The man in charge of the Assembly floor in New York, Democrat Speaker Sheldon Silver yesterday put the big kabosh on the hopes of MMA supporters who were optimistic that the sport will be made legal in the Empire State this year.
Silver intimated to the New York Daily News that the bill may not even be brought to the Assembly floor for a vote before the current legislative session ends on June 20 because the support isn’t there, which is curious considering votes in the other levels of government have all swung considerably in favor of approving legalization.

“There does not appear to be widespread support in the Assembly for this legislation,” Silver said, ignoring the several outspoken Assmbly members who have voiced their support of the bill introduced by Democrat Assemblyman Steve Englebright.
Bill A04146A breezed through Senate voting a few weeks ago, the Assembly Tourism Committee voting this week and is expected to pass without issue through Assembly Codes Committee voting next week, so why not finally put it to an Assembly vote so we can see things done in a democratic manner (you know, since the Assembly is made up of a 94-58 Democratic majority) once and for all.
Unfortunately for MMA fans in the Empire state, the bill will likely not be pushed through in time for a vote before the current session ends in seven days, meaning it will be back to the drawing board next session.
(“Mr. Reilly, how long will it take for you to produce these documents? It’s been five days already.”)

Before it can be voted on by the Assembly, A04146A it will have to Codes Committee so liability and legal issues can be addressed before being passed onto the Ways and Means Committee, who will look at the dollars and cents of sanctioning the sport and if passed, only then will it be greenlit for the the Rules Committee to decide if the bill should see the light of day in the Assembly voting chamber.
If vocal MMA cock-blocker Bob Reilly gets his way, the bill will once again stall in the Assembly and be sent back to Senate for consideration in the fall. Similar bills have suffered the same fate as the one Reilly hopes will quash A04146A — a lack of time and the precedence of more pressing matters before Assembly members leave for their summer break.
Although most of those MMA supporters who are more versed on the inner workings of State government than we are are all but convinced that the bill will not make it to a final vote, according to The Fight Lawyer, Justin Klein, there is an off chance that it could take a shortcut to the Assembly floor.
“Worth noting that there are a significant number of assembly members pushing the Assembly Speaker to let the bill go straight to the floor for an up or down vote after passage out of the Tourism Committee,” Klein wrote in a blog post today. “Time will tell.”

(At least we can take comfort in the fact that Vader will eventually throw him overboard off the Death Star.)
It looks like MMA legalization in New York is still going to require a fight to make it a reality. Asshole Democrat Bob Reilly retained his New York State Assembly seat last night by defeating Republican opponent Jennifer Whalen 53.56% to 46.39%.
As you can hear in the interview we conducted with the vehement MMA opposer yesterday, he hasn’t got a fucking clue about MMA or even reality for that matter, so getting him to soften his stance on sanctioning will likely be an uphill battle.
Somebody needs to get ahold of some photos of Bob screwing a goat so we can expedite his resignation.
