Gordon Ryan 2022 Tezos WNO

One of the greatest Jiu Jitsu practitioners on the planet, Gordan Ryan defended his throne at the 2022 Tezos WNO against Felipe Pena. A man who also carries a well-respected arsenal of world-class Jiu Jitsu.

As a three-time ADCC world champion, two-time IBJJF No-gi world champion, and a four-time Eddie Bravo Invitational champion, it is clear that Ryan is on a level of his own. His opponent is no slouch either, as Pena is an ADCC world champion in his own right.

In fact, Pena had actually defeated Ryan twice before their match at the 2022 Tezos WNO. Trash talk had escalated, and it all built up to a grappling match that was six years in the making.

The match was hyped, as fans knew they were going to see both athletes forced to pull out all the stops, and they would not be disappointed. With a limitless amount of time, the two men were able to grapple without needing to worry about time restrictions and fully delved into their bag of tricks.

Gordon Ryan and Felipe Pena endure a grueling grappling match at the 2022 Tezos WNO

The bout started with some hand fighting, and neither man looked to gain the advantage. It was obvious they had all the time in the world, so both warmed up in a slow but steady manner.

Things escalated when Gordon Ryan dropped to a guard. Pena would follow, but in a moment of Jiu Jitsu trickery, Ryan would escape out the backdoor and pursue the back of his adversary. Eventually, they would land in a body lock pass, but Pena would recover to open guard.

As the minutes flew by, the match turned into a relative stalemate with good moments for each athlete at varying instances. The longer the match drew on, the more Gordon Ryan would shine.

A finish to a hard-fought war

With vicious slams and mat returns, Ryan began to wear down on Pena, who had exhausted seemingly everything in his arsenal. Around the forty-minute mark, things got especially rough.

With a final high-impact takedown, Gordon Ryan would slam Pena down and apply top pressure. In the exhaustion, it must have been enough for Pena to succeed, as he finally signaled to the referee that he was done after a hellacious 44 minutes and 41 seconds.

Is Gordon Ryan the greatest BJJ practitioner on the planet right now?

Roberto Soldic

Two-division KSW champion, Roberto Soldic has confirmed a move to the Chatri Sityodtong-led ONE Championship organization, as the Bosnian-born striker departs the European outfit following a five-year tenure with the promotion.

Boasting an impressive 20-3 professional record, Roberto Soldic headlined KSW 65 back in December of last year most recently, defeating promotional favorite, Mamed Khaliov to scoop the undisputed middleweight championship – adding to his welterweight spoils.

Roberto Soldic had been continually linked with a move to the UFC

In the time since, Soldic has been linked continually with a move to the UFC, after expressing his interest in fighting under the Dana White-led banner. And talks between the promotion and Soldic had taken place in London during a March event for the organization.

However, despite interest from the UFC, Soldic confirmed during an appearance on The MMA Hour this Monday evening with Ariel Helwani, that he had put pen to paper on a multi-fight deal with ONE Championship.

Soldic, 27, is currently riding an impressive seven-fight winning spree, including his December knockout win over Khalidov. And also holds a rematch knockout success against surging UFC middleweight contender, Dricus Du Plessis.

Competing under the Graham Boylan-led, Cage Warriors organizational banner on a sole occasion back in October 2017, Roberto Soldic defeated Lewis Long with a 40-second high kick knockout win in Wales.

Speaking on his move to the Chatri Sityodtong-led outfit, Soldic confirmed that he had received some assurances that he would be allowed to compete in professional boxing, kickboxing, and Muay Thai – as well as professional mixed martial arts, as he notes his aspirations to land championships and titles in as many combat sports as possible.

Landing 20 professional victories, Soldic, a decorated and renowned kickboxer, has landed a whopping 17 career knockout triumphs. Soldic successfully defended his welterweight title on two occasions with KSW before securing the middleweight crown with his December KO over Khalidov.

Dutch fighter Reinier de Ridder is set on getting a third belt before competing with Israel Adesanya.

Two-division ONE Championship king Ridder scored a major upset against former two-title holder Aung La Nsang to secure the middleweight strap in October 2020 at ONE: Inside the Matrix.

Considering how big of a shock the result was, some alleged the win to be a fluke. De Ridder would prove the doubters wrong when he stepped in on short notice to take on La Nsang at light heavyweight and defeated “The Burmese Python” one more time at ONE on TNT 4 in April 2021.

Reinier de Ridder eyeing a move up to heavyweight to get the third belt

De Ridder is set to defend his middleweight strap against Vitaly Bigdash at ONE 159 this Friday. Ahead of his upcoming bout, “The Dutch Knight” talked to talkSPORT about his plans next.

