Georges St. Pierre has shown once again why he’s the best mixed martial artist in the world: He doesn’t just keep winning, but he keeps getting better every time.

St. Pierre dominated Josh Koscheck for 25 minutes Saturday night at UFC 124, retaining the UFC welterweight championship with a unanimous decision victory that all three judges scored in St. Pierre’s favor, 50-45. St. Pierre has been working with the renowned boxing trainer Freddie Roach, and it clearly paid off, as St. Pierre used his boxing to a greater extent than ever before in his career.

“Josh Koscheck likes to throw his punch circular, and me, I’m a straight puncher,” St. Pierre said afterward. “So the issue was to keep him on the outside.”

Georges St-Pierre and Josh Koscheck earned the Fight of the Night at Saturday’s UFC 124 in Montreal, UFC president Dana White announced at the post-fight press conference.

For the first time ever, White allowed the fans to choose the winner of the Fight of the Night award and the hometown crowd selected the main event featuring champion St-Pierre.

Though White kept his word and allowed the fan’s choice to earn Fight of the Night, he would have picked a fight off the preliminary card (most likely Sean Pierson vs. Matthew Riddle) and said he won’t be letting fans decide again.

“[The fans] blew their chance, it’s over,” White said with a laugh.

Georges St. Pierre celebrates his win at UFC 124.MONTREAL — It was a fight that was personal from the beginning, the stakes rising and the rivalry growing in intensity with the six weeks Georges St. Pierre and Josh Koscheck spent together taping The Ultimate Fighter reality show in Las Vegas. By the time it rolled around, the usually underspoken St. Pierre was uncharacteristically promising a whipping for his longtime antagonist.

True to his word, St. Pierre bullied the bully at UFC 124, dismantling Koscheck in a five-round unanimous decision before a North American MMA record attendance of 23,152 at the Bell Centre.

Eschewing the takedown and control game that his critics decry as overly safe, St. Pierre easily outstruck Koscheck in a largely standup fight, much to the delight of the capacity crowd that exploded at every punch, elbow and kick.

Still, GSP felt the performance fell short of his perfectionist’s tastes, as he failed to finish Koscheck as he predicted.
