‘The Baltic Gladiator’ is no longer on the UFC roster.

On Thursday, it was reported that Modestas Bukauskas was released from the UFC. A source close to the situation subsequently confirmed the release to Lowkickmma.

The 27-year old Lithuanian fighter would comment on the situation by responding to the Twitter account UFC Roster Watch, which reports the release of every UFC athlete.

“It is what it is, but I’m so grateful for all the love and support; I was given a great opportunity but didn’t make the most of it ……… trust me though, next time I will,” Bukauskas wrote.

The somewhat surprising release comes a month and a few weeks after suffering a nasty knee injury against Khalil Rountree at UFC Fight Night: Brunson vs. Till. In the second round, Roundtree landed an oblique kick on Bukauskas that ended the fight via TKO.

In an interview with MyMMANews.com, he said he had successful knee surgery and added, “Everything went to plan, and I’m on the full road to recovery. I knew it was gonna be a quite painful operation because it’s the most I’ve had done, but hey, I’ll be back firing on all cylinders whenever I come back.”

Bukauskas went 1-3 in the UFC with two TKO losses. ‘The Baltic Gladiator’ was victorious in his UFC debut when he finished Andreas Michailidis via TKO on Fight Island. The former Cage Warriors Light Heavyweight champion was then matched up with UFC contender Jimmy Crute but would get knocked out in two minutes.

In Bukauskas’ third UFC fight, he lost a very controversial split decision to Michal Oleksiejczuk at UFC 260, in which all but one media member scored for Bukauskas.

The 27-year old will have a plethora of options when he is healthy and ready to fight again. He told LowkickMMA that he would eventually be back with the UFC.

What do you think of the UFC’s decision to cut Modestas Bukauskas?

Marc Goddard Believes Oblique Kicks Aren’t A Problematic Tactic

Marc Goddard is adamant that oblique kicks should continue to be a legal strike in MMA.

The veteran MMA referee took to Twitter to give his stance on the oblique kicks future in the MMA.

“I understand the aesthetic & why people have a hard time with it – but this is MMA & it’s all dangerous! Heel hooks, knee bars, reaping etc all directly attack the knee. It’s never nice to see a fight end with injury but we need to get over what we are doing here!”

“It absolutely is an aesthetic! Of course the injury result from it can be catastrophic – but so is brain health, eyesight etc and these are ALL at risk,” Goddard added. “The statistics in which we see this technique employed are very low, even lower when looking at which ones end fights!”

Goddard believes that it is only the look of oblique kicks that make them so bad. Goddard has a point and it is relevant to the 12-6 elbows as well. Those elbows are illegal mostly because of how devastating and barbaric they look. Goddard proclaims that, like any move inside the octagon there is a counter for the oblique kick. Will the oblique kicks be a banned strike now because of how bad they look when being used? The most notorious fighter known for using them oblique kicks being Jon ‘Bones’ Jones.

The oblique kick has come under scrutiny after Khalil Rountree Jr.’s use of it in his win over Modestas Bukauskas at UFC Fight Night this past Saturday.

While many MMA fans and even fighters like Kelvin Gastelum believe they should be an illegal strike and no longer be able to use inside the octagon. Brodeskas took to social media to congratulate Rountree on his win, even still people are complaining about the strike that beat him.

The oblique kick like any other move inside the MMA is intended to harm the opponent and take him out of the fight. If the UFC bans the oblique kick, where does it stop?

Do you agree with Marc Goddard? Should the oblique kick remain legal?

Modestas Bukauskas has come to the defense of Khalil Rountree Jr.

Rountree returned to the win column with an impressive striking display against Bukauskas that resulted in a second-round TKO win at UFC Vegas 36 last night.

The final blow was a vicious oblique kick from Rountree that buckled Bukauskas’ knee and ended the contest right away. Bukuaskas reportedly tore his MCL, ACL and PCL which only means he’ll be spending a long time on the sidelines.

Many observers as well as UFC fighters called for the kick to be banned soon after.

Of course, that’s not a knock on Rountree who was simply executing a move that is legal as per the ruleset. However, the oblique kick is certainly detracting from his impressive performance and victory.

To that, Bukauskas responded:

“Getting MRI when I get home…probably ligament damage…And yo please give my opponent some slack, that kick was all good, it was my job to defend and I didn’t. Let the man enjoy his victory”

Certainly a classy response from Bukauskas who hopefully can return to action as soon as possible.
