UFC welterweight Mike Perry was not entirely impressed with Colby Covington’s performance this past weekend.

Covington comfortably outpointed Robbie Lawler to win a unanimous decision in the UFC Newark headliner. In the process, he attempted a UFC record 533 strikes during the 25-minute bout.

However, that only showed how much power he lacked according to Perry, who tweeted out his thoughts during the event:

Perry expanded when asked about his tweets:

“Whatever, I don’t think he punches with any power,” Perry told media recently. “He never explodes. If I hit someone 600 times, it might be the first death in the Octagon. It only takes 60 for me. So 10 percent of what Colby did, if I did 10 percent of that, I smash him.

Perry Working On Anti-Wrestling

In fairness, Covington did not land 533 strikes — that was only his attempted strike total. But even still, he was able to come away with the win and is now in line to face Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title.

Both fighters have used their wrestling to dominate their opponents and it’s something Perry is working on himself so that he can utilize his striking:

“Yeah, it’s a good fight,” he said of Usman vs. Covington. “It’s two wrestlers. I see the sport in a different light these days. That light is, I see it as wrestling first. You have to subdue what these guys want to do which is either get the takedown or shy away from you, run and then get into the clinch and try to get the takedown, get on top of you and stall time.

That’s what they want to do and I’ve been working many ways on how to shut that down and open up my own game of striking.

Perry takes on Vicente Luque in the co-main event of UFC Uruguay on Saturday.

What do you make of Perry’s comments?

Mickey Gall is more than open to facing Mike Perry following the latter’s callout of him.

Gall returned to the win column with a decision victory over Salim Touahri on the prelims of UFC Newark last night. Afterwards, he reiterated his desire to have a rematch with Diego Sanchez by calling him out.

The pair fought earlier this year at UFC 235 with Sanchez winning via TKO in the second round. However, Gall was compromised heading into the fight, claiming he had suffered from kidney failure which affected his performance. That is why Gall called the first fight “B.S.” as he wanted to run things back.

Perry caught wind of his comments and issued a challenge soon after:

“Making excuses about getting dominated by @DiegoSanchezUFC shows @mickeygall still green,” he tweeted. “Even if you were sick it’s up to you to get in the octagon ready and prepared. Keep workin , Maybe you’ll catch these hands instead of the flu one day.”

When Gall was made aware of Perry’s comments, the New Jersey native responded accordingly:

“Green? Green meaning like you’re a beginner? F*ck Mike Perry,” Gall said at the post-fight scrum (via BJ Penn). “Yeah, f*ck yeah [I would fight Perry]. Hell yeah. If he gets through my boy Vicente Luque, then me and Perry could absolutely do it.

As Gall mentioned, Perry is set to face Vicente Luque in the UFC Uruguay co-main event next week. Should he win, however, it’s hard to see why Perry would face Gall, especially as he would likely enter the top 15 of the rankings.

Regardless, are you interested in seeing Perry vs. Gall?

Mike Perry’s Octagon return is set. MMA Fighting has confirmed an initial report from MMA Uncensored, revealing that Perry will be taking on Vicente Luque in the co-headliner of UFC Uruguay on August 10.

Perry has dropped three of his last five fights. In his latest outing, Perry defeated Alex Oliveira via unanimous decision at UFC Florida in April. “Platinum” is looking to put together his first win streak under the UFC banner since 2017.

As for Luque, he is riding high at the moment on a five-fight win streak. Each of those victories has come by way of finish. Both Luque and Perry are proven finishers, so this has the potential to steal the show come fight night in Montevideo.

Currently, the event is headlined by a flyweight title bout between defending champion Valentina Shevchenko and Liz Carmouche. We’ll keep you updated as more fights are announced for the card.

Mike Perry recently got back on the winning track, and is already pitching to avenge a loss to one of his former high-profile opponents.

The top contender is looking to run a fight back with Donald Cerrone under the UFC banner. In their first fight, which served as the co-main event of UFC Denver at the Pepsi Center last November, Cerrone submitted Perry via armbar at 4:46 of the first round.

At the time of the finish, Cerrone was on the bottom and transitioned to an armbar, going belly down. Perry had no choice but to tap as a result. There was some bad blood coming into this fight.

It all started when Cerrone verbally assaulted the JacksonWink gym, including calling them a “puppy mill” when speaking with Joe Rogan on his podcast. Perry has been training with JacksonWink for the past several months.

Mike Perry Pitches

While doing a recent interview on MMA Junkie Radio, Perry made it known that he thinks he can beat Cerrone should a rematch get booked:

“I’m not trying to be a sore loser over here, and I’m not gonna beg for a rematch. But I think I’m a capable athlete. And I think he got one over on me, where, in the right mindset that I feel these days, I can beat that guy,” Perry said (H/T to MMANews).

“And I think I (have) earned that ability or responsibility to get that opportunity to go in the cage and Octagon and fight him again. And he would have to see a different Mike Perry.”

Before this fight, Perry scored the first decision win of his career when he beat Paul Felder at UFC 226. That win also snapped back-to-back decision losses to Max Griffin and Santiago Ponzinibbio. In his latest fight, he beat Alex Oliveira by unanimous decision in April at UFC on ESPN+ 8.
