Stephen Thompson hopes to be back paid for UFC 296 fight against Shavkat Rakhmonov

Stephen Thompson discusses upcoming bout with Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 296 on December 16.

Just under two months ago, the MMA world was supposed to be treated to a bout between two flashy strikers, Stephen Thompson and Michel Pereira. Unfortunately, Pereira missed weight and Thompson who was already fighting down elected not to take the fight and he was well within his rights to do so.

Thompson had made weight, however, but it came out afterwards that the UFC had not paid him, which caused a stir. ‘Wonderboy’ will now face off with Rakhmonov later this year and while he was not paid after the cancellation, said that UFC will take care of him for this one

“I expected really not to get paid [for UFC 291], but, obviously, my manager and everybody was like, ‘Hey, you showed up. You should be getting something.” So, I’m like, yeah. So, the managers went and chased that. Here I am now. I haven’t seen any money yet…I think the deal is when I fight Shavkat, they’re going to add on what they owed me for the last fight,” Thompson said. (H/T Middle Easy)

Stephen Thompson talks Shavkat Rakhmonov fight

The undefeated Rakhmonov has gained some serious hype after his almost flawless run in the promotion. ‘Nomad’ stands at 17-0 and has never seen the final bell, his all-round game resents a serious threat to seemingly anyone in the division.

However, Thompson answered the call, accepted the offer and fully expects to go out there and win come fight night.

“Nobody wants to fight this guy. So, here I am,” Thompson said. “I’m like, you know, do I fight somebody ranked below me? Do I fight somebody ranked above me? Probably one of the toughest guys in the division who nobody wants to fight. I’ll fight Shavkat. Let’s do it.

“I believe I go out and beat this guy.”

Stephen Thompson was understandably upset when his UFC 291 opponent, Michel Pereira, weighed in three pounds overweight for their main card clash on Saturday night.

‘Wonderboy’ stepped on the scale and hit the mark, just as he has always done throughout his mixed martial arts career. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for his opponent who tipped the scales at 174 pounds, three over the welterweight non-title fight limit of 171. During the ceremonials weigh-ins on Friday afternoon, Megan Olivi revealed to the live crowd that the bout had been officially scrapped.

Thompson took to social media shortly after, offering his reaction and an explanation for why he refused to move ahead with the fight.

“Unfortunately my fight with Michel Pereira will no longer be going forward,” Thompson wrote. “First off, I’m sorry to all the fans who were looking forward to my fight. I’m gutted for my coaches, my family and all the people who helped me throughout camp to be ready and prepared to go to battle.

I made weight this morning as I have done every fight during my 11+ year UFC career. My opponent did not. This isn’t the first time I’ve had an opponent miss weight and given how that played out previously, myself and my team felt that it’s ultimately not smart for us to move forward with this fight. At my age and given what I’ve accomplished in this sport, I’m not here to be a gatekeeper, I’m here to fight for and win a UFC Welterweight Title.

When I step into the Octagon, no one is in there but me and my opponent. This isn’t a videogame and both of us are putting our health and our careers on the line. If I don’t finish my opponent, I risk losing a decision, even if it’s a split decision as what happened when I fought Darren Till and almost the same exact scenario played out back then.

‘Wonderboy’ Thompson Hopes His Decision Discourages Fighters From Missing Weight

Thompson also spoke out against fighters who are repeatedly coming in heavy on the scale with little repercussion.

Fighters who miss weight face far too few consequences and are often allowed to fight with a significant competitive advantage,” Thompson continued. “This appears to be happening more and more these days. Hopefully the decision to not move forward with the fight will discourage others from missing weight in the future. I also hope to encourage fighters that face this situation to follow suit and not allow this to happen to them.”

‘Wonderboy’ also noted that he has every intention of getting back into the Octagon as soon as possible.

“I’m healthy and I will look to get back in the Octagon ASAP BUT on a level playing field as I continue to pursue my quest of winning the UFC Welterweight title,” he continued.

Stephen Thompson has not been the most active fighter over the last several years, only competing once in 2018, 2020, and 2022. As it stands we will likely see ‘Wonderboy’ compete once before 2023 comes to a close. His last outing came in December when he scored a fourth-round TKO against Kevin Holland.

The highly anticipated welterweight clash between Stephen Thompson and Michel Pereira has been removed from the UFC 291 main card on Saturday night after Pereira came in three pounds over the welterweight limit.

‘Demolidor’ stepped on the scale Friday morning, weighing in at 174lbs, three over the limit of 171 for a non-title welterweight bout. The UFC released an official statement confirming the cancelation of the bout shortly after. “Due to Michel Pereira weighing in over the welterweight limit, the bout against Stephen Thompson has been canceled from tomorrow’s event.”

