Kendly St. Louis kicked off the main card of Cage Fury FC 109 with a first-round submission in his catch weight fight against Feraris Golden.

After both men exchanged on the feet early, St. Louis landed a takedown just over a minute into the fight. The 31-year-old proceeded to maintain top control for the majority of the round until Golden made an effort to get to his feet with about 30 seconds remaining.

St. Louis grabbed ahold of his opponent’s neck the moment he got to his knees and locked the choke in as both men stood up. He continued cranking it and even lifted Golden off his feet before he appeared to go unconscious and referee Keith Peterson stepped in to stop the fight.

St. Louis improved his pro record to 5-4 and also picked up his second-straight submission victory. Immediately following St. Louis’ win, welterweight Tommy Majeski finished David Meshkhoradze with another first-round guillotine choke.

Sergio Cossio delivered one of the coldest knockouts you will ever see in the main event of Lux Fight League 22.

Facing Edgar Delgado in a five-round fight for the LFL lightweight belt, “Drako” made sure that only one round was needed to crown a champion.

The Mexican fighter dropped Delgado with a right hand late in the first round and followed up with hammer fists on the ground. With only a few seconds remaining, Cossio stood up and appeared content to let the round end. He would then create a new phrase to the MMA lexicon: “A Walk-back KO.”

“Drako” turned and landed another huge right hand as Cossio got to his feet, sending the Costa Rican to the canvas and the Mexico City crowd into a frenzy just as the bell sounded for what would have been the end of the round.

In addition to picking up his sixth straight victory, Cossio also reclaimed the LFL lightweight title that he originally won in 2020. The 31-year-old is 23-8-1 overall in his career, and he’s finished five of six opponents on this current winning streak.

What’s your reaction to this last-second knockout from Sergio Cossio at Lux Fight League 22?

Vitaliy Boev managed to avoid the judge’s scorecards by the slimmest of margins with a rear-naked choke finish just moments before the final bell at MMA Series 51.

Matched up with the debuting Maxim Kostrov, Boev was able to lock up a body triangle and choke his Russian compatriot unconscious in the waning seconds of the fight.

The referee was keeping a close eye on the action to break the fighters up once the final bell sounded but ended up stepping in as he saw Kostrov go limp from Boev’s choke.

The finish was officially listed as being at 4:58 of the third and final round.

According to the fight stats, Boev had out struck Kostrov by about a 2-1 margin and landed three takedowns at the time of the stoppage. While the Russian featherweight likely would have walked away with the decision had the fight gone the distance, earning a finish like this is certainly a good way for a young fighter to attract attention.

This was the third victory of the 26-year-old Boev’s MMA career. He was stopped by strikes in the third round of his last fight against Mukambet Kadyrali Uulu but is 3-1 overall as a pro. All three of Boev’s career wins have come via submission.

What’s your reaction to Vitaly Boev’s last-second submission?

Aleksandar Terzi? put his opponent to sleep with an arm-triangle choke to earn pick up a win in the co-main event of ARMMADA 1.

Working from top position against fellow Serbian Miladin Kolarski, Terzi? took advantage of his opponent’s attempt to turn away and wrapped up an arm-triangle choke from half guard.

Arm-triangle chokes are typically finished from side control, but the Serbian lightweight didn’t have the necessary room to step over Kolarski’s guard due to their proximity to the cage.

The position certainly didn’t seem to dissuade Terzi?, and the 27-year old showed off his strength by choking Kolariski unconscious despite being in his opponent’s half guard.

Terzi? rebounded from his second career loss with this win and improved his overall pro record to 8-2. The 27-year old lightweight has won by stoppage in six of his eight career wins, and this was his third victory via arm-triangle choke.

This was the first MMA event organized by the Serbian-based ARMMADA promotion. Only one of the event’s eight fights went the distance, and Terzi?’s win in the co-main event was the third submission of the night.

What’s your reaction to Aleskandar Terzi?’s submission victory?

Results of a new study have proposed a connection between frequent MMA sparring and changes to brain structure.

The study was presented at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in New Orleans on May 21. Lead researcher Aaron Esagoff and his colleagues examined information compiled from 92 active pro MMA fighters participating in their research.

Esagoff, a medical student at Johns Hopkins University, explained the reasoning behind focusing on sparring rather than actual fights.

“Fighters only fight a few times a year and only for a certain amount of time, under an hour, let’s say, but they spend hundreds of hours a year training. And so the health effects of training are going to be really important.”

The fighters involved were all actively competing during the period of study, but also were typically sparring about 10 rounds each week. The subjects were given MRI scans at two points during the study and the results of those scans were examined in relation to the amount of sparring each fighter was doing.

Effects On Brain Structure

The two primary findings of the study were the prevalence of white matter hyperintensities and the size of the caudate nucleus in the fighters that participated. White matter hyperintensities are indicators that a brain’s white matter has been damaged in some way, while the caudate nucleus is responsible for functions such as movement, learning and memory.

Max Holloway has publically encouraged up-and-coming fighters to avoid sparring to protect their health. (Associated Press)

Esagoff noted that being hit in the head during sparring might adversely affect the brain’s white matter and cause damage, but regular exposure to a fight situation could protect other parts of the brain (such as the caudate nucleus) during actual competition.

“It could be that the people that are sparring more are getting better at avoiding the big impacts and the big injuries that you can get during a fight that would lead to your caudate getting much smaller,” Esagoff said.

Esagoff and his colleagues concluded their findings by noting that their study was only a small sample size, and a longer-term study would be necessary to establish more conclusive results.

Opinions have varied among members of the MMA community on the subject of sparring in recent years. Some fighters feel that regular sparring is a necessary aspect of their fight preparation, whereas former UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway has chosen to eliminate sparring from his training altogether.

What are your thoughts on this new study examining the effects of MMA sparring on brain structure??

An MMA fighter has been charged with second-degree murder for stabbing a man to death after alleging that he and his spouse were being held hostage at their home in Canada.

Late Monday night, five individuals allegedly forced entry into a residence in Laval, Quebec. Heavyweight MMA fighter Eduardo “Icho” Larenas and his spouse had been renting the house since February and were at home when the group of men arrived.

According to the original report from TVA Nouvelles, the individuals arrived at the house posing as delivery men before taking Larenas and his spouse hostage. The group supposedly intended to steal a “large inheritance” that the MMA fighter had recently received.

Roughly six hours after the situation began, Larenas allegedly took a knife from one of the intruders and proceeded to stab him to death. Larenas and his spouse then managed to escape the remaining members of the group and leave the house.

Charges Filed After Investigation

Laval police arrived at the scene following a call they received around 2 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Due to the nature of the incident, Quebec Provincial Police were called in to assist with the investigation. A perimeter was set up around the residence in order for investigators to gain a clear picture of what had transpired.

In a meeting on Tuesday afternoon, investigators informed the couple there was a chance that criminal charges could be issued for the fatal stabbing.

Wednesday, authorities concluded that Larenas did not act in self-defense, and he was charged with second-degree murder. His partner, Gladys Rosana Lopez, has been charged with being an accessory after the fact.

A native of Argentina, “El Dogo” has lived and trained in Canada for the majority of his MMA career. The heavyweight fighter mainly competed for the Canadian-based TKO promotion, but also had one UFC appearance at UFC 58 where he lost to Tom Murphy via strikes in the third round.

Larenas last fought in 2018 and has an overall record of 6-6 in his career. You can watch one of Larenas’ pro bouts below.
