvalishvili’s pace never once waned as he brilliantly mixed his striking and takedown attempts. Merab Dvalishvili continued to dominate throughout the championship rounds, continuing his impressive pace as Yan found it difficult to muster any real offense.

Living up to his nickname, ‘The Machine’ set a new record, shooting for an incredible 49 takedown attempts during the 25-minute affair.

Official Result: Merab Dvalishvili def. Petr Yan via unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45)

Things got heated between Petr Yan and Merab Dvalishvili on Friday ahead of their UFC Fight Night main event clash scheduled for Saturday night.

The two top-five bantamweight standouts will meet inside the Octagon in a potential title eliminator at The Theater at Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas. Ahead of the highly anticipated matchup, the 135-pound standouts went face-to-face for the final time and things got a little chippy between the two. In the video clip, which you can see below, Dvalishvili can be heard calling his opponent a “b*tch” as they stood side-by-side. Petr Yan then shoved Dvalishvili by the throat.

The fighters were quickly separated to prevent any further incident as Merab Dvalishvili flashed a smile, clearly amused by the fact that he got under his opponent’s skin.

Merab Dvalishvili Enters Fight with Petr Yan as a Moderate Underdog Despite Eight-Fight Win Streak

‘The Machine’ will enter the biggest fight of his MMA career riding an eight-fight win streak dating back to 2018. That run includes wins over John Dodson, Cody Stamann, Marlon Moraes, and Jose Also. Despite that, Dvalishvili enters the bout a moderate +220 underdog. That number is especially surprising when you consider that Petr Yan has lost three of his last four contests.

Of course, those losses were all scrutinized by the MMA community, the first being a fourth-round disqualification following an illegal knee to opponent Aljamain Sterling at UFC 259. ‘No Mercy’ bounced back with a win over Cory Sandhagen, but has since lost back-to-back bouts against Sterling and No. 1 ranked bantamweight contender Sean O’Malley. Yan found himself on the wrong side of heavily-debated split decisions in both matchups.

Former UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley says withdrawing from his title defense opposite Merab Dvalishvili was never an option.

O’Malley was forced to relinquish his grip on the crown at 135 pounds in his second defense, which headlined last month’s UFC 306 (Noche UFC) pay-per-view inside the Sphere in Las Vegas.

Six months on from an emphatic five-round display to exact revenge on Marlon “Chito” Vera in Miami, “Sugar” had a more difficult 25-minute experience when sharing the Octagon with Dvalishvili.

The Georgian utilized his relentless pressure and smothering grappling game to secure the decision victory, extending his winning run to 11 straight fights and completing his championship ambitions in the process.

In the aftermath of the result, O’Malley revealed a long spell on the sidelines awaited him, having fought through a torn labrum at UFC 306.

O’Malley Doesn’t Regret Fighting Through Injury, Expects To ‘Whoop’ Dvalishvili In Rematch

During an appearance on the debut episode of The Ariel Helwani Show on Uncrowned, O’Malley reflected on the disappointing end to his short title reign in Las Vegas last month.

In terms of the injury he competed with, “Sugar” insisted that withdrawing and delaying his second defense was not a possibility, partly down to his confidence when it came to having superiority over “The Machine.”

“I had a torn labrum. 10 weeks before the fight, I f*cking snapped my labrum. It is what it is. … It was unfortunate,” O’Malley said. “No, (I didn’t consider pulling out). UFC Noche, f*cking Merab sucks. There was no reason to pull out.

“No, (I don’t regret not pulling out). Because I’m going to whoop Merab’s ass, and it’s going to make it that much sweeter when I beat him the second time,” O’Malley continued. “Overall, I had a good camp. Way better camp than the Aljo camp. The rib injury was a lot harder to train with than the torn labrum. The labrum, it’s just pain. … I was able to do a lot more.”

O’Malley has little doubt that a second dance with Dvalishvili lies in his future.

And with some uncertainty surrounding the Georgian’s expected title defense against Umar Nurmagomedov coming to fruition before the Dagestani takes a break for Ramadan, “Sugar” is hoping for a faster-than-predicted recovery in order to be a available for a possible rematch with the champ in March or April 2025.