“I’ve been calling for it for a couple of fights now, but heavyweight is there. I’ve beat the welterweight champ. I’ve beat the middleweight champ. I’ve beat the light-heavyweight champ, so I think it’s time,” de Ridder said.

Although he makes a solid case for going up to heavyweight and challenging the reigning champion Arjan Bhullar, he’s not sure if he’ll get the chance as Bhullar eyes a move down to compete against him.

“Is ONE [Championship] interested? I’m not really sure right now. Arjan [Bhullar] is not because he’s been talking about coming back down the light-heavyweight, which is also fine to me. I just wanna know that I can beat everybody and I just wanna show everybody,” De Ridder said. (Transcribed by Jordan Ellis/talkSPORT).

De Ridder wants to fight Israel Adesanya

If De Ridder is able to prove his mettle in the Asian promotion up to his satisfaction, he will then target a move over to the UFC in hopes of a fight with Israel Adesanya. He talked about Adesanya’s lackluster performance in his last title defense against Jared Cannonier at UFC 276.

“I think he’s a bit too distracted, man. I think he’s too focused on everything around fighting and not fighting itself. It’s about the walkout. It’s about the social media stuff. It’s about the metrosexuality [laughs] – the painted fingernails,” de Ridder said.

“It’s all show now, fighting is not the primary thing. I think he should get back to his roots, put his phone away, put the laptop away and start training again.”

De Ridder believes he has what it takes to hand Adesanya his first defeat at 185 lb in the sport.

“I think he’s very, very vulnerable in the open space. His takedown defence against the fence is alright but in the open space it’s just not there,” de Ridder said.

“It’s not like, he does have power, but he doesn’t have one-shot knockout power, to be honest. You don’t need to be as cautious as most people are against him. You can eat a couple of shots before taking him down.

“I think it’s pretty possible. It’s something that might happen sooner rather than later.”

Demetrious Johnson has backed Henry Cejudo to win over Aljamain Sterling or Alexander Volkanovski.

Former two-division UFC champion Henry Cejudo re-entered the USADA testing pool in April to solidify his return to competition. Cejudo announced that he was hanging up the gloves after his win over Dominick Cruz in May 2020. While he does not have a confirmed opponent yet, he has been rallying for a shot at either of the two champions at bantamweight and featherweight.

Although Cejudo didn’t compete at featherweight, Demetrious Johnson believes he has what it takes to dethrone Alex Volkanovski or the lighter Sterling.

Demetrious Johnson backs Henry Cejudo for a title shot in a comeback fight

In an interview with MMA Fighting, ‘The Mighty Mouse’ shared his thoughts on Cejudo as a fighter and heaped praises on the only person to have won an Olympic Gold and a UFC championship.

“He’s intelligent, he’s an athlete – I mean, he’s done something I haven’t done,” Johnson said. “You know, he’s won the world championship at flyweight and bantamweight, and he’s defended the flyweight title and the bantamweight title, right?

“Typically guys when they do that, Conor [McGregor] has done it, but he never defended any of those belts. He’s won it, then [won] one after, and then he got lost, right? That’s one thing I think Henry Cejudo has that people should show respect to the man. I respect him.”

Johnson talked about how he sees a matchup between ‘Triple C’ and ‘Funk Master’ playing out.

“If he was to fight Aljamain Sterling, I think he poses a lot of problems to Aljamain Sterling because, one, his wrestling is legit, his hands are legit, and Henry Cejudo, he’s a gamer,” Johnson said. “Like, he’ll go out there and he’s gonna push the pace and try to win the fight. Obviously, right now Henry Cejudo’s got that dad bod, so he’s gonna have to shred all that baby weight, and I’m sure he can do it. It’s all about does the athlete want to do it, in my opinion.”

Johnson believes Alex Volkanovski will be a tougher matchup

‘The Great’ is currently on a 21-fight win streak and has gone unbeaten in the UFC in 11 fights against competition like Jose Aldo, Max Holloway, Chad Mendes, and Brian Ortega.

As for a potential showdown against the reigning king of 145 lbs, Johnson believes Cejudo would have a harder time.

“I think [fighting for the featherweight title] is gonna be a harder thing to do because Volkanovski is, I think, the bigger guy, and Volkanovski has been more active. And I think the weight discrepancy is going to be there for Volkanovski, right? Do I think Henry Cejudo has the talent and skillset and the mindset to beat Volkanovski? Absolutely, it’s a fight, but Volkanovski has been active, he’s been fighting killers. He’s fought Max Holloway two times.”

Johnson compared Volkanovski to Cejudo and said that they are identical in their approach to fighting.

“And Volkanovski is very good about sticking to the gameplan and executing the gameplan, right?” Johnson said. “That’s one of the things I’ve noticed about him. When he’s fought Chad Mendes, and he’s fought the guys in the past, you saw the grit, you saw the tough, you saw the rugby, you saw the athlete come out in it.

