Earlier today (Sat. September 14, 2019) on the main card of UFC Vancouver, a welterweight bout took place between Tristan Connelly and Michel Pereira.

Pereira was coming off an impressive and flashy UFC debut where he knocked out Danny Roberts in the first round earlier this year. He was a heavy betting favorite leading up to this bout. As for Connelly, this was his UFC debut but he was on a four-fight winning streak.

If you saw Pereira’s UFC debut, the first round was something you expected. But if not, you may have been bewildered by the number of backflips and crazy antics of Pereira. However, that turned out to be his downfall as while he entertained the fans, he also gassed out in the process.

Connelly would slowly take over the fight by taking Pereira down and applying another of submission attempts. In the end, he won a unanimous decision after the judges scored it 29-28, 29-27 and 29-27.

Brazilian mixed martial artist Michel Pereira wasn’t joking when he said he was a human highlight reel in real life.

The man known as “Demolidor” made one of the more memorable UFC debuts in Rochester over the weekend as he absolutely wrecked the United Kingdom’s Danny Roberts.

Pereira started out the contest with a few flashy, high-risk attacks. Then, at 1:47 of the very first round Pereira timed a flying knee that stunned Roberts, and he followed it up with a right hand (via ESPN MMA Twitter):

“I’ve always dreamed about this moment. I’ve fought a lot for this moment,” Pereira said. “Today, it became reality. My biggest dream has always been to fight in the UFC. I was very emotional and happy to be in there. I’ve dreamed about this every day.”

At only 25 years old Pereira is a welcome addition to the welterweight division. The win this weekend makes it three straight for the Brazilian and seven of the last eight overall.

Still, the “Demolidor” insists that fans haven’t seen anything yet.

“I’ve had better fights than this. I fought very little in there. I couldn’t even show half of my skills. I still have a lot of fantastic moves to show the UFC fans,” he said.

“I’d like to fight with the best. I don’t choose opponents. I want to be the new showman in the UFC. This is who I am.”

Moonsaulting Michel Pereira realizes a dream as he inks a multi-fight contract to fight in the UFC’s welterweight division.

The news was first reported by MMA Fighting and later confirmed by MMAJunkie.

Pereira, 25, is by no means a novice in MMA. He has more than 30 professional fights to his credit. His most recent second-round knockout of Dae Sung Kim at Road FC 52 in February went viral. Watch below.

In the clip above Pereira attempts a number of unorthodox flying attacks. At one point he even lands an illegal head stomp that prompted the referee to stop the fight momentarily. Regardless, Pereira won the fight in highlight reel fashion and later vowed to bring the same level of theatrics to the UFC.

“I have this mentality that, nowadays, the UFC is getting a little boring,” Pereira said. “Bellator, too. Athletes today are very concerned about winning. They think only about the victory. Not me, I think differently. I think about the show. People pay expensive tickets to see something they enjoy watching. Like back in the day, when there was Anderson Silva. Vitor Belfort, Jon Jones, they put on shows. Now, fighters are losing that. They’re focused only on winning, they don’t care what you think about their fights – if it will be good if it will be bad.

“I think that I have to have a good performance, and the win will come as consequence. … My goal is to become the UFC’s showman. It’s one of my goals, to carry that status: ‘Who’s the showman of the UFC? It’s Michel.’ I want to put on a show for the audience and try to bring this back among the athletes, as well.”