The promotion also made an announcement ahead of Friday’s ceremonial weigh-ins, which you can see below:

A Heavyweight Bout Will Take the Place of Thomspon vs. Pereira

As a result, the heavyweight clash between Derrick Lewis and Marcos Rogerio de Lima has been promoted to the main card.

This is the second time that Michel Pereira has failed to make weight, the first coming in September 2019 at UFC Vancouver. ‘Demolidor’ was one pound overweight and would go on to lose a unanimous decision against Tristan Connelly.

Saturday’s event would have been Stephen Thompson’s first appearance of 2023. ‘Wonderboy’ only competed once in 2022, scoring a fourth-round TKO against Kevin Holland, who is scheduled to be part of the festivities in Salt Lake City this weekend. Prior to that, Thompson suffered back-to-back losses against Gilbert Burns and Belal Muhammad.

It is unclear if Thompson vs. Pereira will be rescheduled for a future event.

Stephen Thompson Michel Pereira UFC 290

Snapping his losing run in the main event of UFC Fight Night Orlando back in December of last year, two-time welterweight title challenger, Stephen Thompson has sights set on a return to the Octagon in the coming months – welcoming a fight with dynamic Brazilian striker, Michel Pereira.

Thompson, the current #7 ranked welterweight contender, managed to turn in an impressive eventual finish of Riverside striker, Kevin Holland in the main event of UFC Orlando last year – landing a fourth round corner stoppage TKO victory, Thompson earned a Fight of the Night bonus for his efforts in the ‘Sunshine State’.

Prior to his victory over Holland, the SImponsville native had dropped consecutive unanimous decision losses to grappling standouts, Belal Muhammad, and one-time welterweight title challenger, Gilbert Burns.

Stephen Thompson eyes fight with Michel Pereira in UFC return

Recently seen pictured at the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas, Nevada – alongside former two-division champion, Conor McGregor – who is filming The Ultimate Fighter 31, Thompson revealed he is targeting a return to the Octagon, potentially at UFC 290 during International Fight Week.

“Man, I’m looking at like May, June – maybe International Fight Week,” Stephen Thompson told Submission Radio during a recent interview. “Right now, like you said, I’m ranked number seven, he’s ranked higher than me. He’s looking for the title, and the title’s always at the top of my to-do list. After those two losses I had against Gilbert Burns and Belal Muhammad, you know, I just didn’t want a grappler at that moment. And, that’s predominantly what he likes to go for, is submissions.”

“I’m actually looking towards Michel Pereira, which I think would be just an exciting fight,” Stephen Thompson explained. “You know, that’s kind of where my mind’s at right now. And after that, we’ll hopefully get somebody that’s ranked above me. After those two losses, I gotta earn my way back up to fight somebody that’s ranked above me, and I understand that. So, I thin somebody like Michel, put on another show, and we’ll look at somebody that’s ranked above me.”

In the midst of a five-fight winning streak, Pereira most recently landed a decision win over division staple, Santiago Ponzinibbio, following a run of successes over Andre Fialho, Niko Price, Khaos Williams, and Zelim Imadaev.

UFC welterweight Michel Pereira details sparring reigning heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou.

Michel Pereira is scheduled to face fellow top 15 170lber’, Sean Brady, in March of next year. For his upcoming training camp, the Brazilian will be training at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas. Many notable names either train at Xtreme Couture, such as Sean Strickland and Chris Curtis, but the gym is also home to the world’s baddest man, Francis Ngannou.

As part of training, Pereira revealed to Sherdog.com that he shared sparring rounds with ‘The Predator’, comparing Ngannou’s size to that of a fridge.

In one of the first sparrings I did there, the coach told everybody to pair up. Since I was just arriving and didn’t know anybody, everybody was already paired up,” Pereira said. “I looked on both sides and there was only one partner left: Francis Ngannou. Oh my God. It looked like I was grappling with a refrigerator. The guy threw me to one side and another like I was a toy. I got a stiff neck for one week.”

Michel Pereira vs. Sean Brady

Michel Pereira has the opportunity to break into the UFC’s top 15 should he get passed the grappling-heavy approach of Brady. ‘Demolidor’ would reveal that he desperately tried to get onto the upcoming UFC Rio card, but instead would settle for the No.11 ranked Brady, whom he admits he knows little about.

I thought that my hard time finding opponents was due to the fact that I was out of the rankings, but that was a huge mistake“, Pereira said. “[UFC matchmaker Sean] Shelby did everything he could to find me someone to face at UFC Rio, but nobody wanted to fight me. I was really mad until the UFC came with the name of Sean Brady, and it looks like we will fight on March 25.

“All I know is that he is a wrestler. I saw his fight with Belal [Muhammad], but I don’t know much about him,” (H/T Sherdog.com)

Pereria is currently riding a five-fight win streak, holding wins over names such as Khaos Williams, Andre Fialho and Santiago Ponzinibbio.
