Khamzat Chimaev not only wants to stay active — he is now targeting the bigger names.

Chimaev is enjoying a meteoric rise with the UFC following two dominant wins in the space of 10 days with wins over John Phillips and most recently, Rhys McKee last night at UFC Fight Island 3.

The 26-year-old is not stopping there, as it was later revealed that he wanted to compete again at UFC 252 which takes place August 15 with Dana White even ready to make it happen.

Chimaev Targeting Bigger Names

If that is the case, the question would then turn to whom he should face next.

Given that he only made his UFC debut earlier this month, it would make sense to gradually build him up in the welterweight division.

But given how dominant he has been so far as well, many wouldn’t complain if he faced a more established name. Chimaev is going a step further as he called out former title challenger Demian Maia to see who had the superior grappling.

“@demianmaia you a legend I respect you but sorry you’re next… let’s see who have better grappling…”

While a fight with Maia would be for competitive reasons, a fight with someone like Michael Chiesa would be to fast-track himself into the top 10 of the rankings as Chimaev sent a tweet out to him as well.

It is unlikely that Chiesa — currently ranked No. 8 — would accept at the moment, though he did respond to a fan claiming he would never accept the fight.

Geoff Neal Thinks Michael Chiesa Is Scared To Fight Him

Welterweight contender Geoff Neal believes Michael Chiesa is “scared sh*tless” by the idea of fighting him.

Speaking to MMA Fighting Neal revealed he is happy with the UFC who are actively trying to secure him an opponent – it just seems like no-one wants to fight him, he said.

“The UFC’s been doing a great job trying to find me a fight. They can only do so much. They can’t make somebody fight. You hear Dana White say all the time ‘I can’t make these guys fight.’ That’s really what it comes down to. They’ve been trying. I don’t know the exact details of what the other parties have been offered but I know sh*t’s been going around and they’ve been pretty much saying no.”

Neal was keen to say he doesn’t believe most welterweights are ducking him, just Chiesa who thinks is “scared sh*tless” by the idea of fighting him, he said.

“I don’t want to call any fighters scared. Well, I will call one fighter scared. I think Michael Chiesa is f*cking scared sh*tless to fight me.”

“I feel like that fight makes so much sense and he’s trying to make it seem like it doesn’t make sense,” Neal said. “That doesn’t make sense to me and it makes me think you’re scared. You only have three wins in the welterweight division. You fought two dudes who are pretty much f**king lightweights and one dude that’s old as hell.

“And then you think you deserve Colby Covington? No. Just because you’re ranked No. 7 or 8 or whatever the f**k you are, fight me. I’m 5-0, you’re 3-0, the fight makes sense. He’s trying to make it like the fight doesn’t make sense and I don’t know what to make of that.”

If it really is fear keeping Chiesa or any other fighter from stepping in againt him, Neal says they should probably think about calling it a day.

“If it is fear keeping people from fighting me, they need to retire from this sport,” Neal said. “This is the fight game. When it comes time to fight, yeah, I’m scared but I don’t give a f**k. That’s not going to stop me from fighting somebody. It’s the fight game.

“If that’s the reason they don’t want to fight me because they’re scared, they need to re-evaluate what the hell they’re doing.”

Michael Chiesa

Welterweight contender Michael Chiesa has taken to social media to explain why he won’t be fighting during lockdown.

Chiesa is on a roll since jumping up to welterweight winning three straight fights. Last time out he secured the biggest win of his career by beating former lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos earlier this year.

Now ranked #8 in the 170lb division Chiesa says he won’t be taking any fights during lockdown due to the respect he has for the contenders him, he explained via Instagram.

“When are you going to fight again?

“That’s a question many of us fighters are being asked regularly. On the heels of my biggest win to date, there is nothing I want more than to get back in the octagon and compete. Fighting in an empty arena feels almost advantageous to me after the time I spent on TUF. Competing in that type of environment is not what I’m worried about. It’s the preparation that’s holding me back. Gyms are closed, training partners are scarce, and coaches/teammates are doing what’s best to protect the heath of their family. All of which are things I empathize with 110%. On top of that, there’s other problems behind the scenes that are better left unsaid. I know many fighters are experiencing the same challenges in trying to put together a camp right now.

“There’s some people that have enough resources to make it happen right now but unfortunately, I’m not one of those people. Ultimately I have two choices. One is keep doing what I can to stay fit and wait for restrictions to lift. The other is to make some choices and moves to get me in a position where I can be confident I can prepare for a fight. My stance on who I fight next will remain the same, it has to be someone ranked ahead of me. Out of respect for that short list of guys and the wishes of my family, I’m not showing up unless I can be at my absolute best.

“All I can say is, I hope to get back in there sooner than later and I am proactively searching for solutions on my own. I hope everyone out there is staying safe, and staying healthy. God bless.”

Is Michael Chiesa making the right move by refusing to fight during lockdown?