“But now, when you see him fight, when he fought Max Holloway both times and when he fought Brian Ortega and when he just fought ‘Korean Zombie,’ you saw an athlete also become a martial artist and also sticking to executing a perfect gameplan.

“So, that’s the biggest thing I think that Henry Cejudo is going to have to battle. He’s going to gave to battle pretty much an identical version of him, in my opinion.”

Alex Volkanovski is scheduled to fight Max Holloway for a third time on July 2 at UFC 276.

Off the back of his second round special rules submission win over striking sensation, Rodtang Jitmuangnon at ONE Championship X in March, former UFC flyweight champion and ONE Championship Grand Prix victor, Demetrious Johnson will land a rematch against current division titleholder, Adriano Moraes at an August 26. event.

Demetrious Johnson, who featured against Moraes in the main event of ONE on TNT 1 back in April of last year, unsuccessfully attempted to pry the flyweight crown from the Brazilian suffering the first loss of his tenure with the organization, courtesy of a second round knee knockout loss. The KO stoppage came as the first time Johnson had been finished in professional mixed martial arts.

Demetrious Johnson previously landed the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix victory

For Moraes, the Brasilia standout managed to further cement his dominance at flyweight following his knockout win over Johnson, submitting common-foe, Yuya Wakamatsu with a third round guillotine win at ONE X in March of this year. Moraes currently boasts a 20-3 professional record.

Ariel Helwani was first to report the news of Johnson’s title rematch against Moraes on his official Substack page, noting how the pairing is expected to be officially confirmed by the promotion at their upcoming ONE Championship 158 event. The August event will come as ONE Championship’s first on Amazon Prime Video.

Before his loss to Moraes, Demetrious Johnson, who holds the most consecutive successful title defenses in the history of the UFC with a whopping 11 straight title knockbacks, had enjoyed a run of three consecutive wins since his move to the Chatri Sityodtong-led banner.

Debuting with a guillotine win of his own against the aforenoted, Wakamatsu – Johnson would then land a pair of unanimous decision successes against both Tatsumitsu Wada, and then Danny Kingad – the most recent of which landed him the ONE Championship Flyweight Grand Prix spoils.

A three-time ONE Championship flyweight champion, Moraes holds 10 separate submission wins to go with a further four knockout wins. Amongst his winning résumé – the 33-year-old has defeated Kairat Akhmetov, common-foe, Danny Kingad, and avenged a split decision loss to Geje Eustaquio.

Tye Ruotolo Wants To Fight Garry Tonon In MMA After BJJ Win: “I Think My Hands Are Better Too”

Tye Ruotolo

BJJ prodigy Tye Ruotolo has his eyes set on competing in the sport of mixed martial arts next.

Making his submission grappling debut in ONE Championship, Tye Ruotolo managed to tap out the legendary Garry Tonon at ONE Championship 157. In just two minutes of the contest, Ruotolo displayed an exhibition of superior movement before locking in a D’Arce choke to announce his presence in the promotion.

Tye Ruotolo steals the show

During a post-fight interview, Ruotolo spoke to the press about his plans for the future and touched on the idea of competing in MMA.

“My goal in jiu-jitsu right now is to just keep being the best version of myself, and to get to the title in jiu-jitsu and to the title in MMA is what my brother and I want to do as well. So we’ve got a lot of goals right now,” Ruotolo said.

“I just finished that match, so I really don’t know who I want next in jiu-jitsu. Maybe an MMA debut. My brother and I are really scratching for that. I’m really down to fight anybody in the world. Big, small, I’m ready to go.” (h/t SCMP)

Hinting at returning to competition in MMA instead of BJJ, Tye Ruotolo expanded on the possibility.

Garry Tonon would be fun for the fans for sure. He’s 6-1 in MMA. He just came off a title fight, and I don’t know if Chatri [Sityodtong, ONE CEO] would let me debut [against] Garry Tonon. I had dinner with him the other night, I think he kind of seemed interested in the idea.

“That would be really cool. After my performance tonight I kind of deserve it. In jiu-jitsu I proved I’m better than him, in the most humble way possible, and I think that my hands are better than his too, just being realistic. So I’d love to fight him in MMA.”

Along with Tye, his twin brother Kade Ruotolo also made his debut in the promotion on the same night. Kade dominated his way against the Japanese veteran Shinya Aoki to grab a decision win.

If the twins’ BJJ abilities are any indication, they may be looking at a flourishing MMA career ahead. A lot depends on how ONE CEO Sityodtong plans to carry them in the organization and will likely give them a shot in MMA if an agreement is reached.

How do you think the Ruotolo brothers would fare in MMA?
